Dietary supplement use and its related factors among Chinese international and Korean college students in South Korea

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The consumption of dietary supplements has shown an increase among young people in their 20s. We aimed to compare the use of dietary supplements and related factors between Chinese international and Korean college students living in South Korea. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We conducted online surveys of 400 Chinese international students and 452 Korean college students from January to February 2021. We analyzed the factors related to the use of dietary supplements by these students using multi-group structural equation modeling and logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Approximately 65% of the Chinese international students and 93% of the Korean college students consumed dietary supplements at least once in the year preceding the survey. The common types of dietary supplements consumed by both groups of students were vitamin and mineral supplements, Lactobacillus products, and red ginseng products. Structural equation modeling showed that perception of the consumption of dietary supplements by family and friends positively influenced attitude toward dietary supplements. This effect was higher for Korean college students than for Chinese international students (P < 0.01). Attitude toward dietary supplements positively influenced their use, and this effect was higher for Chinese international students than for Korean college students (P < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that the use of dietary supplements by Chinese international students was significantly associated with age, self-reported health status, interest in health, perception of and attitude toward dietary supplements, and length of residence in South Korea. Among Korean college students, it was associated with exercise frequency and attitude toward dietary supplements. CONCLUSION: This study showed significant differences in the use of dietary supplements and related factors between Chinese international and Korean college students. Therefore, nutrition education programs on dietary supplements need to have differentiated content for each group. Such differences also suggest that the industry should consider the relevant characteristics of college students while developing and marketing dietary supplements.

컴패니언 로봇의 멀티 모달 대화 인터랙션에서의 감정 표현 디자인 연구 (Design of the emotion expression in multimodal conversation interaction of companion robot)

  • 본 연구는 실버세대를 위한 컴패니언 로봇의 인터랙션 경험 디자인을 위해 사용자 태스크- 로봇 기능 적합도 매핑에 기반한 로봇 유형 분석과 멀티모달 대화 인터랙션에서의 로봇 감정표현 연구를 수행하였다. 노인의 니즈 분석을 위해 노인과 자원 봉사자를 대상으로 FGI, 에스노그래피를 진행하였으며 로봇 지원 기능과 엑추에이터 매칭을 통해 로봇 기능 조합 유형에 대한 분석을 하였다. 도출된 4가지 유형의 로봇 중 표정 기반 대화형 로봇 유형으로 프로토타이핑을 하였으며 에크만의 얼굴 움직임 부호화 시스템(Facial Action Coding System: FACS)을 기반으로 6가지 기본 감정에 대한 표정을 시각화하였다. 사용자 실험에서는 로봇이 전달하는 정보의 정서코드에 맞게 로봇의 표정이 변화할 때와 로봇이 인터랙션 사이클을 자발적으로 시작할 때 사용자의 인지와 정서에 미치는 영향을 이야기 회상 검사(Story Recall Test: STR)와 표정 감정 분석 소프트웨어 Emotion API로 검증하였다. 실험 결과, 정보의 정서코드에 맞는 로봇의 표정 변화 그룹이 회상 검사에서 상대적으로 높은 기억 회상률을 보였다. 한편 피험자의 표정 분석에서는 로봇의 감정 표현과 자발적인 인터랙션 시작이 피험자들에게 정서적으로 긍정적 영향을 주고 선호되는 것을 확인하였다.

X-ray/gamma radiation shielding properties of Aluminium-Bariume-Zinc Oxide nanoparticles synthesized via low temperature solution combustion method

  • For the first time Aluminium-BariumeZinc oxide nanocomposite (ZABONC) was synthesized by solution combustion method where calcination was carried out at low temperatures (600℃) to study the electromagnetic (EM) (X/γ) radiation shielding properties. Further for characterization purpose standard techniques like PXRD, SEM, UV-VISIBLE, FTIR were used to find phase purity, functional groups, surface morphology, and to do structural analysis and energy band gap determination. The PXRD pattern shows (hkl) planes corresponding to spinel cubic phase of ZnAl2O4, cubic Ba(NO3)2, α and γ phase of Al2O3 which clearly confirms the formation of complex nano composite. From SEM histogram mean size of nano particles was calculated and is in the order of 17 nm. Wood and Tauc's relation direct energy band gap calculation gives energy gap of 2.9 eV. In addition, EM (X/γ) shielding properties were measured and compared with the theoretical ones using standard procedures (NaI (Tl) detector and multi channel analyzer MCA). For energy above 356 keV the measured shielding parameters agree well with the theory, while below this value slight deviation is observed, due to the influence of atomic/crystallite size of the ZABONC. Hence synthesized ZABONC can be used as a shielding material in EM (X/γ) radiation shielding.

