The cytotoxicity of the ethanol extracts of varietal samples of mulberry leaves and branches and silkworm feces was measured using CT-26 cells originated from murine metastatic colon cancer, using dye uptake assay in order to find potential anticancer agents. Two ethanol extracts (varietal mulberry leaves and mulberry branches) were prepared from 16 varietal mulberries and used as partial extract materials for the activity assay. Among these, the ethanol extracts from Shinkwangppong leaves showed a little anticancer activity, and those from Sugaeppong, Cheongunppong and Gumsulppong branches showed some anticancer activity as well as cytotoxicity. In contrast, ethanol extracts from freeze-dried, the 3rd day of 5th instar feces showed more potent anticancer activity than that of other mulberry leaves, mulberry branches and other 5th silkworm instar larva feces on the basis of high UV absorbance at 665 nm.
This work was carried out to investigate how the effects on the growth af branches and the yield of mulberry leaves are shown, when two of each dwarf and normal branches are thinned out in sumner or early autumn. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1) In mulberry trees after spring pruning: in case of thin out branches in summer and harvest in autumn (42 days after treatment), (1) The average length of branches in thin out trees showed 19% increase by autumn, which turned out to be 11% higher than that of non-thin out did (8%) (2) The thin out treated mulberry trees presented 9% increase in total yields of summer and autumn, when compared with those of the non-thin out trees. 2) In mulberry trees after sumner pruning: in case of thin out branches in early autumn and harvest either in autumn (15 days after treatment) or in late autumn (28 days after treatment), (1) The average length of branches showed about 6∼7% and 8%, intercase by autumn and late autumn, respectively. Thus no effects of thin out treatment could be recognized in growing of branches. (2) The thin out treated mulberry trees presented about 6% increase in total yields of early autumn, showing no significance through, when compared with those of ron-thin out treatment. Whereas the total yields of early autumn and late autumn showed 12% increase with significance at the level of 5% by thin out treatment. (3) As above mentioned, the thin out of mulberry branches brought about a good effect on yields of mulberry leaves, though less on average length of branches. It may be considered that the thin out treatment makes improve the living condition in mulberry trees and in turn induces photosynthesis actively, which results in increase the weight of leaves.
Mulberry leaves contain many natural components and are considerable resource for natural antiokidants. The antioxidant effect of 'Cheongilppong' collected from Chuncheon, Suwon and Wanju regions were investigated with minilum L-100 device and ARAW-KIT (anti-radical ability of water-soluble substance), in comparison to the ascorbic acid. The measurement parts were mulberry leaves collected from different areas and some kinds of mulberry branches. We obtained that even if samples were same variety, antioxidant capacity of those showed different results according to collected regions. Also, antioxidant effect of mulberry leaves were higher than that of branches. The order of antioxidant effect in Spring was Chuncheon > Suwon > Wanju. The antioxidant effect of mulberry leaves collected from Chuncheon, Suwon and Wanju regions of just before the coloration stage with anthocyanin in fruits were 3627.5 nmol, 2620.0 nmol 1360.7 nmol (ascorbic acid equivalents), respectively. In Autumn, the antioxidant effect and hardness quality of mulberry leaves were increased gradually until just before fallen leaves stage. Therefore, we concluded that being the most suitable period for collecting mulberry leaves as a antiokidant resource is from the latter part of May to the first ten days of June.
This work was carried out to investigate the effects of several mode of picking leaves in autumn on development and harvest of branches, The results obtained are summarized : (1) The effects of picking leaves in autumn were more conspicuous in weight of branches in length and/or size of branches. (2) In inverse propotion to the amount of picking leaves in autumn, the total weights of branches showed heavy in the non-picking leaves, the lower half part and the middle part-treatment, whereas are light in the upper half- and the all leaves picking-treatment, In spite of excessive picking leaves in autumn however, the middle part-treatment presented heavy weight of branches. (3) The yield of leaves in spring silkworm rearing, in propotion to the amount of picking leaves, were heavy in order of the non-picking leaves-, the middle part, and the lower half part-treatment, while both the upper half and the all leaves picking-treatment showed small amount of harvest. (4) The total yield of mulberry leaves and shoots of middle part-treatment, which showed the largest number of all was larger than that of the non-picking leaves and the all leave picking-treatment (leaving 5 leaves from upper part of shoot) at the ratio of 36% and 13%, respectively.
Studies on the harvest methods for the branch-rearing in autumn are as follows. (1) It turned out to be the best method in the early autumn to thin one to two of the normal branches or the dwarf ones, or pick off some of leaves for the yields, according to the rearing scale. (2) For the rearing of the silkworm larvae at 4th instar, it is recommendable to apply one of the following harvest methods, such as the thinning of dwarf branches, the thinning of some branches, intermediate cutting, and the pick-of of the leaves at low part of mulberry in the regards io the quality of leaves and the labour conditions, and no effects on the harvest. (3) For the rearing of the larvae at 5th instar, it is most practical to adapt one of the yield methods which can produce good harvest with less labours. That is, the pruning. of the middle branches should be gradually made from a part of the mulberry fold. (4) When it is carried out to pick of the leaves on the branches which was left after the middle-pruning harvest in autumn or late, easy and less labours' harvest method of rough picking may be applied in the both of the mulberry pruned in summer or autumn.
An autotetraploid, Sawonppong 28 was derived from a thick-leaf and highly productive mulberry variety, Huyeoprok, by colchicine solution treatment on growing point and its characteristics were as follows. The number of somatic chromosomes of the derived variety was 2n=56 of an autotetraploid and green tip sprouting stage was medium budding variety with triangular oval shape and thick leaves contained rich chlorophyll. The length of branches was comparatively short and the number of branches was also small. However the branches were thick and non-budding length percentage at basal part of branch was high and cold hardiness was weak.

