A Determination of the Salicylate Content of Ingredients Commonly Used in Korean foods Suggested for Allergic Patients

  • Salicylate from plant foods and histamine from animal foods have been suggested to cause various food allergic symptoms. Salicylate regarded as one of the inducing agents f3r chronic urticaria and asthma in allergic patients was studied. There is much interest about the effects of salicylate in food allergy. It it recently suggested that the intake of salicylate from foods may have contributed to chronic urticaria and asthma. The purpose of this study is to analyze the salicylate content in various foods. 153 ingredients commonly used in Korean foods were analyzed by HPLC. Among the vegetables, chard(8.22$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), soybean sprout(5.13$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), perilla lean3.03$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), Chinese cabbage(2.25$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), carrot(2.16$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), and squash(1.33$\mu\textrm{g}$/g) con-rained higher amounts of salicylate as compared to other vegetables. Among fruits, oranges(5.13$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), grapefruits(2.90$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), and plums(1.65$\mu\textrm{g}$/g) contained the most. In animal foods, almost no salicylate was found except in chocolate milk(0.32$\mu\textrm{g}$/g). It was also found in black pepper(8.2$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), coffee(can)(5.00$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), mustard(4.16$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), curry powder(3.24$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), kochujang(2.37$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), cream powder(1.19$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), brown rice(1.04$\mu\textrm{g}$/g) and sesame oil(1.00$\mu\textrm{g}$/g). All information found in this study can be used as nutritional education materials in potentially allergic people for a prudent diet plan and can also provide proper dietary guidelines for these allergic patients. The effects of zeatin on Cd2+ -induced physiological toxicities in Commelina communis L (Zeatin이 Cd2+에 의한 닭의장풀의 생리적 독성에 미치는 영향)

  • Three-week old Commelina communis was transferred and grown in Hoagland solution containing $100{\mu}M\;Cd^{2+},\;100{\mu}M\;Cd^{2+}+100{\mu}M\;kinetin,\;100{\mu}M\;Cd^{2+}+100{\mu}M\;zeatin\;and\;100{\mu}M\;Cd^{2+},\;200{\mu}M$ zeatin for 7 days, and then a number of physiological activities were investigated. In control, the length of the stem of plants was increased to 4.7cm, but in $Cd^{2+},\;Cd^{2+}+kinetin,\; Cd^{2+}+100{\mu}M\;zeatin\;and\;Cd^{2+}+200{\mu}M$ zeatin treatments, the growth of plants were increased to 1.5cm, 2.1cm, 3.9cm and 4.3 em, respectively. In the treatments of $Cd^{2+},\;Cd^{2+}+kinetin,\;Cd^{2+}+100{\mu}M\;zeatin\;and\; Cd^{2+}+200{\mu}M$ zeatin, total chlorophyll contents were reduced to $26\%,\;24\%,\;15\%\;and\;3\%$, respectively, on the contrast to the control. In chlorophyll fluorescence experiments, Fv/Fm ratios were also reduced to $44\%,\;21\%,\;17\%\;and\;5\%$ in the light intensity of $2100{\mu}Mmole\;E\;m^{-2}s^{-1}\;by\;Cd^{2+},\;Cd^{2+}+kinetin,\;Cd^{2+}+$100{\mu}M\;zeatin\;and\;Cd^{2+}+200{\mu}M$ zeatin treatments on the contrast to the control. Water stresses were increased to 2.6, 1.7 and 1.2 times by $Cd^{2+},\; Cd^{2+}+kinetin\;and\;Cd^{2+}+{\mu}M$ zeatin. On the other hand, combination of $Cd^{2+}+200{\mu}M$ zeatin reduced water stress to $0.12\%$. In $Cd^{2+}$ accumulation experiments $Cd^{2+}$transports were inhibited to $33\%\; 48\%\;and\;70\%\;by\;Cd^{2+}+kinetin,\;Cd^{2+}+100{\mu}M\;zeatin\;and\;Cd^{2+}+200{\mu}M$ zeatin. Therefore, it could be concluded that zeatin clearly reduced the toxicities of $Cd^{2+}$ by reducing the absorption of $Cd^{2+}$.

The Analysis of Degradation Characteristics in Poly-Silicon Thin film Transistor Formed by Solid Phase Crystallization (고상 결정화로 제작한 다결성 실리콘 박막 트랜지스터에서의 열화특성 분석)

  • Then-channel poly-Si thin-film transistors (poly-Si TFT's) formed by solid phase crystallization (SPC) method on glass were measured to obtain the electrical parameters such as of I-V characteristics, mobility, leakage current, threshold voltage, and subthreshold slope. Then, devices were analyzed to obtain the reliability and appliability on TFT-LCD with large-size and high density. In n-channel poly-Si TFT with 5$\mu\textrm{m}$/2$\mu\textrm{m}$, 8$\mu\textrm{m}$, 30$\mu\textrm{m}$ devices of channel width/length, the field effect mobilities are 111, 116, 125 $\textrm{cm}^2$/V-s and leakage currents are 0.6, 0.1, and 0.02 pA/$\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively. Low threshold voltage and subthreshold slope, and good ON-OFF ratio are shown, as well. Thus. the poly-Si TFT's used by SPC are expected to be applied on TFT-LCD with large-size and high density, which can integrate the display panel and peripheral circuit on a targe glass substrate.