Adventitial Fibroblast Abormality in Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms and Aortic Dissections

  • Background: Development of thoracic aortic aneurysms and aortic dissections (TAAD) is attributed to unbearable wall tension superimposed on defective aortic wall integrity and impaired aortic repair mechanisms. Central to this repair mechanisms are well-balanced and adequately functional cellular components of the aortic wall, including endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells (SMCs), inflammatory cells, and adventitial fibroblasts. Adventitial fibroblasts naturally produce aortic extracellular matrix (ECM), and, when aortic wall is injured, they can be transformed into SMCs, which in turn are involved in aortic remodeling. We postulated the hypothesis that adventitial fibroblasts in patients with TAAD may have defects in ECM production and SMC transformation. Materials and Methods: Adventitial fibroblasts were procured from the adventitial layer of fresh aortic tissues of patients with TAAD (Group I) and of multi-organ donors (Group II), and 4-passage cell culture was performed prior to the experiment. To assess ECM production, cells were treated with TNF-${\alpha}$ (50 pM) and the expression of MMP-2/MMP-3 was analyzed using western blot technique. To assess SMC transformation capacity, cells were treated with TGF-${\beta}1$ and expression of SM ${\alpha}$-actin, SM-MHC, Ki-67 and SM calponin was evaluated using western blot technique. Fibroblasts were then treated with TGF-${\beta}1$ (10 pM) for up to 10 days with TGF-${\beta}1$ supplementation every 2 days, and the proportion of transformed SMC in the cell line was measured using immunofluorescence assay for fibroblast surface antigen every 2 days. Results: MMP-3 expression was significantly lower in group I than in group II. TGF-${\beta}1$-stimulated adventitial fibroblasts in group I expressed less SM ${\alpha}$-actin, SM-MHC, and Ki-67 than in group II. SM-calponin expression was not different between the two groups. Presence of fibroblast was observed on immunofluorescence assay after more than 6 days of TGF-${\beta}1$ treatment in group I, while most fibroblasts were transformed to SMC within 4 days in group II. Conclusion: ECM production and SMC transformation are compromised in adventitial fibroblasts from patients with TAAD. This result suggests that functional restoration of adventitial fibroblasts could well be a novel approach for the prevention and treatment of TAAD.

기능성위장질환 환자들의 정신사회적 특성 및 삶의 질의 관계에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Psychosocial Characteristics and Quality of Life in Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders)

