  • Objective: The aim of this study was to predict human performance time in finding objects on multi-display monitors using ACT-R cognitive architecture. Background: Display monitors are one of the representative interfaces for interaction between people and the system. Nowadays, the use of multi-display monitors is increasing so that it is necessary to research about the interaction between users and the system on multi-display monitors. Method: A cognitive model using ACT-R cognitive architecture was developed for the model-based evaluation on multi-display monitors. To develop the cognitive model, first, an experiment was performed to extract the latency about the where system of ACT-R. Then, a menu selection experiment was performed to develop a human performance model to find objects on multi-display monitors. The validation of the cognitive model was also carried out between the developed ACT-R model and empirical data. Results: As a result, no significant difference on performance time was found between the model and empirical data. Conclusion: The ACT-R cognitive architecture could be extended to model human behavior in the search of objects on multi-display monitors.. Application: This model can help predicting performance time for the model-based usability evaluation in the area of multi-display work environments.

  • In this paper, our research efforts and activities for displaying flight simulation graphics on multi-monitors connected to a Linux cluster is introduced. In this pilot system graphics rendering as well as view calculation including LOD implementation for each monitor is peformed on each sub-node computer connected to the monitor rather than using an expensive main server. The Linux cluster is constructed by combining general-purpose desktop computers, and MPI library Is used for communication between sub-nodes. It could be concluded from our experience that it is possible to construct a massive multi-monitor display system by adding to the cluster as many sub-node computers and monitors as possible with economic efficiency.

  • This paper presents a new technology, Advanced Dynamic Capacitance Compensation (A-DCC), for improved dynamic performance of LCD monitors. Conventional LCD monitors suffer from certain specific artifacts, such as wire-frame flicker and line dimming, which are not an issue for the simpler motion images found in television content. A-DCC addresses these more challenging monitor cases through an advanced architecture which analyzes multi-frame data and applies more comprehensive lookup table corrections according to the specific frame sequence.

  • A video wall controller has a special type of multi-monitor that displays multiple monitors on a single large screen by arranging them consecutively. Operator maps and stores the video and monitor in advance. In a small system the mapping task of videos and monitors is simple. But as the number of monitors increases, the number of mapping cases increases, and thus work efficiency decreases. In this paper, we propose a association rule-based recommender system which help improve the efficiency of mapping task.

  • We have developed a high performance vertical alignment TFT-LCD (Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display), that shows a high light transmittance, and wide viewing angle characteristics with an unusually high contrast ratio. In order to optimize the electro-optical properties we have studied the effect of cell parameters, multi-domain structure and retardation film compensation. With the optimized cell parameters and process conditions, we have achieved a 24" wide UXGA TFTLCD monitor (16:10 aspect ratio 1920X1200) showing a contrast ratio of over 500:1, panel transmittance near 4.5%, response time near 25 ms, and viewing angle higher than 80 degree in all directions.

  • We developed new WV-TN panel which has 170/170 viewing angle and 8ms response time. This viewing characteristics almost catch up with those of VA. To extend the viewing angle we optimized the cell design and LC parameters. This new technology strongly increase the demand of TN monitors especially for the monitor market larger than 19"

  • Recently, the digital signages display not only the rectangular shapes but also the various shapes and sizes. The high-resolution large-screen display monitors have evolved to multi-vision modes in which several screens are connected to one another. In this paper, we present the structure of an atypically shaped signage system in which the ROI changes with the rotation of the multiple displays. The inclination angle of the monitor is calculated by taking the output value of the gyro sensor inter-locked with the Arduino, and an image in which the position of the four corners is varied according to the rotation angle by using the polar coordinate system. In order to display images in the multi-screen environment, multiple displays with a gyro sensor were controlled using serial communication. As the result, we have obtained the flexibly moving monitor systems with associated images fitting in them.

  • In display systems employing analog monitors, the tearing artifact such that an window screen is divided into two parts showing different scenes can occur when the change of scenes in the moving pictures is very fast, but the frame buffer's refresh rate does not match the monitor's scanning frequency. It is especially noticeable at high frame rate. DVR system is a recently popularized visual monitoring system. The tearing artifacts becomes more serious since the frame buffer's refresh rate is very high due to the requirement of multi channel display in the DVR. In this paper, we propose an improved display system for windows-based DVR systems which prevents the tearing artifacts without deterioration of display speed performance. The efficiency of the proposed display system is verified through experiments.

  • Cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) has been used as a light source for direct type backlights for LCD monitors or TV. One inverter for one CCFL was necessary for maintaining the lamp current so that many inverters were used to drive as many CCFLs of direct type backlight for LCD TV. An inverter for driving 16 CCFLs was developed to reduce the backlight cost. The length and diameter of CCFL were 450mm and 4mm, respectively. Backlight including 16 CCFLs for 26" LCD TV was assembled by using one inverter. The uniformities of the assembled backlight operated by the conventional inverter and the newly developed inverter were 75% and 88%, respectively.