Mulberry exhibits unique characteristics and functionalities across various components, including the roots, branches, leaves, and fruits. However, despite numerous studies on mulberry, research on this plant at the seedling stage is insufficient. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the suitability for seedling cultivation and antioxidant effects of four Korean mulberry cultivars, namely, Daesim, Suhong, Simgang, and Cheongsu. In terms of seed weight, germination rate, and growth rate, Daesim was the most suitable cultivar for seedling production. Polyphenol and flavonoid content analysis showed that all cultivars, except for Cheongsu, showed the highest phenolic content at the 2-week seedling stage. Similarly, antioxidant assays using 2,2'-azino-di-3-ethylbenzthiazoline sulfonic acid (ABTS) and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals revealed that the antioxidant effect of all cultivars, except for Cheongsu, increased with cultivation at 2- 4- and 6-week. However, mulberry seedlings had a slower reaction rate against DPPH radical removal than mulberry leaves. In addition, ABTS radical scavenging activity showed a different correlation with polyphenol content. This phenomenon may be due to the different polyphenol compositions between mulberry leaves and seedlings. The results of this study suggest that mulberry seedlings exhibit different bioactivities from mulberry leaves, and component analysis is required in further research.
The study was carried out to examine effect of cadmium spraying on mulberry leaves on the growth and metabolism of mulberry tree. The results obtained were as follow:1. Brown spot were appeared on the leaves as the symptoms of damage and the damage was remarkable with higher concentration of cadmium.2. Higher concentration of Cd inhibited the length and diameter of mulberry branches with a significant difference (P<0.05) for the length. The growth of branch length in both 5 and 7 ppm treatment of Cd was inhibited by 31% compared with the control. 3. Cadimum concentration of mulberry barks was noticeably lower than that of leaves. 4. Cadimum concentration over 3ppm inhibited significantly chlorophyll content, activitsies of respiration, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transase (GPT) and adenocine triphosphate (APT). 5. The lowest concentration of cadmium was identified to be 3ppm to incur the inhibitory effect on the growth and metabolism of mulberry and cadmium content of mulberry leaves at the concentration was 13.86ppm.

Much attention has been focused on the activity of the natural antioxidants present in fruits and vegetables, because potentially these components may reduce the level of oxidative stress. Especially, mulberry leaves containing many natural components are considerable resource for natural antioxidants. The antioxidant capacity of mulberry leaves was investigated with minilum L-100 device and ARAW-KIT (anti-radical ability of water-soluble substance), in comparison to the ascorbic acid. The antioxidant capacity of 16 varieties was 3303.4 nmol at opening stage of five leaves in spring. The highest stage of antioxidant capacity (3708.0 nmol) and yield rate was just before the coloration stage with anthocyanin in fruits, whereas the lowest stage was middle of June (2231.6 nmol) and about two months growing stage after summer pruning (2064.6 nmol). But after summer pruning, the antioxidant capacity of mulberry leaves increased gradually until just before fallen leaves stage. Even if samples were same variety, antioxidant effect of those showed different results according to collected regions. Also, antioxidant effect of mulberry leaves were higher than that of branches. The antioxidant capacity of yield-type mulberry leaves and fruits (Morus alba L., M. bombycis Koidz, and M. Lhou (Ser.) Koidz) collected from In-je, Won-ju and Yang-yang regions, Kang-won province, Korea, was investigated. The results indicated that total antioxidant capacity of yield-type mulberry leaves was 2711.2 nmol. In the antioxidant capacity analysis of Jeollabuk-Do genetic resources, autumn's mulberry leaves showed higher antioxidant capacity than that of spring's it. To investigate the effect of tea on antioxidative capacity, five kinds of tea(coffee mix, green tea added brown rice, mulberry leaf tea, Polygonatum odoratum tea and black tea added lemon) were selected and analyzed. Their's anti-oxidative capacity were 2,531.01 nmol, 1,867.42 nmol, 1,053.72 nmol, 292.71 nmol and 188.91 nmol, respectively. The antioxidative capacity of drinking water soaked with mulberry leaf showed 891.96 nmol.
The aim of this work was to investigate how the mulberry shoots grew well when the mulberry branches were cut down, in hight, 1/3, $\frac{1}{2}$ and 2/3 of them, respectively, just before the Spring budding. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The rate of un-sprouted buds decreased sharply down as much as half of the control if the mulberry branches were cut off. The treatment, 1/3, was best one of various cut down sizes and the un-sprouted buds concentrated on the lower parts of the branches. 2. Even though the branches were cut down, at first it seemed flat to accelerate the sprouting of buds, but rather to have a tendency to become late. The speed of leaf growth, however, became faster after the sprouting. It took 7~9 days from the beginning of buddings to the 5th full grown leaf, and.7 days for the shortest one in the treatment, 2/3, when compared with 16 days of the control. 3. If the branches were cut down, the growth of the new sprouts was accelerated. For 45 days (on 5th of May to on 10th of June), therefore. the shoots had grown up to 1.6~2.5 times of the control, 34cm long. The shoots of which the branches were cut down at 2/3 of them were longest (83cm). Furthermore. the speed of shoot growth of cut-down branches was faster than that of the control. 4. In the increased rate of the number of the mulberry leaves, there was not significant difference between the control and the treatments. 5. The total amount of shoot growth showed considerably much more in the treatments than in the control. The successing growing shoots of treatment, 2/3 were little in a number but longest per one shoot in mean shoot length. 6. It seems to be much available that we may cut down branches at 2/3 of them in order to get the scions for the cutting as soon as possible.