  • 연구목적 본 연구에서는 기능성위장질환 환자집단, 기능성 위장증상 양성 집단 및 정상대조집단에서 정신사회적 특성을 비교하고, 기능성위장질환 환자의 삶의 질과 연관된 요인들을 알아보고자 하였다. 방 법 일 대학병원 소화기 내과 전문의에 의해 기능성위장질환으로 진단받은 환자 65명을 기능성위장질환 환자집단으로 선정하였다. 167명의 일 도 지역 공무원을 대상으로 로마III 진단 기준에 따라 기능성 위장증상을 보이지 않는 79명을 정상대조집단, 기능성위장증상을 나타내는 88명은 기능성위장증상 양성 집단으로 선별하였다. 인구통계학적 요인을 조사하였으며 정신사회적 요인을 평가하기 위해 Korean-Beck Depression Inventory-II (K-BDI-II), Korean-Beck Anxiety Inventory (K-BAI), Korean version of Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (K-CTQ), Multi-dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), Korean Version of Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (K-CD-RISC), World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment Instrument Brief Form (WHOQOL-BREF)를 사용하였다. 일원배치 분산분석을 사용하여 집단들 간의 차이를 비교하고 기능성위장질환 환자군의 삶의 질과 정신사회적 요인들의 상관관계를 분석하기 위해 Pearson correlation test를 시행하였다. 모든 통계는 SPSS 21.0을 사용하였다. 결 과 인구통계학적 특성에서는 학력에서 집단간 차이가 유의했다(p<0.001). FGID 환자집단이 정상대조집단과 FGID-positive집단에 비해 우울(F=29.012, p<0.001) 및 불안(F=27.954, p<0.001)이 유의하게 높았다. 아동기 외상에서 정서학대(F=6.994, p<0.001)와 신체방임(F=5.573, p<0.001)은 FGID환자집단이 정상대조집단과 FGID-positive집단에 비해 유의하게 높았으나, 신체학대, 성 학대 및 정서방임은 세 집단간의 차이가 없었다. 사회적 지지 또한 FGID환자집단이 정상대조집단과 FGID-positive집단에 비해 유의하게 낮은 것으로 나타났다(F=27.664, p<0.001). 회복 탄력성(F=9.623, p<0.001)과 하위영역인 강인성(F=5.123, p<0.001), 인내력(F=8.402, p<0.001), 낙관성(F=15.039, p<0.001) 및 영성(F=5.129, p<0.001)에서도 FGID환자집단이 정상 대조집단과 FGID-positive 집단보다 유의하게 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 삶의 질 척도(F=35.991, p<0.001)와 그 하위영역인 전반적 안녕(F=30.463, p<0.001), 신체적 건강(F=45.247, p<0.001), 심리(F=22.852, p<0.001), 사회(F=20.070, p<0.001), 환경(F=17.851, p<0.001) 모두에서 FGID환자집단이 정상대조집단과 FGID-positive집단에 비해 유의하게 낮은 점수를 나타냈다. FGID 환자집단에서 삶의 질은 회복탄력성과 양의 상관관계를 보였으며(r=0.475, p<0.01), 우울(r=-0.641, p<0.01), 불안(r=-0.441, p<0.01) 및 아동기 외상(r=-0.278, p<0.05)과는 음의 상관관계를 나타냈다. 결 론 연구결과 기능성위장질환 환자집단은 기능성 위장증상 양성 집단 및 정상대조집단에 비해 우울, 불안과 아동기 트라우마가 유의하게 높았으며 사회적 지지 및 회복 탄력성이 낮았다. 따라서 추후 기능성 위장질환 환자의 치료에 있어 정신사회적 요인에 대한 적극적인 개입이 요구된다고 하겠다.

스펙트로그램을 이용한 내전형 연축성 발성 장애와 근긴장성 발성 장애의 감별 (Differentiation of Adductor-Type Spasmodic Dysphonia from Muscle Tension Dysphonia Using Spectrogram)

  • Background and Objectives : Adductor type spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) is neurogenic disorder and focal laryngeal dystonia, while muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is caused by functional voice disorder. Both ADSD and MTD may be associated with excessive supraglottic contraction and compensation, resulting in a strained voice quality with spastic voice breaks. The aim of this study was to determine the utility of spectrogram analysis in the differentiation of ADSD from MTD. Materials and Methods : From 2015 through 2017, 17 patients of ADSD and 20 of MTD, underwent acoustic recording and phonatory function studies, were enrolled. Jitter (frequency perturbation), Shimmer (amplitude perturbation) were obtained using MDVP (Multi-dimensional Voice Program) and GRBAS scale was used for perceptual evaluation. The two speech therapist evaluated a wide band (11,250 Hz) spectrogram by blind test using 4 scales (0-3 point) for four spectral findings, abrupt voice breaks, irregular wide spaced vertical striations, well defined formants and high frequency spectral noise. Results : Jitter, Shimmer and GRBAS were not found different between two groups with no significant correlation (p>0.05). Abrupt voice breaks and irregular wide spaced vertical striations of ADSD were significantly higher than those of MTD with strong correlation (p<0.01). High frequency spectral noise of MTD were higher than those of ADSD with strong correlation (p<0.01). Well defined formants were not found different between two groups. Conclusion : The wide band spectrograms provided visual perceptual information can differentiate ADSD from MTD. Spectrogram analysis is a useful diagnostic tool for differentiating ADSD from MTD where perceptual analysis and clinical evaluation alone are insufficient.

