  • Reducing the environmental impact in the construction industry is essential for a sustainable future, and life cycle assessment (LCA) should be effectively conducted to reduce the environmental impact. The construction industry is one of the fields that emits a large amount of Greenhouse Gas (GHG). It is also characterized by many material inputs and a one-off single production. Therefore, it took a lot of effort to evaluate all the input materials, and it was difficult to implement a detailed LCA. There is need to solve these problems and to establish a fair and reliable evaluation method. In order to solve this problem, it is proposed to establish a common rule for calculating environmental loads of buildings, such as carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, by effectively utilizing the Inventory Database for Environmental Analysis (IDEA) database, which is an inventory database developed in Japan. It can evaluate not only carbon dioxide but also various environmental substances, and analyze how the environmental impact is correlated with each building and its constituent materials. Furthermore, by analyzing the actual buildings of 83 projects, the differences in the tendency of building type and materiall was clarified. A database was constructed to help reduce the environmental impact during the early stages of construction project and for different types of buildings.

  • The existing design materials by document type are restricted in searching and acquiring necessary design information because the materials consist of huge information and various document types. This study suggests a methodology to develop an electronic technical manual that can manage construction design materials by XML-base integrated information system. Electronic technical manual for design materials can provide visualized information through various multimedia tools such as multi-link, virtual reality and animation. Using an integrated electronic manual for construction project can prevent to miss necessary design information. The results of this study includes a data flow diagram to develop an interactive electronic technical manual (IETM) for construction design information. Finally the study suggests some scenarios for practical use and quantitative analysis of application effect analysis by AHP method.

  • The OGS model is configured and used for simulation of the LASGIT project. The modeling conditions and the simulation results from the previous work by Walsh and Calder (2009) are analyzed to see if the simulation configuration is done correctly and to apply for the LASGIT project. Except for the unrealistic modeling conditions used previously, the simulation results successfully demonstrated helium propagation that is typical for the two-phase flow. The results indicated that the relations of capillary pressure and the relative permeability against water saturation used previously should be updated. An elaborated simulation with more realistic parameters should be used to improve the weak points of preliminary work.

  • The purpose of this study is establishing effective multimodal logistics structure in northeast Asia. For this end, the interface between transport modes, construction method of rail-ferry transport system, system operation and implementation strategies by step were studied. Rail-ferry system have a competition over present transportation system in international cargo trade market between Korea and China. And, the operation of rail-ferry transportation system between Korea and China is meaningful project in the point of providing various choices to clients. Korea and China should have agreements in trade, customs duties, ports in the next year for the success of this project.

  • This paper aims to suggest a validity analysis model that would be helpful for local governments considering u-City construction projects and a methodology for them to promote build-transfer-lease (BTL) u-City projects. This methodology mainly uses quantitative and qualitative analysis based on the Value For Money (VFM) designed by the Public and Private Infrastructure Investment Management Center (PIMAC) under the Korea Development Institute (KDI). BTL projects requires a large amount of capital and involves long-term investments. Therefore, multi-faceted validity analysis is required for the success of a project. This study will enumerate various factors to be considered in the pre-analysis of validity of BTL projects and suggest a methodology to verify them. A case study of a BTL project promoted by Ansan City assisted in designing this study in detail.

  • This research and technology development project is based on the concept and plan of Sumitomo Forestry Co., Ltd., and designed by Nikken Sekkei Ltd., and is aiming to realize 350 m supertall timber-framed buildings in urban areas by 2041, the 350 year anniversary of Sumitomo Forestry's founding(Fig. 1). By constructing office-based multi-use buildings which have 70 stories above ground with GFA of 455,000 ㎡, using a huge amount of timber of 185,000 ㎥, this project envisions to connect forests and cities, and to solve the problems in both of forests and cities. At the present stage, the main objective is to identify the issues related to wood, such as building structural systems, construction methods, materials used, and resource development, and to create a roadmap for future technologies to be researched and developed.

  • The number of clinics for Oriental Clinic is increasing sharply in Korea after the inception of National Health Insurance System in 1987. However there have been many troubles in making efficient plans for oriental clinic facilities because of the lack of proper guidelines related to the design of them. This research was conducted as part of the planning project for the "G" Oriental Clinic. The purpose of this project Is to place a optimal number of beds in a small oriental clinic and medical-environmental friendly design After arranging necessary spaces, such as the Director's Office, Herbal Medicine Preparation Room, Multipurpose Room, Medicine Cabinet, and Waiting Room in the clinic, partitions are used to differentiate the spaces and the storage area.

  • Organizational learning of construction team has been long addressed in the literatures, but the mechanism of learning and the influence of leader in the team still remain vague. This paper presents a computational model (OLT) depicting the mechanism and the influence of leader in a systemic way. The OLT model is a multi-agent system based on some eloquent propositions proposed in previous researches. The proposed model is preliminarily validated by some toy-problem simulations. In the OLT model, the leader is assigned as a project manager. The results show that a proper leader can effectively improve the learning process and the result-in performance, in which the team learning is mainly affected by both the leader and the majority in a team. Based on our findings, two propositions are concluded accordingly: (1) Learning of a team would be enhanced if a proper leader is assigned; (2) The effectiveness of learning would increase in a team, in which the members retain explorative attitudes.

  • A subcontract work order is the basis of the construction process and consists of the root and trunk of the construction industry. The construction process through a subcontract work order is an important element of project success, and it is the basic unit of creating profit in the construction industry. Therefore, correct analysis and forecasting of subcontract work orders allow correct estimation of construction cost and profit which is the foundation of corporate decision making. This study has started to provide predictions of subcontractor's bidding-ratio for decision-making. Since the actual project data has been used in this study, the contribution level of the model is highly expected in actual field. The statistical confidential level of adjusted decision coefficient is concluded low because of limited sample numbers. However, its accuracy and confidence level can be increased through increasing sample numbers, considering more variables, and studying of reducing error.

  • We present optical variability of nearby luminous active galactic nucleus (AGN). We use the multi-epoch data of 46 AGNs obtained from 2015 to 2019 through SNU AGN Monitoring Project (SAMP), which was carried out for the reverberation mapping of luminous AGNs. We estimated variability amplitudes and time scales using the various types of analytic function, such as structure function and damped random work. We present the comparisons between physical properties of AGNs and optical variability in order to unveil the origin of the variability of AGNs.
