  • The extinction characteristics of low strain rate normal gravity (1-g) nonpremixed methane-air flames were studied numerically and experimentally. A time-dependent axisymmetric two-dimensional (2D) model considering buoyancy effects and radiative heat transfer was developed to capture the structure and extinction limits of 1-g flames. One-dimensional (1D) computations were also conducted to provide information on 0-g flames. A 3-step global reaction mechanism was used in both the 1D and 2D computations to predict the measured extinction limit and flame temperature. A specific maximum heat release rate was introduced to quantify the local flame strength and to elucidate the extinction mechanism. Overall fractional contribution by each term in the energy equation to the heat release was evaluated to investigate the multi-dimensional structure and radiative extinction of 1-g flames. Images of flames were taken for comparison with the model calculation undergoing extinction. The two-dimensional numerical model was validated by comparing flame temperature profiles and extinction limits with experiments and ID computation results. The 2D computations yielded insight into the extinction mode and flame structure of 1-g flames. Two combustion regimes depending on the extinction mode were identified. Lateral heat loss effects and multi-dimensional flame structure were also found. At low strain rates of 1-g flame ('Regime A'), the flame is extinguished from the weak outer flame edge, which is attributed to multi-dimensional flame structure and flow field. At high strain rates, ('Regime B'), the flame extinction initiates near the flame centerline due to an increased diluent concentration in reaction zone, which is the same as the extinction mode of 1D flame. These two extinction modes could be clearly explained with the specific maximum heat release rate.

  • Numerical analysis has been conducted to simulate pedestrian flow in the model of two-storied subway station. Because almost all the subway stations are two or three storied structure, simulations are conducted for the passengers those who get off the train and pass the wicket. Passenger flow analysis is very important factor to design the station and also to manage the operation of subway system. In the subway station, pedestrians move to the horizontal directions as well as vertical ones. Therefore, to consider the movement of pedestrians is necessary for the guarantee of safety and conveniency. As the up and down floors are connected with step, escalator and elevator, the entire movements in the multi-storied station should be simulated as like a 3-dimensional flow. Numerical schemes for the directional sweeping are developed to prevent the dependency on physical structure of station and to determine primary direction and secondary one. By using the developed program, we compared the simulation results of the effects of the location and size of exit and elapsed time.

  • Purpose In this paper we proposed bi-directional hierarchical regression for accurate human finger landmark detection with only using depth information.Materials and Methods Our algorithm consisted of two different step, initialization and landmark estimation. To detect initial landmark, we used difference of random pixel pair as the feature descriptor. After initialization, 16 landmarks were estimated using cascaded regression methods. To improve accuracy and stability, we proposed bi-directional hierarchical structure. Results In our experiments, the ICVL database were used for evaluation. According to our experimental results, accuracy and stability increased when applying bi-directional hierarchical regression more than typical method on the test set. Especially, errors of each finger tips of hierarchical case significantly decreased more than other methods. Conclusion Our results proved that our proposed method improved accuracy and stability and also could be applied to a large range of applications such as augmented reality and simulation surgery.

  • In this paper, a multi-step optimization using genetic algorithm with variable penalty function is introduced to the structural design optimization of a grinding machine. The design problem, in this study, is to find out the optimum configuration and dimensions of structural members which minimize the static compliance, the dynamic compliance, and the weight of the machine structure simultaneously under several design constraints such as dimensional constraints, maximum deflection limit, safety criterion, and maximum vibration amplitude limit. The first step is shape optimization, in which the best structural configuration is found by getting rid of structural members that have no contributions to the design objectives from the given initial design configuration. The second and third steps are sizing optimization. The second design step gives a set of good design solutions having higher fitness for lightweight and minimum static compliance. Finally the best solution, which has minimum dynamic compliance and weight, is extracted from the good solution set. The proposed design optimization method was successfully applied to the structural design optimization of a grinding machine. After optimization, both static and dynamic compliances are reduced more than 58.4% compared with the initial design, which was designed empirically by experienced engineers. Moreover the weight of the optimized structure are also slightly reduced than before.

  • In this study, a multi-step optimization technique combined with a simple genetic algorithm is introduce to the structural design optimization of a high speed machining center. In this case, the design problem is to find out the best design variables which minimize the static compliance, the dynamic compliance, and the weight of the machine structure and meet some design constraints simultaneously. Dimensional thicknesses of the thirteen structural members along the static force loop of the machine structure are adopted as design variables. The first optimization step is a static design optimization, in which the static compliance and the weight are minimized under some dimensional and safety constraints. The second step is a dynamic design optimization, where the dynamic compliance and the weight are minimized under the same constraints. After optimization, the weight of the moving body was reduced to 9.1% of the initial design respectively. Both static and dynamic compliances of the optimum design are also in the feasible range even thought they were slightly increased than before.

