Development of a Design System for Multi-Stage Gear Drives Considering Configuration Design (배치설계를 고려한 다단 기어장치 설계 시스템 개발)

  • The design of multi-stage gear drives is a time-consuming process that includes additional design problems, which are not considered in the design of single-stage gear drives. In the previous research works, the authors have proposed a new algorithm to design multi-stage gear drives at the preliminary design phase. The proposed design algorithm automates the design process by integrating the dimensional design and the configuration design process. In the configuration design process, the positions of gears and shafts are determined by minimizing the geometrical volume (size) of a gearbox. However, various types of spatial constraints should be satisfied in practical design situation. To locate input and output shaft in specified positions is the typical example of such problems. In this paper, the authors show the formulations of spatial constraints applied to the design of four-stage gear drives. The design solution shows considerably good results, and the design system is confirmed to be readily applicable to practical design situation.

  • We conducted a multi-stage optimization to secure the desired performance of a centrifugal fan for home appliance in an early stage of product development. In optimization, the static pressure at the outlet of the fan is chosen as an objective function that is to be maximized, providing the required flow rate at the operating point of the fan. The optimization procedure begins with parameters for an initial baseline fan design. The baseline design is optimized by using a commercial optimization package. Accordingly, the corresponding blade models with a set of geometrical parameters are generated. Flow through a fan is simulated by solving the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. A multi-stage optimization scheme is employed to determine the family of optimum values for the parameters, leading to the pressure increase at the outlet of the fan. To validate the numerically obtained optimal design parameters, we fabricated the three types of fans using rapid prototyping and assessed the performance using a fan tester. Experimental results show that the design parameters at each stage satisfy the goal of optimization. The multi-stage optimization process turned out to be a useful tool in the development of a centrifugal fan.

Off-Design Performance Prediction of Multi-Stage Axial-Compressor by Stage-Stacking Method (단 축적법을 이용한 다단 축류 압축기 탈설계 성능예측)

  • In this study, a program for the off-design performance prediction of multi-stage axial-compressors is developed based on stage-stacking method. To account for the increased losses at off-design conditions, generalized performance curve is applied. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the choice of generalized performance curve and stator exit angle. For this purpose, we tested various generalized performance curves and stator exit angles. In conclusion, Muir's pressure coefficient curve gives a good prediction results regardless of the efficiency curve for a low-stage compressors. On the other hand, for high-stage compressors, The combination of Muir's pressure coefficient curve and Stone's efficiency curve gives a optimistic results. Stator exit angle has a small effect on overall performance curve.

  • In this study, to investigate the effect of the generalized performance curve on the performance prediction and to find the optimal ones, a systematic study is performed. For this purpose, we compared the influence of the stage performance curves with experimental data in multi-stage axial compressors. As a result, it is discovered that the optimal generalized performance curves vary according to the number of the stages in compressors. And we found that for a low-stage compressors, Muir's pressure coefficient curve gives the best prediction results at design rotational frequency regardless of the efficiency curve. On the other hand, for high-stage compressors, Stone's pressure coefficient curve gives the optimistic results about the performance prediction at design rotational frequency.

  • In this paper, we present a new multi-level logic synthesis method for producing the multi-level circuits which can be easily tested by the pseudoexhaustive testing techniques. The method consists of four stages. In the first stage, it generates the minimum variable supports for each output of a multiple-output function. In the second stage, it removes the minimum variable supports which if used to implement the outputs, lead to inefficient pseudoexhaustive test. In the third stage, it determines the minimum variable support and logic (uncomplementary or complementary logic) for each output. In the fourth stage, it performs the multi-level logic synthesis so that each output. In the fourth stage, it performs the multi-level logic synthesis so that each output has the minimum variable support and logic determined in the third stage. To evaluate the performance and quality of the proposed method, we have experimented on the 56 benchmark examples. The results show that for 56 examples, our method obtains better results than MIS in terms of testability. Moreover, the method produces better results for 19 examples and the same results for 12 examples compared with MIS in terms of literal count although it has been developed to improve the testability.

Structural damage identification of truss structures using self-controlled multi-stage particle swarm optimization

  • The present work proposes a self-controlled multi-stage optimization method for damage identification of structures utilizing standard particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Damage identification problem is formulated as an inverse optimization problem where damage severity in each element of the structure is considered as optimization variables. An efficient objective function is formed using the first few frequencies and mode shapes of the structure. This objective function is minimized by a self-controlled multi-stage strategy to identify and quantify the damage extent of the structural members. In the first stage, standard PSO is utilized to get an initial solution to the problem. Subsequently, the algorithm identifies the most damage-prone elements of the structure using an adaptable threshold value of damage severity. These identified elements are included in the search space of the standard PSO at the next stage. Thus, the algorithm reduces the dimension of the search space and subsequently increases the accuracy of damage prediction with a considerable reduction in computational cost. The efficiency of the proposed method is investigated and compared with available results through three numerical examples considering both with and without noise. The obtained results demonstrate the accuracy of the present method can accurately estimate the location and severity of multi-damage cases in the structural systems with less computational cost.

  • We propose two robust blind equalization algorithms based on multi-stage clustering blind equalization algorithm, which are called a complex classification update algorithm(CCUA) and an error compensation algorithm(ECA). The first algorithm is a tap-updating algorithm which each computes classified real and imaginary parts in order to reduce computations and the complexity of implementation as a stage increase. The second one is a algorithm which can achieve faster convergence speed because error of equalizer input make always fixed. Test results confirm that the proposed algorithms with faster convergence and lower complexity outperforms both constant modulus algorithm (CMA) and conventional multi-stage blind clustering algorithm(MSA) in reducing the SER as well as the MSE at the equalizer output.

  • The multi-stage control valve is one of the devices which controls cavitation and high pressure drop. To attain the high pressure drop, the conventional control valves adopted the multi-stage trim to avoid the occurrence of local cavitation in valves. This work studied the effect of divergence angle on the characteristics of multi-stage trim. Pressure drop and flow characteristics was calculated for the 1 passage of multi-staged trim by using the FLUENT 6.3.26. The result showed that the pressure drop is significantly influenced by the divergence angle of multi-stage trim. In addition, the pressure drop increased consistently as the Reynolds number and divergence angle increases.

  • An inverse finite element approach is employed for more capability to design the optimum blank shape from the desired final shape with small amount of expense and computation time For multi-stage sheet metal forming processes numerical analysis is expense difficult to carry out the to its complexities and convergence problem. It also requires lots of computation time. For the analysis of elliptic cup with large aspect ratio intermediate sliding constraint surfaces are difficult to describe. in this paper multi-stage finite element inverse analysis is applied to multi-stage elliptic cup drawing processes to calculate intermediate blank shapes and strain distributions in each stages. To describe intermediate sliding constraint surfaces an analytic scheme is introduced to deal with merged-arc type sliding surfaces.

  • A preliminary design process in the multi-stage gear drives design is important part. a preliminary design support system which run efficiently the design is developed with fuzzy expert system. the system automatically generate the mechanism of multi-stats gear drives and select a candidate mechanism by the general expert rule and sorting using fuzzy expert system. the preliminary mechanism design of multi-stage gear drives have a short execution time, add accuracy in a preliminary design considering volume, cost, power and efficiency in preliminary, a design efficiency is increased and a preliminary design have a elasticity using a weight on variable's sorting mechanism.
