A Computational Study About Behavior of an Underwater Projectile and Prediction of Surficial Pressure Loading (수중 운동체의 거동 및 표면 압력하중 예측에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • In the present study, two phase flows around a projectile vertically launched from an underwater platform have been numerically investigated by using a three dimensional multi-phase RANS flow solver based on pseudo-compressibility and a homogeneous mixture model on unstructured meshes. The relative motion between the platform and projectile was described by six degrees of freedom(6DOF) equations of motion with Euler angles and a chimera technique. The propulsive power of the projectile was modeled as the fluid force acting on the lower surface of the body by the compressed air emitted from the platform. Qualitative analysis was conducted for the time history of vapor volume fraction distributions. Uncorking pressure around the projectile and platform was analyzed to predict impact force acting on the surfaces. The results of 6DOF analysis presented similar tendency with the surficial pressure distributions.

  • The robot mechanisms that were previously researched had only been conducted for the purpose of overcoming the obstacles stably at low speed driving and enhancing the stability against high speed circuitous driving, and yet, the mechanism satisfying two purposes. However, in order to stably drive with high speed on rough terrain, there is a need for satisfying both of these purposes, as well as testing the efficiency of the mechanisms at high speed driving. There, this paper simulated some of the passive mechanisms and focused on checking the performances of passive mechanisms through simulations and analyzing each mechanism on the basis of an evaluation index. The simulation was conducted by Adams (The Multi-body Dynamics Simulation Solution) and used various types of passive mechanisms which were introduced in the robotics field. As a result, the study confirmed that passive mechanisms have a number of situations that affect the driving stability on each direction of roll and pitch. Further study is needed about active mechanism.

  • The mobility of tracked vehicles is mainly influenced by the interaction between tracks and soil, so that the characteristics of their interactions are quite important fur the tracked vehicle study. In particular, the track tension is closely related to the maneuverability of tracked vehicles and the durability of tracks and suspension systems. In order to minimize the excessive load on the tracks and to prevent the peal-off of tracks from the road-wheels, the Dynamic Track Tensioning System (DTTS) which maintains the optimum track tension throughout the maneuver is required. It consists of track tension monitoring system, track tension controller and hydraulic system. In this paper, a dynamic track tensioning system is developed for tracked vehicles which are subject to various maneuvering tasks. The track tension is estimated based on the idler assembly model. Using the monitored track tension and con sidering the highly nonlinear hydraulic units, fuzzy logic controllers are designed in order to control the track tension. The track tensioning performance of the proposed DTTS is verified through the simulation of the Multi -body Dynamics tool.

Physics-based Diagnostics on Gear Faults Using Transmission Error (전달오차를 이용한 물리기반(Physics-Based) 기어고장진단 이론연구)

  • Transmission error (TE) is defined as "the angular difference between the ideal output shaft position and actual position". As TE is one of the major source of the noise and vibration of gears, it is originally studied with relation of the noise and vibration of the gears. However, recently, with the relation of mesh stiffness, TE has been studied for fault detection of spur gear sets. This paper presents a physics-based theory on fault diagnostics of a planetary gear using transmission error. After constructing the lumped parameter model using DAFUL, multi-body dynamics software, we developed a methodology to diagnose the faults of the planetary gear including phase calculation, signal processing. Using developed methodology, we could conclude that TE could be a good signal for fault diagnostics of a planetary gear.

Influence of non-Gaussian characteristics of wind load on fatigue damage of wind turbine

  • Based on translation models, both Gaussian and non-Gaussian wind fields are generated using spectral representation method for investigating the influence of non-Gaussian characteristics and directivity effect of wind load on fatigue damage of wind turbine. Using the blade aerodynamic model and multi-body dynamics, dynamic responses are calculated. Using linear damage accumulation theory and linear crack propagation theory, crack initiation life and crack propagation life are discussed with consideration of the joint probability density distribution of the wind direction and mean wind speed in detail. The result shows that non-Gaussian characteristics of wind load have less influence on fatigue life of wind turbine in the area with smaller annual mean wind speeds. Whereas, the influence becomes significant with the increase of the annual mean wind speed. When the annual mean wind speeds are 7 m/s and 9 m/s at hub height of 90 m, the crack initiation lives under softening non-Gaussian wind decrease by 10% compared with Gaussian wind fields or at higher hub height. The study indicates that the consideration of the influence of softening non-Gaussian characteristics of wind inflows can significantly decrease the fatigue life, and, if neglected, it can result in non-conservative fatigue life estimates for the areas with higher annual mean wind speeds.

