In a multi-hop wireless network, connectivity is determined by the link that is established by the receiving signal strength computed by subtracting the path loss from the transmission power. Two path loss models are commonly used in research, namely two-ray ground and shadow fading, which determine the receiving signal strength and affect the link quality. Link quality is one of the key factors that affect network performance. In general, network performance improves with better link quality in a wireless network. In this study, we measure the network connectivity and performance in a shadow fading path loss model, and our observation shows that both are severely degraded in this path loss model. To improve network performance, we propose power control schemes utilizing link quality to identify the set of nodes required to adjust the transmission power in order to improve the network throughput in both homogeneous and heterogeneous multi-hop wireless networks. Numerical studies to evaluate the proposed schemes are presented and compared.

In this paper we have investigated a novel approach applying low-density parity-check coding to a COFDM-CDMA system, which operates in a multi-path fading mobile channel. Developed as a linear-block channel coder, the LDPC code is known for a superior signal reception capability in AWGN and/or flat fading channels with respect to increased encoding rates, however, its performance degrades when the communication channel becomes multi-path fading. For a typical multi-path fading mobile channel with a SNR of 16㏈ or lower. in order to obtain a BER lower than 1 out of 10000, the LDPC code with encoding rates below 1:3 requires not only the inherent parity check information but also the piloting information for refreshing front-end equalizer taps of COFDM-CDMA, periodically. For instance, while the 1:3-rate LDPC coded transmission symbol is consisted of data bits and parity-check bits in 1 to 3 proportion, on the other hand, in the proposed method the same rate LDPC transmission symbol contains data bits, parity check bits, and pilot bits in 1 to 2 to 1 proportion, respectively. The included pilot bits are effective not only for channel estimation and channel equalization but for symbol decoding by assisting the parity-check bits, hence, improving SNR vs BER performance over the conventional 1:3-rate LDPC code. The proposed system performance has been verified using computer simulations in multi-path, Rayleigh fading channels, and the results show us that the proposed method out-performs the general LDPC channel coding methods in terms of SNR vs BER measurements.

In this paper, the bit error ratio(BER) performance of multi-carrier CDMA system in multi-user/multi-path environment is analytically derived, and effect of interferences due to multi-user, multi-carrier, multi-path is analyzed. A multi-carrier/multi-user/multi-path joint detection scheme incorporating a decorrelating detector is proposed, and its performance as well as the enhancement of noise due to decorrelating process are analyzed. BER of the proposed joint detection scheme is only slightly degraded compared to the ideal case of single user environment.

In mobile channel environments, the effect of the multi-path fading reduces the performance of the mobile communication severely. Previous studies on the effect of the multi-path fading show that, only the channel between fixed base stations and mobile terminals are considered. However, the future mobile communication service such as telematics may use the communication between moving mobile terminals, so called mobile ad-hoc communication, the studies on the channel is required for such situations. In this paper we have measured the mobile channel and analyzed the fading characteristics when using the linear array antennas. In the data measurements, we sent the QPSK modulated signal with carrier frequency of 2GHz band and received the signal using the array antennas equipped on moving vehicles. We have analyzed the fading characteristics and the effects of the fading reduction using the CDF of fading depth using data collected from two moving vehicles. The simulation results show that the beamforming technique adds 6 or 7dB to the fading margin than that of the selection diversity depending on channel environments.

In this paper, error performance of DS/FH CDMA system has been analyzed in a radio channel which is characterized by near-far problem and multi-path fading. The DS/FH CDMA system adopts Maximum Ratio Combining(MRC) diversity and BCH(Bose-Chau dhuri-Hocquenghem) coding techniques to enhance system performance. Using the derived error probability equation, the error performance of DS/FH CDMA system has been evaluated and shown in figures to discuss as a function of PN code length(N), hopping rate(q), number of diversity branch(M), coding rate($\gamma$) and bit energy per noise power ratio ${E_b/N_o}$. The results show that DS/FH system is more effective to restrain the affection of near-far problem and multi-path fading than DS system. And there is a substantial enhancement in performance by employing an MRC diversity or BCH coding techniques. Consequently, we expected that proposed system structure is reliable to the voice communication system in near-far problem and multi-path fading channel.

