  • Nowadays, various speech processing systems are being introduced in the fields of robotics. However, real-time processing and high performances are required to properly implement speech processing system for the autonomous robots. Achieving these goals requires advanced hardware techniques including intelligent software algorithms. For example, we need nonlinear amplifier boards which are able to adjust the compression radio (CR) via computer programming. And the necessity for noise reduction, double-buffering on EPLD (Erasable programmable logic device), simultaneous multi-channel AD conversion, distant sound localization will be explained in this paper. These ideas can be used to improve distant and omni-directional speech recognition. This speech processing system, based on embedded Linux system, is supposed to be mounted on the new home service robot, which is being developed at KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology)

  • In this paper, we present the Q-learning method for adaptive traffic signal control on the basis of multi-agent technology. The structure is composed of sixphase agents and one intersection agent. Wireless communication network provides the possibility of the cooperation of agents. As one kind of reinforcement learning, Q-learning is adopted as the algorithm of the control mechanism, which can acquire optical control strategies from delayed reward; furthermore, we adopt dynamic learning method instead of static method, which is more practical. Simulation result indicates that it is more effective than traditional signal system.

  • A new monitoring system is proposed to give direct visual information of the remote site when working with a tele-operation system. In order to have a similar behavior of a human when he is inspecting an object, multiple cameras that have different view point are attached around the robot hand and are switched on and elf according to the operator´s motion such as joystick manipulation or operator´s head movement.   • This paper presents the method for detection and tracking of multiple humans robustly in mobile platform. The perception of human is performed in real time through the processing of images acquired from a moving stereo vision system. We performed multi-cue integration such as human shape, skin color and depth information to detect and track each human in moving background scene.   • A new method to control a robot manipulator by neural networks is proposed. The controller is composed of both a PD controller and a neural network-based feedforward controller. MLP(multi-layer perceptron) neural network is used for the feedforward controller and trained by BP(back-propagation) learning rule. Error terms for BP learning rule are composed of the outputs of a PD controller and the acceleration errors of manipulator joints. We compare the proposed method with existing ones and contrast performances of them by simulation. Also, We discuss the real application of the proposed method in consideration of the learning time of the neural network and the time required for sensing the joint acceleration.

  • In the original model-based paradigm in the field of motion planning of robots, robots had to play the focal role of considering all situations under which they made decisions and operate. Such paradigm makes it difficult to respond efficiently to the dynamically shifting environment such as disaster area. In order to handle such a situation that may be changed dynamically, a technology that allows a dynamic execution of data transmission and physical/network connection between multiple robots based on scenarios is required. In this paper, we deal with evolutionary robots that adapt to any given environment and execute scenarios, specially focused on the development of a simulator to test the evolutionary process of cooperated multiple robots.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of a real-time, high-precision vision system and its application to SMT(surface mounting technology) automation. The vision system employs a 32 bit MC68030 as a main processor, and consists of image acquisition unit. DSP56001 DSP based vision processor, and several algorithmically dedicated hardware modules. The image acquisition unit provides 512*480*8 bit image for high-precision vision tasks. The DSP vision processor and hardware modules, such as histogram extractor and feature extractor, are designed for a real-time excution of vision algorithms. Especially, the implementation of multi-processing architecture based on DSP vision processors allows us to employ more sophisticated and flexible vision algorithms for real-time operation. The developed vision system is combined with an Adept Robot system to form a complete SMD system. It has been found that the vision guided SMD assembly system is able to provide a satisfactory performance for SND automation.

  • In this paper, a hybrid neural network is proposed to improve the learning ability of a neural network. The union of the characteristics of a Self-Organizing Neural Network model and of multi-layer perceptron model using the backpropagation learning method gives us the advantage of reduction of the learning error and the learning time. In learning process, the proposed hybrid neural network reduces the number of nodes in hidden layers to reduce the calculation time. And this proposed neural network uses the fuzzy feedback values, when it updates the responding region of each node in the hidden layer. To show the effectiveness of this proposed hybrid neural network, the boolean function(XOR, 3Bit Parity) and the solution of inverse kinematics are used. Finally, this proposed hybrid neural network is applied to the visual tracking control of a PUMA560 robot, and the result data is presented.