Effect of Cryopreservation by Slow and Rapid Freezing on the Sperm Motility Index, Viability and Morphology of Post-thaw Human Spermatozoa (인간 정자의 완만.급속 동결보존 방법이 융해 후 정자 운동성 지수와 생존율 및 정자 형태에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of cryopreservation by slow and rapid freezing on the sperm motility index, viability and morphology of post-thaw human spermatozoa. After rapid freezing and thawing, sperm motility index was significantly higher (MOT:47.40$\pm$20.06%, VCL : 38.12$\pm$15.58 $\mu$m/s, VSL : 28.19$\pm$14.10 $\mu$m/s, VAP:33.64$\pm$15.15 $\mu$m/s, and HYP 2.77$\pm$2.71%) than slow freezing and thawing(MOT : 43.39$\pm$ 18.79%, VCL .33.91 $\pm$ 13.50 Um/s, VSL . 19.98$\pm$0.88 $\mu$m/s, VAP : 24.60$\pm$11.72 $\mu$m/s, and HYP . 1.33$\pm$1.57% ; P<0.05). But sperm Linearity(LIN) was significantly lower(28.83 $\pm$ 10.35) comparing to the slow freezing method(34.64 $\pm$ 11.36 ; P<0.05). On the other hand, significant difference were not observed MAD, WOB, DNC and DNM by slow and rapid frozen-thawed methods. After rapid freezing and thawing, sperm viability was lower(60 $\pm$ 2.2%) than slow freezing method(62 $\pm$2.1%) and sperm morphology was higher(46$\pm$7.7%) than that(44: 8.3). But there was no significantly These results indicate that rapid freezing method was positive effect of sperm cryopreservation in human.

Anti-Cariogenicity of NCS (Non-Cariogenicity Sugar) Produced by Alkalophilic Bacillus sp. S-1013

  • The NCS inhibited the activity of glucosyltransferase which was produced by Streptococcus mutans JC-2, and the rate of inhibition at $100\muM<$ and $200\muM$ were 74.0% and 99.8%, respectively. It was stable in alkali condition, but unstable in acid condition. It was also stable up to $80^{\circ}C$. The kinetic study of the inhibition by NCS was carried out by Lineweaver-Burk plot and Dixon plot. It was non-competitive inhibition, determined by the two plots and $K_i$ and $K_i$ values were $15\muM$ and $19.3\muM$ respectively. The NCS did not show cytotoxicity against human gingival cells at $K_i$ ($15\muM$, $150\muM$, $1,500\mu$ M) concentrations. It had less cytotoxicity than chlohexidin, which has usually been used as the agent of anticaries. To evaluate the industrial applicability of the NCS, human pluck tooth was used. The inhibitory rates of tooth calcification and calcium ion elution by the NCS were 41 % and 2.5 times, respectively. These results suggested that NCS from Bacillus sp. S-1013 is an efficient anticaries agent.

A Novel Wavelength Sensor Using A Structure Of Optical Directional Coupler

  • This paper proposes a wavelength sensor based on the optical directional coupler. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) is used in analysis of the field intensity of tile light propagating thorough the structure. The device with tile width of 0.4 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and the thickness of 0.4 $\mu\textrm{m}$, which corresponding with the coupling length of 40$\mu\textrm{m}$, would provide tile linear relationship between the coupling efficiency against the wavelength. The device can sense the wavelength in a range between 1.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 1.6$\mu\textrm{m}$, with continuous resolution. The wide wavelength could be also done be paralleling th light to a number of wavelength-sensing modules with particularly required bands. Therefore, it could be employed as the wavelength sensing for most optical communications, optoelectronics, laser applications and etc.

Ecotoxicological Response of Offspring from Tigriopus japonicus s.l. Parents Exposure to 4-nonylphenol (4-nonylphenol에 노출된 암컷 저서성 요각류 Tigriopus japonicus s.l.에서 부화한 자손의 생태독성 반응)

  • The aim of this research was to detect and observe delivering generation effects from $F_0$ generation exposed to 4-nonylphenol 4NP) to $F_1$ generation on Tigriopus japonicus. The nauplius survival rate of $F_1$ from $F_0$ exposed to low 4NP concentration was significantly lower than other concentrations. Among the developmental process, copepodite first emergence day (CE) and adult male first emergence day (ME) on $F_1$ were accelerated relatively high concentration conditions. The sex ratio of $F_1$ was different between control group and treatment groups for 1, 10 and $30{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ 4NP. The fecundity of $F_1$ was not significantly affected (except, $0.1{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ 4NP). When 4NP concentrations were increased, first brooding day (FB) of F 1 was generally delayed. The length, width, and biomass of $F_1$ adult female were smaller than control group. In addition, the width and biomass of adult male were narrower or smaller than control group.