In this paper, a new technique is proposed for obtaining the error probabilities of the VSB(vestigial sideband modulation) signal in the presence of the cochannel interference and frequency-selective fading channel. For the receivers, a suboptimal matched filter receiver and the MLSE(maximum likelihood sequence estimation) receiver, which is known to be optimal on the fading channel, are considered. First, for the matched filter receiver, the distributions of the random variables, which determine the SER(symbol error rate) are obtained by decomposing the multi-path fading channel into Rayleigh distributed main path and Gaussian distributed remained path channels. the random variables mean the energy of the main path and subpath respecitively, and SER can be calculated from the distribution of them. Next, for the case of the MLSE receover, it is found that the random variables are expressed as a function of integrals. In order to obtain the distribution for the random variables, we expanded each element of integrals with the KL(Karhunen-Loeve) transformation. And it is derived that the distributions for the transformed random variables are given by a sum of chi-square distributions. Finally, we calculated the error rate derived formula on the two-ray fading channel, which is one of widely used models for the frequency-selective fading channel. From the numerical results, it is found that for the matched filer receiver, performance degradation is significant, while the performance degradation at the MLSE receiver is insignificant on the frequency-selective fading channel. However, in case of cochannel interference environment, the error rateis found to increase significantly both at the matched filter and at the MLSE receiver.
In this paper, we present performance analysis of an IEEE P802.15.3a high rate wireless personal area network transceiver. This physical layer standard uses QOSK as its sub-channel modulation scheme and orthogonal frequency domain modulation (OFDM) for sub-bands. OFDM is used for each sub-band so that multi-path effects are absorbed by equalizer and guard, and fading can be approximately modeled as additive white Gaussian noise. In multi-band ultra-wideband system, DAC quantization error is important noise source since high resolution conversion cannot be used due to high power consumption. Simulation result shows that, to get 640-Mbps throughput, at least 5-bits precision is necessary to maintain bit-error rate under 10$\^$-2/, which can be lowered, with channel coding, to 10$\^$-6/ that is the bit-error rate required by IEEE 802.15 upper protocol layer, in 4-meter LOS fading channel.

This paper presents the improvement of BER performance using fading compensation method for 16 QAM-TCM to reduce the effects of multi-path fading in mobile radio environments. We propose the multi-pilot symbol aided fading compensation technique using Gausian interpolation method for inter-symbol interference or fading distortion occured in frequency selective fading channel. The proposed system is combined coding and modulation scheme for improving the reliability of a digital transmission system without increasing the transmitted power or the required bandwidth. In the fading compensation, the pilot symbols from a known sequence is multiplexed into the data symbols at regular intervals to from a frames for transmission. And we use a modified bit reversal block interleaver to randomize burst errors. The results show that significant improvements in the bit-error rate performances can be achieved by the proposed techniques.

Signal distortion due to the path loss, shadow, and multi-path fading is very serious in radio channel. In this paper, we propose CDMA-OFDM cooperative communication system based on DFP(Decode and Forward Protocol) to overcome these phenomena using spread spectrum technique, orthogonal sub-carrier, and the space diversity. We simulated proposed system under Rayleigh flat fading channel environment. A variety of simulation results reveal the cooperation can provide performance gain of up to 12 dB over direct communications in ideal inter-user case at BER of $10^{-3}$. And we can also confirm variation of diversity effect as channel environment changes.

In this paper, it is shown that B-CDMA systems inherently reduce the effects of Multi Path fading phenomena which causes to degrade the performance of mobile communication systems. B-COMA systems use PN codes of high chip rates ( > 10 Mbps) and evaluate autocorrelation with the same code in the receiver. Therefore, it is possible that multipath signals, whose delay time is longer than one chip duration compared to the first signal, are removed. We model the wideband fading channel as a suitable linear filter, and perform computer simulation of signal transmission and reception. Graphic comparison of eye diagrams between the narrowband and wideband systems is shown.