A research on the introducing the waterproof corrugated cardboard box for the efficient shipment of chinese cabbages and radishes: Focusing on Garak-dong wholesale market as the center

  • It is possible to use pallet for forwarding as chinese cabbages and radishes are general large-scale trading items at the agricultural wholesale market though, however, most of these are forwarded as it have packed in net bags or in P·E bags. Thus, it is still hard for palletizing. The type of packing the product in the net bag makes it difficult for palletizing. It is not a stable shape enough and easily collapsed for pallet loading. Because of this collapsibility, the corrugated cardboard box is being used to enhance forwarding efficiency, but the existing corrugated cardboard box could be crushed easily by moist what is from the agricultural product's property and it also could be squashed by the mass of the loaded box layers on itself. In contrary, the functional waterproof corrugated cardboard box is not collapsed through palletizing and it is efficient for product management with it's ventilation function in respond to pre-cooling effect. Furthermore, because it has various functional shapes as the open type, the partition type and so on, it is effective for maintaining freshness of the product and standardizing the distribution of agricultural product. It is well-known that it is possible to introduce this box to cargo-works of agricultural product. Consequently, the recognition of main distributors about the pallet distribution of the chinese cabbage and the radish was apprehended in this study for activating mechanization of loading and unloading. The survey was conducted to the main distributors such as the forwarder, the auction dealer and the commission merchant with Garak-dong wholesale market as the center. The appropriate packing materials and problems of the existing method for loading and unloading were derived through the survey. Especially, it was focused on analyzing the difference of recognition between the subject groups for the way of using waterproof cardboard corrugated box to deal with the difficult product for packing in normal corrugated box because of the box's absorption of moist from the agricultural product like a chinese cabbage and a radish. Total In the cases of the forwarders and the commission merchants, the net was highly responded as 45%, 74% from each groups for the best packing material for mechanization of distribution and the waterproof corrugated cardboard box was responded as 20%, 22% from each groups as much preferable than multi-stage wooden box. However, for the radish, the waterproof corrugated cardboard box was the best material as 56%, and the auction trader group supported it for 80%. So, the using the waterproof corrugated cardboard box for mechanization of distribution was negative for the chinese cabbage, but it was positive for the radish. The average was 2.42, the standard deviation was 1.24. The negative response(about 55%) was prevailing more than positive response(about 23%). It could be analyzed that even there was the positive recognition for using the waterproof corrugated cardboard box for the radish though the preference for low price of net bag in the chinese cabbage forwarding procedure. Still now, it seems that is a burden for using the waterproof corrugated cardboard box with high price. In the analysis on the recognition differences about using the waterproof corrugated cardboard box for the chinese cabbages and the radish between the forwarders and the commission merchants, generally the negative recognition was prevailing, but the forwarders(2.696) were more positive for using the waterproof corrugated cardboard box than the commission merchants(2.145).

기능성 소화불량 한의 변증 표준화를 위한 이중탕, 평위산 및 시호소간탕 투여 : 무작위 배정, 평가자 눈가림, 3군 비교, 평행 설계, 공개, 다기관 임상시험 프로토콜 (Administration of Yijung-tang, Pyeongwi-san, and Shihosogan-tang for Standardization of Korean Medicine Pattern Identification for Functional Dyspepsia: A Study Protocol of a Randomized, Assessor-blind, 3-Arm, Parallel, Open-label, Multicenter Clinical Trial)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness and safety of frequently used clinical herbal medicines (Yijung-tang [Lizhong-tang, LJT], Pyeongwi-san [Pingwei-san, PWS], and Shihosogan-tang [Chaihu Shugan-tang, SST]) in patients with functional dyspepsia (FD) when administered according to herbal medicine and Korean medicine pattern identification. The results of this study will be used to standardize the diagnostic instrument used in Korean medicine and to investigate biomarkers of Korean medicine pattern identification. Methods: This study will be a randomized, assessor-blind, 3-arm, parallel, open-label, multi-center clinical trial. A total of 300 FD participants will be recruited from 3 Korean medical hospitals and assigned to the LJT (n=100), PWS (n=100), and SST (n=100) groups according to FD pattern identification. The patients will take the medication for 8 weeks, 3 times a day, before or between meals. The primary outcome will be total dyspepsia symptom (TDS) and the secondary outcomes will be adequate relief (AR) for dyspepsia, overall treatment effect (OTE), visual analogue scale (VAS), functional dyspepsia-related quality of life (FD-QoL), gastrointestinal symptom score (GIS), and pattern identification questionnaires. For the exploratory outcomes, we will analyze blood and fecal metabolome profiles, microbiota from fecal and saliva samples, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), and results of Korean medicine diagnosis device measurements (heart rate variability, and tongue, pulse, and abdominal diagnosis). Conclusions: The results of this study will prove objectivity for Korean medicine pattern identifications, and the effectiveness and safety of herbal medicines for the population with FD.

