For Ka-band satellite communication system, a new flexible payload technologies which can compensate rain attenuation have to be developed. The Ka-band satellite output power control technology enables to adjust downlink output power of satellite payload in Ka-band (19.8 ~ 22.2 GHz). In this paper, we introduce multi-beam antenna with multi-port amplifiers for Ka-band flexible output power allocation system. We have designed multi-beam antenna with array-fed reflector to form 8 beams on the Korean Peninsula. The target EIRP per beam is more than 59 dBW. The system is designed to present 6 dB boost beams for rainfall areas. Individual beams were optimized by the excited amplitude and phase of feed elements of the feed cluster. The multi-port amplifier(MPA) is one of effective approaches for flexible power allocation in combination with multi-beam antenna. In case of using MPA in multi-beam system, the inter-port isolation characteristic of MPA is important parameter to avoid interference among the output ports. In this paper, we propose a new MPA structure that consists of two $4{\times}4$ Buttler matrixes and phase/amplitude controllable power amplifier modules.

This paper presents the study on multi-beam large aperture antenna systems for a satellite payload. Multi-beam large antenna provides the universal communication and broadcasting services to personal portable terminals. The hybrid antenna composed of a large reflector and a feed array forms multi-beams. The feed cluster consists of a group of feed elements and each element should be optimized for the appropriate amplitude and phase. The optimization progress for amplitude and phase was performed by GO (Geometrical Optics) and PO (Physical Optics) method. The number of feed elements as well as the power level per element were also optimized to meet the required EIRP (Effective Isotropically Radiated Power). In conclusion, 30m-class reflector and twenty five elements for fifteen beams over Korean Peninsula were designed through the optimization process.
Current studies based on the DVB-S2x standard for the next-generation multi-beam HTS/BH satellite have been investigated. To enhance the efficiency of the transmission throughput and maximize the utilization of the satellite payload resources and bandwidth, the concepts of two advanced techniques, namely, precoding and BH, are described. Furthermore, state-of-the-art aspects currently under discussion, and future study items in the DVB TM-S standardization group, are summarized in this article.
Communication systems, including cell-based mobile communication systems, multiple satellite communication systems of multi-beam satellite systems, require reliable handoff methods between cell-to-cell, satellite-to-satellite of beam-to-team, respectively. Recent measurement of a CDMA cellular system indicates that the system is in handoff at about 35% to 70% of an average call period. Therefore, system reliability during handoff is one of the major system performance parameters and eventually becomes a factor in the overall system capacity. This paper presents novel and improved techniques for handoff in cellular communications, multi-beam and multi-satellite systems that require handoff during a session. this new handoff system combines the soft handoff mechanism currently implemented in the IS-95 CDMA with code and packet diversity combining techniques and an iterative decoding algorithm (Turbo Coding). the Turbo code introduced by Berrou et all. has been demonstrated its remarkable performance achieving the near Shannon channel capacity [1]. Recently. Turbo codes have been adapted as the coding scheme for the data transmission of the third generation international cellular communication standards : UTRA and CDMA 2000. Our proposed encoder and decoder schemes modified from the original Turbo code is suitable for the code and packet diversity combining techniques. this proposed system provides not only an unprecedented coding gain from the Turbo code and it iterative decoding, but also gain induced by the code and packet diversity combining technique which is similar to the hybrid Type II ARQ. We demonstrate performance improvements in AWGN channel and Rayleigh fading channel with perfect channel state information (CSI) through simulations for at low signal to noise ratio and analysis using exact upper bounding techniques for medium to high signal to noise ratio.

The time slot assignment problem (TSAP) or Satellite Communications scheduling problem (SCSP) for a satellite performs $n{\times}n$ ground station data traffic switching has been known NP-hard problem. This paper suggests $O(n^2)$ time complexity algorithm for TSAP of a satellite that performs $n^2{\times}n^2$ ground station data traffic switching. This problem is more difficult than $n{\times}n$ TSAP as NP-hard problem. Firstly, we compute the average traffic for n-transponder's basic coverage zone and applies ground station exchange method that swap the ground stations until all of the transponders have a average value as possible. Nextly, we transform the D matrix to $D_{LB}$ traffic matrix that sum of rows and columns all of transponders have LB. Finally, we select the maximum traffic of row and column in $D_{LB}$, then decide the duration of kth switch mode to minimum traffic from selected values. The proposed algorithm can be get the optimal solution for experimental data.
This paper is made to suggest a future strategy for the Korean High Resolution Wide Swath Synthetic Aperture Radar (HRWS SAR) satellite development by surveying the current trends for the SAR satellite technologies. From the survey, the latest SAR technology trends are revealed of using Digital Beam-Forming (DBF), SCan-On-Receive (SCORE), Displaced Phase Center Antenna (DPCA), interferometry, and polarimetry for exploiting the SAR imagery. Based on the latest SAR technology trends and the foreign HRWS SAR development cases, the strategy for the future HRWS Korean SAR satellite development is suggested to develop the DPCA and SCORE technologies by using the KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-6 (KOMPSAT-6) which is going to launch in a few years, and consequently to develop the HRWS SAR satellites which can monitor the whole Earth at weekly intervals.

In the satellite communications, the frequency sharing with other services is important because the service coverage is generally very wide and overlaps with those of other wireless services. This paper introduces a new technique to mitigate interference into the terrestrial stations from the Earth station in the same frequency band by means of band segmentations which are portions of the overall operation frequency band divided by frequency reuse factor. We consider a multi-beam satellite system, where frequency bands are reused in each satellite cell. The terrestrial stations use band segmentations of adjacent satellite cells, and this may decrease the interferences. By this way, the terrestrial and satellite systems can share the same frequency bands efficiently. The simulation is performed at frequency reuse factors, seven and three. The simulation results show that the proposed method can highly reduce the interference level to -168 dBW or -163 dBW depending on the considered frequency reuse factor from -117 dBW at the 90% link availability.

GPS receivers can be disrupted by intentional or unintentional jamming, then it is unable to receive GPS signals and it is impossible to get the correct navigation results. Anti-jamming schemes using array antennas are being studied well due to high performance of those, and the efforts to apply them to GPS receiver are also being done. A GPS receiver structure for a multiple beam-forming scheme among those schemes has been proposed in this paper, and the performance is also compared with that using a general GPS receiver structure. For a general GPS receiver structure, each satellite signal which is formed by a beam-forming scheme is summed to be processed in a part of digital signal processing. For a proposed GPS receiver structure, however, each satellite signal is respectively processed by a designated channel in a part of digital signal processing. Finally, it is confirmed that the proposed GPS receiver structure is superior to a general GPS receiver structure in a point of the carrier to noise power ratio and the navigation accuracy using a software platform.

This paper proposes a hybrid antenna with novel beam steering scheme. The antenna have a cassegrain structure composed of two reflectors. The main reflector is designed for high gain performance using parabola curvature, and the sub-reflector is plate and can be rotated by ${\pm}3^{\circ}$. Thus proposed antenna can steer a antenna beam using the inclination of sub-reflector. A feed array composed of 20 elements is adapted as a feeder for electrical beam steering, and the antenna can be possible to steer the beam by the feed array with sub-reflector. Proposed antenna was fabricated to be operated in Ka-band(30.085$\sim$30.885 GHz) for TX and K-band(20.355$\sim$21.155 GHz), which are the operation frequencies of the Korean satellite, Mugunhwa, to provide satellite multi-media service to vehicles. By the performance test, it can be known that the antenna has minimum gain of 47 dBi for TX and 44.4 dBi for TX and can steer the beam by ${\pm}2^{\circ}$ with sub-reflector.