Growth Characteristics on the Water Temperature, Salinity and Irradiance of the harmful Algae Chattonella ovata Y. Hara et Chihara(Raphidophyceae) Isolated from South Sea, Korea (한국 남해에서 분리한 유해 침편모조류 Chattonella ovata Y. Hara et Chihara의 수온, 염분 및 광량에 대한 성장특성)

  • We investigated the effects of water temperature, salinity and irradiance on the growth of the harmful algae Chattonella ovata isolated from South Sea, Korea. C. ovata grew under all combinations of water temperatures and salinity, except for all the salinity conditions at the water temperature of $10^{\circ}C$, with the salinity of 7.5 psu and 10 psu at $15^{\circ}C$, and 7.5 psu at $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$. The maximum specific growth rate was $0.62\;day^{-1}$ at the combination of $30^{\circ}C$ and 30 psu. The results of two-way ANOVA indicated that growth rate depended greatly on the water temperatures while not being affected by interactions with the salinity. This indicates that C. ovata is a stenothermal and euryhaline organism, preferring high water temperatures. C. ovata did not grow at irradiance ${\leq}30\;{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$. Photoinhibition did not occur at $800\;{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$, which was the maximum irradiance used in this study. The irradiance-growth curve was described as $\mu$ = 0.74(I-16.0)/(I+43.9) at $30^{\circ}C$ and 30 psu. The half-saturation light intensity ($K_s$) was $75.9\;{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$ and compensation photon flux density ($I_c$) was $16.0\;{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$, especially this value was comparatively lower than those of Skeletonema costatum and other flagellates previously reported. Therefore, our results indicate that C. ovata has advantageous physiological characteristics for interspecific competition at the embayment and coastal areas of Korea in summer.

Identification and Antioxidant Activity of Marine Actinomycetes Streptomyces sp. ACT-1 (해양방선균 Streptomyces sp. ACT-1의 동정 및 항산화 활성)

  • For the research of the natural antioxidant from marine sources, an antioxidant-producing marine actinomycetes was isolated from sea water in Jeju coastal area. The strain was identified based on 16S rDNA sequencing, the morphology by a method of scanning electron microscopy, physiological and biochemical characteristics and cellular fatty acid analysis. The isolated strain ACT-1 cell size was $0.5\sim1.0{\mu}m$ and gram positive, aerobic, nonmotile, substrate mycelium are red and gray aerial mycelium. 16S rRNA sequence analysis showed that were Gram-positive bacteria grouped on Streptomyces genus. Results of cellular fatty acid analysis showed that major cellular fatty acids were $C_{15:0}$ anteiso (39.33%), $C_{16:1}$ cis 9 (11.96%), $C_{16:0}$ (13.08%) and $C_{17:0}$ anteiso (10.99%). Finally, strain was identified Streptomyces sp. ACT-1. The antioxidant activity of methanol extract from Streptomyces sp. ACT-1 was evaluated by measuring DPPH, hydroxyl, and alkyl radical scavenging activity using an electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer. DPPH radical scavenging activity of SBME-1 (Streptomyces broth methanol extract) was 67% at $1,000{\mu}g$/ml. Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity of SBME-1 was 84% at $500{\mu}g$/ml. Alkyl radical scavenging activity of SBME-1 was 71% at $1,000{\mu}g$/ml.

IRAS OBSERVATIONS OF DARK GLOBULES

  • Infrared emission maps are constructed at 12.5, 25, 60, and $100{\mu}m$ for dark globules B5, B34, B133, B134, B361, L134 and L1523 by using Infrared Astronomical Satellite data base. These clouds are selected on the basis of their appearance in Palomar print as dark obscuring objects with angular sizes in the range of 3 to 30 arcminutes. The short wavelength(12.5 and $25{\mu}m$) maps show the embedded infrared sources. We found many such sources only in B5, B361 and B34 regions, Diffuse component at 12.5 and $25{\mu}m$, possibly arising from the stochastically heated very small dust grains(a < $0.01{\mu}m$) by interstellar radiation field, is found in B361 and L1523 regions. Such emission is characterized by the limb brightening, and it is confirmed in L1523 and in B361. Infrared emissions at the long wavelengths(60 and $100{\mu}m$) are due to colder dusts with temperature less than 20 K. The distribution of color index determined by the ratio 60 to $100{\mu}m$ intensities shows monotonic decrease of dust temperature toward the center. The black body temperature determined from these ratios is found to lie between 16 and 23 K. Such temperature is possible for small(i.e., $a\;{\lesssim}\;0.01{\mu}m$) graphite grains if the grains are mainly heated by interstellar radiation field. Thus IRAS 100 and $60{\mu}m$ emissions are arising mainly from small grains in the colud. The distribution of such dust grains implied from the emissivity distributions at 100 and $60{\mu}m$ resembles that of isothermal sphere. This contrasts to earlier findings of much steeper distribution of dusts contributing visible extinction. These dust grains are mainly larger ones(i.e., $a{\simeq}0.1{\mu}m$). Therefore we conclude that the average grain size increase, toward the cloud center.
