Mullite ceramics can be sintered by rf plasma sintering to densities as high as 97% compared to the theoretical density of the mullite, while SiC whisker-reinforced mullite matrix ceramic composites were not sintered by plasma sintering. Decomposition of mullite occurs in a superficial regins at the outside surface of the specimen by volatilization of SiO at elevated temperature by plasma. SiC whiskers were destroyed, and the matrix was converted to alumina from SiC-whisker reinforced mullite matrix ceramic composites during the plasma sintering. Accelerated volatilization from the SiC whisker in the mullite prevents sintering. The volatile species are mainly SiC and CO gas species. The effects of plasma on mullite and SiC-whisker reinforced mullite matrix composites are interpreted by thermodynamic simulation of the volatile species in the plasma environment. The thermodynamic results show that the decomposition will not occur during hot pressing.

Porous mullite-bonded SiC (MBSC) ceramics were fabricated at temperatures ranging from 1400 to $1500^{\circ}C$ for 2 h using silicon carbide (SiC), alumina ($Al_2O_3$), strontium oxide (SrO), and poly (methyl methacrylate-coethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (PMMA) microbeads. The effect of template content on porosity, pore morphology, and flexural strength were investigated. The porosity increased with increasing the template content at the same sintering temperature. The flexural strength showed maximum after sintering at $1450^{\circ}C$/2 h for all specimens due to small pores and dense strut. By controlling the template content and sintering temperature, it was possible to produce porous MBSC ceramics with porosities ranging from 30% to 54%. A maximum flexural strength of ~51MPa was obtained at 30% porosity when no template were used and specimens sintered at $1450^{\circ}C$/2 h.
Additives for low temperature sintering of mullite ceramics were investigated for matching Mo-Cu conducting paste with that ceramics at 1,400$^{\circ}C$. $SiO_2$, MgO and $Y_2O_3$ were chosen as the additives for low temperature sintering, and the amounts of those additives were varied with sintering temperature of 1,400$^{\circ}C$ to 1,500$^{\circ}C$. With additives of 1.0 wt% of $SiO_2$, 1.0 wt% of MgO, and 1.5 wt% of $Y_2O_3$, the densest sintered body of 3.12 g/$cm^3$ was obtained at 1,400$^{\circ}C$ in reducing atmosphere. The flexural strength of that was 325 MPa and the CTE (Coefficient of thermal expansion) was 4.33 ppm/$^{\circ}C$.
The SiC-porcelain powder mixtures containing 51.9wt% SiC are produced as by-products from the surface abrasion process of porcelain cores. This raw powders were used as starting materials for the synthesis of SiC containing ceramics. The specimen, which was fired at 135$0^{\circ}C$ from raw powders, had SiC, $Al_{2}O_{3}$, , cristobalite, mullite as crystalline phases, and the fractured microstructure showed dispersed SiC crystalline particles almost wetted with glassy matrix and spherical pores. Although the oxidation of SiC containing powder compacts wetted with glassy matrix and spherical pores. Although the oxidation of SiC containing powder compacts started at the range of 600~80$0^{\circ}C$ form the analysis of weight gain, the presence of $SiO_{2}$ crystallien phase and cristobalite was confirmed at 100$0^{\circ}C$ by XRD analysis. Mullitization of specimens was accelerated by preheating before the final firing. The specimen sintered at 135$0^{\circ}C$ after 100$0^{\circ}C$ preheating consisted of SiC, cristobalite, mullite as crystalline phases, and revealed 2.24g/$cm^{3}$ bulk density, 11.73% water adsorption, porous microstructure with small amount of glassy phase. SiC contents of specimens, which was 51.9 wt% in the raw powders, reduced to 37~22 wt% after firing at 135$0^{\circ}C$ depending on the preheating condition.
Porous composite of $Al_2O_3$ and AIN based mullite and SiC can be prepared by alumium reaction synthesis and atmosphere controllied sintering in order to improve the durability of a gas filter body. The porous $Al_2O_3$-AIN-mullite, which has a strength of 168 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and porosity of 51.59%, could be obtained by stmospheric firing at $1600^{\circ}C$ and the porous $Al_2O_3$-AIN-SiC with a porosity of 33% and strength of 977 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, could also be prepared. The average pore size has been changed from 0.2$\mu\textrm{m}$ in a reduction atmosphere and to 2$\mu\textrm{m}$ in an air atmosphere, respectively.
The machinability of materials is an important factor in engineering applications. Many ceramic components that have complex shapes require machining, typically using diamond tools, which leads to high production cost. Machinable ceramics containing h-BN have recently been developed, but these materials are very expensive because of high cost of raw materials and machining. Therefore the development of low-cost machinable ceramics is desirable. In this study, mullite-$ZrO_2$ ceramics were prepared additions of $Al_2TiO_5$. $ZrSiO_4$, $Al_2O_3$, and $Al_2TiO_5$ powders mixed at various molar ratios with sintering at 1400, 1500, and $1600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. Phase formation and microstructure of the sintered ceramics were observed by XRD and SEM, respectively. The machinability of each specimen was tested using the micro-hole machining method. The machinability results show that the ceramics sintered at temperatures over $1500^{\circ}C$ can be used as good low-cost machinable mullite-$ZrO_2-Al_2TiO_5$ ceramics.

Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) are used to protect SiC-based ceramics or composites from oxidation and corrosion due to reaction with oxygen and water vapour at high temperatures above $1000^{\circ}C$. Mullite ceramics have been studied for environmental barrier coatings for Si-based ceramics. More recently, rare earth silicate ceramics have been identified as more water vapour-resistant materials than mullite for environmental barrier coatings. In this study, we fabricate mullite and yttrium silicate ceramics by an atmospheric plasma spray coating method using spherical granules fabricated by spray drying. As a result, EBCs with thicknesses in the range of $200-300{\mu}m$ are successfully fabricated without any macroscopic cracks or interfacial delamination. Phase and microstructure analysis are conducted, and the basic mechanical properties, such as hardness and indentation load-displacement curves are evaluated.

The recycling of the Si/SiC mixture sludge obtained from solar cell industry is very significant, environmentally and economically. The sintering characteristics of Si/SiC mixture sludge was studied for the purpose of recycling. In this study, to understand sintering behavior, SiC content in the Si/SiC mixture was controlled using an air separator. Various Si/SiC mixtures having different SiC contents were sintered using carbon black, clay and aluminum hydroxide as sintering aids. Physical properties of Si/SiC mixture and sintered bodies have been characterized using SEM, XRD, particle size analyzer and apparent density measurement. SEM and particle size analysis result confirmed that the fine particles less than 1 ${\mu}m$ decreased or removed more effectively through the air separator in the case of 95% SiC sample compared than the case of 75% SiC sample or original SiC sample. Further, with addition of the Aluminum Hydroxide, ${\beta}$-cristobalite phase gradually decreased while mullite phase gradually increased. The addition of the carbon black improved the sintering characteristics.
In this paper the manufacture of shrinkage-free in situ Mullite-ZrO$_2$ceramics through the addition of Al base metal powder to the mixture of ZrSiO$_4$and A1$_2$O$_3$was attempt. The ZrO$_2$-strengthened mullite ceramics was prepared after the following reaction form, 3(Al+Al$_2$O$_3$)+2ZrSiO$_4$longrightarrow3A1$_2$O$_3$.2SiO$_2$+2ZrO$_2$Al metal powder was added from none to 30 weight percent to the A1$_2$O$_3$. The powders were mechanically mixed, isostatically pressed and reaction sintered at 1450-1$600^{\circ}C$ for 3hours. The specimens were sintered with and without intrim soaking time for 5 hours at 125$0^{\circ}C$ for the oxidation of Al-powder The addition of aluminium accelerates the reaction and compensate the shrinkage during the sintering through an increase in volume of oxidized Al. Because coarse flake type Al metal powders were not effectively milled, oxidized Al resulted in the relative large pore in the specimen.