  • An elastomeric bushing is a device used in automotive suspension systems to cushion the force transmitted from the wheel to the frame of the vehicle. A bushing is an elastomeric hollow cylinder which is bonded to a solid metal shaft at its inner surface and a metal sleeve at its outer suface. The relation between the force applied to the shaft or sleeve and their relative deformation is nolinear and exhibits features of viscoelasticity. Numerical solutions of the boundary value problem represent the exact bushing response for use in the method for determining the force relaxation function of the bushing. The new nonlinear viscoelastic bushing model, which is called Pipkin-Rogers model, is proposed and it is shown that the predictions of the proposed force-displacement relation are in very good agreement with the exact results. This new bushing model is thus very suitable for use in multi-body dynamics codes. The success of the present study for axial mode response suggests that the same approach be applied to other modes, such as torsional or radial modes.

Landing Stability Simulation of a 1/6 Lunar Module with Aluminum Honeycomb Dampers

  • The Korea Aerospace Research Institute plans to launch a lunar module by 2025, and so is carrying out a preliminary study. Landing stability on the lunar surface is a key design factor of a lunar module. In this paper, a 1/6 scale model of a lunar module is investigated, for its landing stability on non-level surfaces. The lunar module has four tripod legs, with aluminum honeycomb shock absorbers in each leg strut. ADAMS$^{TM}$, the most widely used multi-body dynamics and motion analysis software, is used to simulate the module's lunar landing. Three types of dampers in the struts (rigid, viscous, and aluminum honeycomb dampers), and two types of lunar surfaces (rigid and elastic) are considered. The Sforce function is adopted, to model the aluminum honeycomb dampers. Details on the modeling and analysis of the landing stability of the 1/6 scale lunar module and the simulation results are provided in this paper.

A Study on the Dynamic Characteristics of the Bi-modal Tram with All-Wheel-Steering System (전차륜 조향 장치를 장착한 굴절궤도 차량의 주행특성에 관한 연구)

  • The bi-modal tram guided by the magnetic guidance system has two car-bodies and three axles. Each axle of the vehicle has an independent suspension to lower the floor of the car and improve ride quality. The turning radius of the vehicle may increase as a consequence of the long wheel base. Therefore, the vehicle is equipped with the All-Wheel-Steering(AWS) system for safe driving on a curved road. Front and rear axles should be steered in opposite directions, which means a negative mode, to minimize the turning radius. On the other hand, they also should be steered in the same direction, which means a positive mode, for the stopping mode. Moreover, only the front axle is steered for stability of the vehicle upon high-speed driving. In summary, steering angles and directions of the each axle should be changed according to the driving environment and steering mode. This paper proposes an appropriate AWS control algorithm for stable driving of the bi-modal tram. Furthermore, a multi-body model of the vehicle is simulated to verify the suitability of the algorithm. This model can also analyze the different dynamic characteristics between 2WS and AWS.

Study on the Available Power of a Wind Turbine for Wind Farm Control (풍력단지 제어를 위한 생산가능 출력에 대한 연구)

  • A study on the available power of a wind turbine to be used for wind farm control was performed in this study, To accurately estimate the available power it is important to obtain a suitable wind which represents the three dimensional wind that the wind turbine rotor faces and also used to calculate the power. For this, two different models, the equivalent wind and the wind speed estimator were constructed and used for dynamic simulation using matlab simulink. From the comparison of the simulation result with that from a commercial code based on multi-body dynamics, it was found that using the hub height wind to estimate available power from a turbine results in high frequency components in the power prediction which is, in reality, filtered out by the rotor inertia. It was also found that the wind speed estimator yielded less error than the equivalent wind when compared with the result from the commercial code.

  • Pedestrians involved in traffic accidents manifest unique trajectory characteristics depending on the collision speed, vehicle configuration, and pedestrian postures. However, the existing analytical models for pedestrian movements do not fully include the rotational characteristics of the pedestrians because they assume a two dimensional parabolic trajectory. This faulty assumption in the development of these models limits their applicability and reliability This study investigated the pedestrians movement at collision by computer simulation. The simulations are carried out by using HADYMO, which is a special simulation software system for dynamic movement analysis. Vehicles and pedestrians are modeled and verified via real crash worthiness experiments. Simulations are performed for various collision speeds, vehicle configuration, and pedestrian postures. Since the simulation uses multi-body dynamics, It can express irregular phenomena of the bodies quite well. The results can be exploited for vehicle design and traffic accident reconstruction.
