  • This paper describes a topology optimization technique which can maximize the fundamental frequency of the structures. The fundamental frequency maximization is achieved by means of the minimization of modal strain energy as an inverse problem so that the strain energy based resizing algorithm is directly used in this study. The strain energy to be minimized is therefore employed as the objective function and the initial volume of structures is used as the constraint function. Multi-frequency problem is considered by the introduction of the weight which is used to combine several target modal strain energy terms into one scalar objective function. Several numerical examples are presented to investigate the performance of the proposed topology optimization technique. From numerical tests, it is found to be that the proposed optimization technique is extremely effective to maximize the fundamental frequency of structure and can successfully consider the multi-frequency problems in the topology optimization process.

  • In frequency domain ICA, the frequency bin permutation problem falls off the quality of separated signals. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to solve the frequency bin permutation problem using the covariance of power ratio of separated signals in multi-channel FD-ICA. It makes use of the continuity of the spectrum of speech signals to check if frequency bin permutation occurs in the separated signal using the power ratio of adjacent frequency bins. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method could fix the frequency bin permutation problem in the multi-channel FD-ICA.

  • In order to measure the segmental impedance of the body, a bioelectrical impedance measurement system (BIMS) using multi-frequency applying method and two-electrode method was implemented in this study. The BIMS was composed of constant current source, automatic gain control, and multi-frequency generation units. Three experiments were performed using the BIMS and a commercial impedance analyzer (CIA). First, in order to evaluate the performance of the BIMS, four RC circuits connected with a resistor and capacitor in serial and/or parallel were composed. Bioelectrical impedance (BI) was measured by applying multi-frequencies -5, 10, 50, 100, 150, 200, 300, 400, and 500 KHz - to each circuit. BI values measured by the BIMS were in good agreement with those obtained by the CIA for four RC circuits. Second, after measuring BI at each frequency by applying multi-frequency to the left and right forearm and the popliteal region of the body, BI values measured by the BIMS were compared to those acquired by the CIA. Third, when the distance between electrodes was changed to 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 cm, BI by the BIMS was also compared to BI from the CIA. In addition, BI of extracellular fluid (ECF) was measured at each frequency ranging from 10 to 500 KHz. BI of intracellular fluid (ICF) was calculated by subtracting BI of ECF measured at 500 kHZ from BI measured at seven frequencies ranging from 50 to 500 KHz. BI of ICF and ECF decreased as the frequency increased. BI of ICF sharply decreased at frequencies above 300 KHz.

  • Free vibration analysis of radialiy multi-delaminated beams with through-the-width multi-delamination is performed in the present study. The multiple delaminations are considered to be in a radial manner through the thickness from the top surface of the beam. The natural frequencies of the radially multi-delaminated beams are calculated from a new algorithm that is based on the single compound delaminated beam model. That is, beams with radial multi-delaminations are regarded as the sum of a single compound delamlnated beam that is the single sub-delaminated beam from the top surface of global beam. Each result of frequency equation for the single delaminated beam with unknown boundary conditions obtained through continuity conditions Is updated to the next one, With these sequential operations, the final frequency equation of radially multi-delaminated beams is obtained for both ends boundary conditions of global beam. The numerical results carried out for the beams are compared with those of some references to give the reliance on the proposed algorithm and to investigate the effects of the shape, number, size of multi-delaminations on the natural frequency. Compared with the other previously presented model, the proposed algorithm is more flexible in modeling and formulating as the total array size of frequency equation is always four by four. Therefore, the proposed algorithm will reduce the effort of user in formulating the physical model to the numerical model.

  • Following a surge of interest in multi-unit risk in the last few years, many recent studies have suggested methods for multi-unit probabilistic safety assessment (MUPSA) and addressed several related aspects. Most of the existing studies though focused on two-unit nuclear power plant (NPP) sites or used rather simplified probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) models to demonstrate the proposed approaches. When considering an NPP site with three or more units, some approaches are inapplicable or yield very conservative results. Since the number of such sites is increasing, there is a strong need to develop and validate practical approaches to the related MUPSA. This article provides several detailed approaches that are applicable to multi-unit Level 1 PSA for sites with up to six or more reactor units. To validate the approaches, a multi-unit Level 1 PSA model is developed and the site core damage frequency is estimated for each of four representative multi-unit initiators, as well as for the case of a simultaneous occurrence of independent single-unit initiators in multiple units. For this purpose, an NPP site with six identical OPR-1000 units is considered, with full-scale Level 1 PSA models for a specific OPR-1000 plant used as the base single-unit models.

  • A low-cost, large area, random, maskless texturing scheme independent of crystal orientation is expected to significantly impact terrestrial photovoltaic technology. We investigated silicon surface microstructures formed by reactive ion etching (RIE) in Multi-Hollow cathode system. Desirable texturing effect has been achieved when radio-frequency (rf) power of about 20 Watt per one hollow cathode glow is applied for our RF Multi-Hollow cathode system. The black silicon etched surface shows almost zero reflectance in the visible region as well as in near IR region. The etched silicon surface is covered by columnar microstructures with diameters from 50 to 100 nm and depth of about 500 nm. We have successfully achieved 11.7% efficiency of mono-crystalline silicon solar cell and 10.2% multi-crystalline silicon solar cell.

  • In an OFDMA system the performance of multi-user scheduling in the frequency domain is affected by the frequency selectivity of the channel. If the channel is too flat in the frequency domain, the multi-user scheduling gain might be degraded. On the contrary, if the frequency selectivity is too high and the magnitude of the frequency response severely fluctuates on the allocation bandwidth, it is also hard to get sufficient scheduling gain. For maximizing the multi-user scheduling gain, a cyclic delay diversity technique can be used to adjust the frequency selectivity of the channel. This paper proposes a method to determine the optimal delay value of cyclic delay diversity according to the allocation bandwidth and the channel characteristics.

  • The UFMC(Universal Filtered Multi-Carrier) is one of multi-carrier transmission technique as a candidate of transmission method for the recent 5G communication system. The UFMC can be considered as the system which has both the advantages of OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) and the simplicity of FBMC(Filter Bank Multi-Carrier). CFO(Carrier Frequency Offset) causes the problem to lower the BER performance due to a mismatch between the sub-carriers in multi-carrier transmission scheme. The effect of CFO on UFMC is not greater than the OFDM. But it still degrades the system performance caused by interference between the sub-band. In this paper, we analyze the SNR degradation due to changes in the value of EsNo and CFO on UFMC system.

  • Current source inverter drives of auto sequentially commutated type are very popular in high power applications, because of simple power circuit configuration with four quadrant operation. But the six-step current output create harmonic problems and the input power factor of such a drive is not always good. In this respect pulse width modulated drives using gate turn off thyristors ( GTO ) are finding application, especially in traction drives. However the switching and snubber loses of a GTO do not permit the inverter switching frequency go beyond a few hundred hertz. This will again introduce low frequency harmonic problems. Multi level inverters of the 3-level and 5-level can be considered as an alternative to overcome the low switching frequency harmonic problem of the 2-level GTO inverters. But with multi level inverters the complexity of the power circuit increases. In this paper a combination of multi level ( 2-level and 3-level ) inverters and multi phase induction motor ( 3-phase and 6-phase) configurations are presented for high power VSI drives for traction applications with reduced inverter switching frequency requirements coupled with reduced voltage rating for the power switch.
