  • In this study, the method for calculation of the frequency transfer function of motions based on the multi-directional waves in the analysis of a full-scale seakeeping trials is presented. For calculation of the frequency transfer function in the directional waves, Takezawa's inverse estimation method was introduced and the frequency ranges were divided into three parts in order to consider following seas. To confirm the validity of this method, the numerical simulation was executed. Those results show that analysis method of the multi-directional waves is more reliable than that of one directional waves, and confirm the possibility of applying this method to the full-scathe seakeeping trials.

  • A numerical procedure is described for simultaneously predicting the motion and structural responses of tension leg platforms (TLPs) in multi-directional irregular waves. The developed numerical approach is based on a combination of a three dimensional source distribution method, the finite element method for structurally treating the space frame elements and a spectral analysis technique of directional waves. The spectral description for the linear responses of a structure in the frequency domain is sufficient to completely define the responses. This is because both the wave inputs and the responses are stationary Gaussian ran dom process of which the statistical properties in the amplitude domain are well known. The hydrodynamic interactions among TLP members, such as columns and pontoons, are included in the motion and structural analysis. The effect of wave directionality has been pointed out on the first order motion, tether forces and structural responses of a TLP in multi-directional irregular waves.

  • In this study, transmission and reflection of multi-directional random waves propagating over impermeable submerged breakwaters are calculated by using eigenfunction expansion method. A series of mutiderectional random waves is generated by using the Bretschneider-Mitsuyasu frequency and Mitsuyasu type directional spectrum. Strong reflection is occurred at the Bragg reflection condition of the peak frequency. If the row of breakwaters is fixed at 3 and the relative height of breakwater is fixed at 0.6, more than 25% of incident wave energy is reflected to offshore. It is also found that the reflection of directionally spreading random waves increases as the maximum spreading parameter $s_{max}$ increases.

  • In this study, transmission and reflection of multi-directional random waves propagating over multi-arrayed submerged breakwaters are investigated using eigenfunction expansion method. The numerical analysis on the wave energy reflection of submerged breakwaters with various crown widths is carried out. Strong wave reflection is occurred at the Bragg reflection condition of the peak frequency. When relative heights and crown widths of breakwaters are equal to 0.6 and 0.4h, respectively, more than 25% of wave energy is reflected to off shore.

  • It is of great importance to represent the directional ocean waves in a laboratory basin for hydraulic model tests. The directional ocean waves can be expressed as a linear superposition of a large number of component waves with different frequencies and propagating directions. The aim of the study is to check the wave generating characteristics by serpent-type wave generating system in PKNU (Pukyong National University) which is composed of 10 piston-type wave generators. In the experiment, spatial variation of irregular wave heights and propagating angles are measured in the multi-directional wave maker basin. Target wave directional spectrum is reproduced in the area of multi-directional wave maker basin. The directional spreading of the generated waves varied spacially in the basin. They differed from target spectrum as the measurement point becomes far from the center line normal to the generator face, The effective generation area where that target can be reproduced is limited to the triangular area attached the generator face. According to the results, it is emphasized that the effective experiment area in the basin considered wave generator characteristics should be determined in consideration of experimental conditions including structural shapes, water depth, wave directionality etc.

  • A three-dimensional multidirectional nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT) based on the Navier-Stokes equations and the Finite Volume Method (FVM) is developed by using the two-phase hydrodynamic flow solver naoe-FOAM-SJTU based on the open source toolbox OpenFOAM. The free surface is capturing with the Volume Of Fluids (VOF). The directional wave including Stokes wave, solitary wave and nonlinear wave are simulated and verified. The multi-directional waves are also simulated with particular wave spectral such as JONSWAP and wave directional spreading function. The obtained numerical results show the capability of the solver to generate different type of multidirectional nonlinear waves accurately. Meanwhile, it implies that the presented NWT can easily extend to model the wave-structures interactions, which will be great help to the offshore structures design.

  • Directional breaking waves are generated by the component wave focusing both in direction and frequency based on constant wave steepness and constant wave amplitude spectrum models. The generated breaking waves are classified in the incipient, single and multi breaking waves. The characteristics of directional breaking waves are investigated in terms of surface profile parameters of wave crest steepness and asymmetry. The evolution of breaking wave characteristics is analyzed in a view of focusing efficiency. It shows that the front steepness and vertical asymmetry play an important role in breaking process, while the crest rear steepness and horizontal asymmetry are nearly constant during the process. The superposition of directional components greatly enhances the focusing efficiency and it suggests that characteristics of directional breaking waves may significantly different from uni-directional ones.

  • By employing multi-directional random waves, a parameter controlling the force acting on a long caisson breakwater is investigated in detail. Both JONSWAP (Joint North Sea Wave Project) and asymmetric directional spectra are adopted for frequency and directional spectra. It is found that the parameter decreases as the length of caisson and the angle of main direction of incident waves increase. Furthermore, the parameter is much similar to that of regular waves as the maximum spreading parameter $s_{max}$ increases. The parameter, however, decreases as asymmetry parameter ${\mu}$ increases when the main direction of incident waves is oblique to the breakwater.