  • The composition of convergence cross-section of the material is a technique that provides reasonable design and construction of structures. It is frequently used in medium-sized bridges and architectural structures. However, the structural behavioral spare capacity enhancement of the structure by the application of the convergence cross-section is still limited by the expandability due to the limiting state of each material. In order to overcome these limitations, this study reasonably analyzed the construction stages before and after the convergence cross-section constructed and developed a technique for forming multi-point boundary conditions using struts, which are compression members. Based on the existing cases, a reasonable construction step for forming the material composite section of the entire structural system of the structure was derived, and a numerical analysis model for a specific part was constructed to analyze the behavior of the strut application. As a result of this study, the effect of reducing the sectional force of 7.40% in beam-column joint and 6.31% in the center of girder was derived, and the deflection, which is a measure of the serviceability of the structure, improved by 54.41% from the installation and dismantling of strut members at each construction stage.

  • Though a nonlinear time history analysis may be provided to estimate more exactly the seismic performance of building structure, approximation methods are still needed in the aspect of practicality and simplicity, In converting a multi-story structure to an equivalent SDOF system, the mode vectors of the multi-story structure are assumed as the mode shape in elastic state regardless of elastic or elastic-plastic state. However, the characteristics of displacement mode are also changed after the yielding made in the structural elements, because the structure becomes inelastic in each incremental load step. In this research, a method of converting MDOF system to ESDOF system is presented by using nonlinear displacement mode considering the mode change of structures after the yielding. Also, the accuracy and efficiency of the method of the nonlinear displacement mode method of the estimate of seismic response of Mixed Building Structures were examined by comparing the displacements of the roof level of the multi-story building structures estimated from this converted displacement response of ESDOF with the displacement of the roof level through the nonlinear dynamic analysis of the multi-story building structures subjected to an actual earthquake excitation.

  • This paper proposes a novel framework for image fusion of satellite imagery to enhance spatial resolution of the image via structure-texture decomposition. The resolution of the satellite imagery depends on the sensors, for example, panchromatic images have high spatial resolution but only a single gray band whereas multi-spectral images have low spatial resolution but multiple bands. To enhance the spatial resolution of low-resolution images, such as multi-spectral or infrared images, the proposed framework combines the structures from the low-resolution image and the textures from the high-resolution image. To improve the spatial quality of structural edges, the structure image from the low-resolution image is guided filtered with the structure image from the high-resolution image as the guidance image. The combination step is performed by pixel-wise addition of the filtered structure image and the texture image. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation demonstrate the proposed method preserves spectral and spatial fidelity of input images.

  • The feasibility of InSbTe (IST) chalcogenide materials prepared by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) for phase-change memory (PRAM) applications was demonstrated. Films grown below $225^{\circ}C$ exhibited an amorphous structure, and the films grown at $300^{\circ}C$ Cincluded various crystalline phases such as In-Sb-Te, In-Sb, In-Te, and Sb-Te. The composition of the amorphous films grown at $225^{\circ}C$ was dependent on the working pressure. Films grown at $225^{\circ}C$ exhibited a smooth morphology with a root mean square(rms) roughness of less than 1nm, and the step-coverage of the films grown on a trench structure with an aspect ratio of 5:1 was greater than 90%. An increase in deposition time increased the filling rate, while retaining the conformal step-coverage. Films grown at $225^{\circ}C$ for 3h in a working pressure of $13{\times}10^2$ Pa exhibited a reproducible and complete filling in a trench structure.

  • Red-emitting nitride phosphors recently attracted considerable attention because of their high thermal stability and high color rendering index properties. For excellent phosphor of white light-emitting-diode, ternary nitride phosphor of $Sr/SmSi_5N_8:Eu^{2+}$ with different $Eu^{2+}$ ion concentration were synthesized by solid state reaction method. In this work, red-emitting nitride $Sr/SmSi_5N_8:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor was successfully synthesized by using multi-step high frequency induction heat treatment. The effects of molar ratio of component and experimental conditions on luminescence property of prepared phosphors have been investigated. The structure and luminescence properties of prepared $Sr/SmSi_5N_8:Eu^{2+}$ phosphors were investigated by XRD and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The excitation spectra of $Sr/SmSi_5N_8:Eu^{2+}$ phosphors indicated broad excitation wavelength range of 300 - 550 nm, namely from UV to visible area with distinct enhanced emission peaks. With an increase of $Eu^{2+}$ ion concentration, the peak position of emission in spectra was red-shifted from 613 to 671 nm. After via multi-step heat treatment, prepared phosphor showed excellent luminescence properties, such as high emission intensity and low thermal quenching, better than commercial phosphor of $Y_3Al_5O_{12}:Ce^{3+}$. Using $Eu_2O_3$ as a raw material for $Eu^{2+}$ dopant with nitrogen gas flowing instead of using commercial EuN chemical for $Sr/SmSi_5N_8:Eu^{2+}$ synthesis is one of characteristic of this work.