기능화 다중벽 탄소나노튜브를 첨가한 글라스아이오노머 시멘트의 항균효과 및 기계적 성질 (Antibacterial and Mechanical Properties of Glass Ionomer Cements Containing Functionalized Multi-wall Carbon Nanotube(MWCNT))

  • 본 연구는 상업용 글라스아이오노머 시멘트(GIC) 분말에 기능화 다중벽 탄소나노튜브(MWCNT)를 첨가하여 항균효과와 기계적 성질을 개선하고자 하였다. MWCNT를 기존의 GIC 분말에 0.125, 0.25, 0.5와 1.0 wt%를 첨가하여 조성하였다. 비커스 경도(VHN)는 (Ø$10mm{\times}2mm$) 각각 4개의 시편을 제작하여 증류수에 1일, 7일, 14일 보관 후 200 N 하중에서 20초 유지시간으로 경도를 측정하였으며 항균효과는 S. mutans와 S. aureus균주를 아가 디스크 확산법으로 억제대를 측정하여 평가하였다. 실험 결과 비커스 경도는 MWCNT를 첨가한 실험군에서 높은값을 보였으며 MWCNT를 첨가한 모든 실험군에서 침전시간이 증가할수록 유의하게 높은 경도값을 보였다(p<0.05). 항균실험은 S. mutans균에서 다소 높은 항균효과를 보였으나 통계적으로 유의한 차이는 나타나지 않았으며, S. aureus균은 MWCNT를 0.25 wt%첨가한 군에서 통계적으로 유의한 차이점을 보였다(p<0.05). 이상의 결과로 MWCNT를 첨가한 GIC는 항균효과와 기계적 성질에 효과가 있음을 입증하였다. 추후 MWCNT의 효율적인 기능화 처리에 대한 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

Humic Acid와 중금속(Cu, Mn, Zn)제거를 위한 Ferrate(VI)의 적용 (Application of Ferrate(VI) to the Removal of Humic Acid and Heavy Metals (Cu, Mn, and Zn))

  • 본 연구에서는 다목적으로 사용가능하고 환경친화적인 potassium ferrate를 이용하여 강물의 humic acid와 중금속(Cu, Mn, Zn)을 동시에 제거하고자 하였다. 0.03${\sim}$0.7 mM (as Fe) ferrate를 이용해서 0.1 mM 중금속을 처리한 결과, Cu에 대해 28${\sim}$99%, Mn에 대해 22${\sim}$73%, Zn에 대해18${\sim}$100%의 제거효율을 얻었다. Humic acid와 중금속의 혼합용액에 0.03${\sim}$0.7 mM (as Fe) ferrate를 주입하여 각 물질을 다음과 같이 동시에 효과적으로 제거할 수 있었다: 49${\sim}$81% (humic acid), 93${\sim}$100% (Cu), 22${\sim}$86% (Mn), 20${\sim}$100% (Zn). 혼합용액에서 humic acid와 각 중금속 제거효율이 단일 중금속과 humic acid 용액에서의 결과보다 높은데, 이는 혼합용액에 ferrate를 주입하기 전, humic acid의 음이온 작용기와 중금속 양이온의 반응에 의해 착화합물이 형성되어 일부가 제거되었기 때문이다.
