  • In multiple antenna systems, vertical Bell Labs Layered Space-Time (V-BLAST) systems enable very high throughput by nulling and cancelling at each layer detection. In this paper, we propose a V-BLAST system which combines with signal space diversity technique. The benefit of the signal space diversity is that we can obtain an additional gain without extra bandwidth and power expansion by applying inphase/quadrature interleaving and the constellation rotation. Through simulation results, it is shown that the performance of the proposed system is less than 0.5dB away from the ideal upper bound.

  • This paper presents a robust centralized control scheme for a magnetic bearing system which supports a rigid rotor at both shaft ends in the radial direction. The negative stiffness element and the inductive force associated with bearing magnetic field are considered in the dynamic model of the system. For this model, the controllability and observability are examined, and then a robust control theory is applied to design two types of multi-input multi-output servocontrollers. A general servocompensator is embedded in the first one and a centralized PID controller is suggested as a second one. By simulation study, the performance of two types of servocontrollers are compared in the aspects of disturbance rejection, reference tracking and the robustness limit.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient and robust interference mitigation technique based on a nullsteering multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) spatial division multiple access (SDMA) scheme for frequency sharing between IMT-advanced and fixed satellite service (FSS) in the 3400-4200 and 4500-4800 MHz bands. In the proposed scheme, the pre-existing precoding matrix for SDMA unitary precoded (UPC) MIMO proposed by the authors is modified to construct nulls in the spatial spectrum corresponding to the direction angles of the victim FSS earth station (ES). Furthermore, a numerical formula to calculate the power of the interference signal received at the FSS ES when IMT-Advanced base stations (BS) are operated with the interference mitigation technique is presented. This formula can be derived in closed form and is simply implemented with the help of simulation, resulting in significantly reduced time to obtain the solution. Finally, the frequency sharing results are analyzed in the co-channel and adjacent channel with respect to minimum separation distance and direction of FSS earth station (DOE). Simulation results indicate that the proposed mitigation scheme is highly efficient in terms of reducing the separation distance as well as robust against DOE estimation errors.

  • Multiple LED arrays can be utilized in visible-light communication (VLC) to improve communication efficiency, while maintaining smart illumination functionality through dimming control. This paper proposes a modulation scheme called "Spatial Intensity Modulation" (SIM), where the effective number of turned-on LEDs is employed for data modulation and dimming control in VLC systems. Unlike the conventional pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM), symbol intensity levels are not determined by the amplitude levels of a VLC signal from each LED, but by counting the number of turned-on LEDs, illuminating with a single amplitude level. Because the intensity of a SIM symbol and the target dimming level are determined solely in the spatial domain, the problems of conventional PAM-based VLC and related MIMO VLC schemes, such as unstable dimming control, non uniform illumination functionality, and burdens of channel prediction, can be solved. By varying the number and formation of turned-on LEDs around the target dimming level in time, the proposed SIM scheme guarantees homogeneous illumination over a target area. An analysis of the dimming capacity, which is the achievable communication rate under the target dimming level in VLC, is provided by deriving the turn-on probability to maximize the entropy of the SIM-based VLC system. In addition, a practical design of dimmable SIM scheme applying the multilevel inverse source coding (MISC) method is proposed. The simulation results under a range of parameters provide baseline data to verify the performance of the proposed dimmable SIM scheme and applications in real systems.

  • In this work, first, a multiuser detection (MUD) algorithm based on component-level soft interference cancellation and linear minimum mean square error (CLSIC-LMMSE) is proposed, which can enhance the bit error ratio (BER) performance of the traditional SIC-LMMSE-based MUD by mitigating error propagation. Second, for non-binary low density parity check (NB-LDPC) coded high-order modulation systems, when the proposed algorithm is integrated with partial mapping, the receiver with iterative detection and decoding (IDD) achieves not only better BER performance but also significantly computational complexity reduction over the traditional SIC-LMMSE-based IDD scheme. Extrinsic information transfer chart (EXIT) analysis and numerical simulations are both used to support the conclusions.

  • This paper provides a unified framework for the joint optimal subchannel and power allocation in multi-hop relay network, where each node in the network has multiple parallel subchannels such as in OFDM or MIMO system. When there are multiple parallel subchannels between nodes, the relay node decides how to match the subchannel at the first hop with the one at the second hop aside from determining the power allocation. Joint optimal design of subchannel matching and power allocation is, in general, known to be very difficult to solve due to the combinatorial nature involved in subchannel matching. Despite this difficulty, we use a simple rearrangement inequality and show that seemingly difficult problems can be efficiently solved. This includes several existing solution methods as special cases. We also provide various design examples to show the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

  • Under the maximum transmit power constraint and the minimum rate constraint, we propose the optimal number of transmit antennas and transmit power which maximize energy-efficiency (EE) in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink system with the maximal ratio transmission (MRT) precoding. Because the optimization problem for the instantaneous channel is difficult to solve, we use independence of individual channel, average channel gain and path loss to approximate the objective function. Since the approximated EE optimization problem is two-dimensional search problem, we find the optimal number of transmit antennas and transmit power using Lagrange multipliers and our proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that the number of transmit antennas and power obtained by proposed algorithm are almost identical to the value by the exhaustive search.

  • Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV)'s berthing and unberthing is the most difficult maneuvering tasks and have the highest risk of accidents. In this paper, we designed a berthing/unberthing control algorithm given human joystick command for an USV equipped with a waterjet and a bow thruster. The berthing and unberthing maneuvers are performed remotely by a joystick operator at the Ground Control Center (GCC) where the status of USV and environmental situation can be monitored. We interpret the human joystick commands into USV's desired speed, yaw rate, and heading angle commands. next, we developed a control algorithm for the desired target values of MIMO actuators (engine speed, bucket step, nozzle angle, and bow thruster state) to follow the interpreted commands. The validity of the control algorithm is confirmed through simulations and sea trials at Gwang Am port.

  • In this paper, an antenna selection scheme is proposed in massive multi-user multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) systems. The proposed antenna selection scheme can achieve almost the same performance as a conventional scheme while significantly reducing the overhead of feedback by using deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Each user compares the channel gains of massive antennas in base station (BS) to the L-largest channel gain, converts them to one-bit binary numbers, and feed them back to BS. Thus, the feedback overhead can be significantly reduced. In the proposed scheme, DRL is adopted to prevent the performance loss that might be caused by the reduced feedback information. We carried out extensive Monte-Carlo simulations to analyze the performance of the proposed scheme and it was shown that the proposed scheme can achieve almost the same average sum-rates as a conventional scheme that is almost optimal.

  • This study using the active vibration control technique attempts to alleviate numerically the airframe vibration of a UH-60A helicopter. The AVCS(Active Vibration Control System) is applied to reduce the 4/rev vibration responses at the specified locations of the UH-60A airframe. The 4/rev hub vibratory loads of the UH-60A rotor is predicted using the nonlinear flexible dynamics analysis code, DYMORE II. Various tools such as NDARC, MSC.NASTRAN, and MATLAB Simulink are used for the AVCS simulation with five CRFGs and seven accelerometers. At a flight speed of 158knots, the predicted 4/rev hub vibratory loads of UH-60A rotor excite the airframe, and then the 4/rev vibration responses at the specified airframe positions such as the pilot seat, rotor-fuselage joint, mid-cabin, and aft-cabin are calculated without and with AVCS. The 4/rev vibration responses at all the locations and directions are reduced by from 25.14 to 96.05% when AVCS is used, as compared to the baseline results without AVCS.
