Air-water flow measurements are of importance for the coastal and ocean engineering fields. Although kinematic investigations of the multi-phase flows have been conducted for long time, velocity measurements still are concerned with many researchers and engineers in coastal and ocean areas. In the present study, an imaging technique using shadowgraphy and fiber optic probe for velocity measurements of air bubbles is introduced. The shadow graphy image technique is modified from the typical image velocimetry methods, and optical fibers are used for the well-known intrusive coupled phase-detection probe system. Since the imaging technique is a non-intrusive optical method from the air, it is usually applied for 2D flows. On the other hand, the double fiber optic probes touch flows regardless of flow patterns. The results of the flow measurements by both methods are compared and discussed. The methods are also applied to the measurements of overtopping flows by a breaking wave over the structure fixed on the free surface.
First, methods of numerical analysis of gas-particle flows is classified into micro, meso and macro scale approaches based on the concept of multi-scale mechanics. Next, the explanation moves on to discrete particle simulation where motion of individual particles is calculated numerically using the Newtonian equations of motion. The author focuses on the cases where particle-to-particle interaction has significant effects on the phenomena. Concerning the particle-to-particle interaction, two cases are considered: the one is collision-dominated flows and the other is the contact-dominated flows. To treat this interaction mathematically, techniques named DEM(Distinct Element Method) or DSMC (Direct Simulation Monte Carlo) have been developed DEM, which has been developed in the field of soil mechanics, is useful for the contact -dominated flows and DSMC method, developed in molecular gas flows, is for the collision-dominated flows. Combining DEM or DSMC with CFD (computer fluid dynamics), the discrete particle simulation becomes a more practical tool for industrial flows because not only the particle-particle interaction but particle-fluid interaction can be handled. As examples of simulations, various results are shown, such as hopper flows, particle segregation phenomena, particle mixing in a rotating drum, dense phase pneumatic conveying, spouted bed, dense phase fluidized bed, fast circulating fluidized bed and so on.

A finite difference lattice Boltzmann model which allows us to simulate gas-liquid two-phase flows with large density difference, for instance, 800 times for air and water is considered. Two-particle model is used and the density difference is introduced by changing the acceleration according to the fluid density. Numerical measurement of surface tension agrees well with theoretical predictions. Simulations of two-phase phenomenon for phase-transition is carried out, showing applicability of the model for two-phase flows. The two-dimensional cavitating flow around a board set up in the fluid way is also simulated. As a result, it was confirmed that the FDLB method with two-particle model was effective in numerical simulation of cavitating flow and the bubble periodically grew up at the low pressure area behind the board, in which the fluid condition was influenced by the cavitation number.
Using modern techniques from scientific computing and numerical analysis, natural phenomena or scientific experiment can be simulated effectively with a computer and used for computer graphics, for example as special effects for the film industry, manufacturing the thin film, multi-phase simulation and image processing. The Level Set method can make those things happen without a lot of difficulties. This method was devised by Osher and Sethian(1988) to represent dynamically moving interfaces as the zero level set of a scalar function that evolves in time. Since then, many researchers have worked on many applications using a Level Set Method. I will give a talk about the applications of the Level Set Method.

The SMAC (Simplified Marker And Cell) algorithm is extended for an application to thermal non-equilibrium two-phase flows in light water nuclear reactors (LWRs). A two-fluid three-field model is adopted and a multi-dimensional unstructured grid is used for complicated geometries. The phase change and the time derivative terms appearing in the continuity equations are implemented implicitly in a pressure correction equation. The energy equations are decoupled from the momentum equations for faster convergence. The verification of the present numerical method was carried out against a set of test problems which includes the single and the two-phase flows. The results are also compared to those of the semi-implicit ICE method, where the energy equations are coupled with the momentum equation for pressure correction.

Most of the energy efficient MAC protocols for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are based on duty cycling in a single channel and show competitive performances in a small number of traffic flows; however, under concurrent multiple flows, they result in significant performance degradation due to contention and collision. We propose a multi-channel pipelining (MCP) method for convergecast WSN in order to address these problems. In MCP, a staggered dynamic phase shift (SDPS) algorithms devised to minimize end-to-end latency by dynamically staggering wake-up schedule of nodes on a multi-hop path. Also, a phase-locking identification (PLI) algorithm is proposed to optimize energy efficiency. Based on these algorithms, multiple flows can be dynamically pipelined in one of multiple channels and successively handled by sink switched to each channel. We present an analytical model to compute the duty cycle and the latency of MCP and validate the model by simulation. Simulation evaluation shows that our proposal is superior to existing protocols: X-MAC and DPS-MAC in terms of duty cycle, end-to-end latency, delivery ratio, and aggregate throughput.
For the analysis of transient two-phase flows in nuclear reactor components, a three-dimensional thermal hydraulics code, named CUPID, has been developed. The CUPID code adopts a two-fluid, three-field model for two-phase flows, and the governing equations were solved over unstructured grids, which are very useful for the analysis of flows in complicated geometries. To obtain numerical solutions, the semi-implicit numerical method for the REALP5 code was modified for an application to unstructured grids, and it has been further improved for enhanced accuracy and fast running. For the verification of the CUPID code, a set of conceptual problems and experiments were simulated. This paper presents the flow model, the numerical solution method, and the results of the preliminary assessment.
The cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many engineering systems, such as pump, turbine, nozzle, Infector, etc. In the present work, a solver for two-phase flows has been developed and applied to simulate the cavitating flows past hydrofoils. The governing equation is the two-phase Navier-Stokes equation, comprised of the continuity equation of liquid and vapor phase. The momentum and energy equation is in the mixture phase. The solver employs an implicit, dual time, preconditioned algorithm using finite difference scheme in curvilinear coordinates. An experimental data and other numerical data were compared with the present results to validate the present solver. It is concluded that the present numerical code has successfully accounted for two-phase Navier-Stokes model of cavitation flow.

The Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics is one of the most widely used mesh-free numerical method for thermo-fluid dynamics. Due to its Lagrangian nature and simplicity, it is recently gaining popularity in simulating complex physics with large deformations. In this study, the 3D single/two-phase numerical simulations are performed on the Liquid Metal Reactor (LMR) centralized sloshing benchmark experiment using the SPH parallelized using a GPU. In order to capture multi-phase flows with a large density ratio more effectively, the original SPH density and continuity equations are re-formulated in terms of the normalized-density. Based upon this approach, maximum sloshing height and arrival time in various experimental cases are calculated by using both single-phase and multi-phase SPH framework and the results are compared with the benchmark results. Overall, the results of SPH simulations show excellent agreement with all the benchmark experiments both in qualitative and quantitative manners. According to the sensitivity study of the particle-size, the prediction accuracy is gradually increasing with decreasing the particle-size leading to a higher resolution. In addition, it is found that the multi-phase SPH model considering both liquid and air provides a better prediction on the experimental results and the reality.

Recently, ocean nuclear reactors have received attention due to enhanced safety features. The movable and transportable characteristics distinguish ocean nuclear reactors from land-based nuclear reactors. Therefore, for safety/design analysis of the ocean reactor, the thermos-hydraulics must be investigated in the moving system. However, there are no studies reporting the general two-fluid equations that can be used for multi-dimensional simulations of two-phase flows in moving systems. This study is to systematically formulate the multi-dimensional two-fluid equations in the non-inertial frame of reference. To demonstrate the applicability of the formulated equations, we perform a total of six different simulations in 2D tanks with translational and/or rotational motions.
