An electronic nose was used to identify Salmonella contamination on beef based on odors. To detect pathogen contamination of beef, $100{\mu}L$ of $10^5CFU/g$ Salmonella Enteritidis or Salmonella Typhimurium cell suspensions were spiked onto 5 g beef sirloin samples in individual vials. Odor changes over time were then measured and analyzed using an electronic nose system to identify pathogen contamination. In principle, the electronic nose system based on a surface acoustic wave (SAW) detector produced different frequency responses depending on the time and amount of each chemical. Multivariate analysis of the odor data was conducted to detect Salmonella contamination of beef. Salmonella odors were successfully distinguished from uncontaminated beef odors by principal component analysis (PCA). The PCA results showed that Salmonella contamination of beef could be detected after 4 h of incubation. The numbers of cells enumerated by standard plate count after 4 h of inoculation were $2{\times}10^6CFU/g$ for both Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium.
A highly sensitive magnetic sensor using the Giant MagnetoImpedance effect has been developed. The sensor performance is studied and estimated. The sensor circuitry consists of a square wave generator (driving source), a sensing element in a form of composite wire of a 25 $\mu$m copper core electrodeposited with a thin layer of soft magnetic material ($Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$), and two amplifier stages for improving the gain, switching mechanism, scaler circuit, an AC power source driving the permeability of the magnetic coating layer of the sensing element into a dynamic state, and a signal pickup LC circuit formed by a pickup coil and an capacitor. Experimental studies on sensor have been carried out to investigate the key parameters in relation to the sensor sensitivity and resolution. The results showed that for high sensitivity and resolution, the frequency and magnitude of the ac driving current through the sensing element each has an optimum value, the resonance frequency of the signal pickup LC circuit should be equal to or twice as the driving frequency on the sensing element, and the anisotropy of the magnetic coating layer of the sensing wire element should be longitudinal.
Maskless depositon of copper onto n-doped and p-doped Si in an aqueous copper sulfate solution is investigated. On p-doped Si substrates, microscopic $(~10\mu\textrm{m}$) copper spots are deposited by illuminating continuous wave $Ar^+$ laser beam of wavelength 514.5 nm. Copper deposition on n-doped Si substrates is also achieved by shinning second harmonic pulses $(pulse width~25 nsec, \lambda=530 nm)$ of a passively Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The observed deposition is attributed to the electric field resulting from the Galvanic potential of a semiconductor-electrolyte junction.
Earth fissures with several kilometers will inevitably approach or cross the metro line, significantly threatening the safety of the underground structure in the earth fissure site. However, the influence of the earth fissure site's amplification effect on the metro station's dynamic response is still unclear. A representative earth fissure in Xi'an was taken as an example to establish a numerical model of a metro station in the earth fissure site. The dynamic response characteristics of the metro stations at different distances from the earth fissure under various seismic waves were calculated. The results show that the existence of the earth fissure significantly amplifies the dynamic response of the nearby underground structures. The responses of the axial force, shear force, bending moment, normal stress, horizontal displacement, inter-story drift, and relative slip of the metro station were all amplified within a specific influence range. The amplification effect increases with the seismic wave intensity. The amplification effect caused by the earth fissure has relatively weak impacts on the axial shear, shear force, bending movement, normal stress, and horizontal movement; slightly larger impacts on the inter-story drift and acceleration; and a significant impact on the relative slip. The influence ranges of the axial force and normal stress are approximately 20 m. The influence ranges of the acceleration and inter-story drift can reach 30 m. Therefore, the seismic fortification level of the underground structure in the earth fissure site needs to be improved.
The transformational conditions of plasmids $pPL-\lambda$ and pAS 1 are as follows in E. coli, Ts-mutant M 5248 strain at $30^{\circ}C$. When the culture time was 2.5 hours of mid logarithemic phase, the cell concentration was $4.5\times10^7\;cells/ml$, the optical density was equal to 0.45 at 590 nm wave length, the transformational frequencies of plasmid$pPL-\lambda$ and pAS 1 had the highest values as $2\times10^{-6}\;and\;1.5\times10^{-6}\;and\;1.5\times10^{-6}$ and respectively. For $9\times10^6$ competent cells in $200{\mu}l$, the transformational frequency was as high as $4.4\times10^{-6}$ at 510 ng plasmid concentration. The competent cells treated with the mixture of calcium chloride and thymidine twice rates of transformation than those treated with calcium chloride. The ampicillin resistance of transformants was expressed in LB broth after 2 hours at $30^{\circ}C$.

The fundamental experiments for measuring soft x-ray characteristics from the vacuum capillary are described. These experiments were primarily performed in order to generate line spectra such as x-ray lasers. The generator consists of a high-voltage power supply, a polarity-inversion ignitron pulse generator, a turbo-molecular pump, and a radiation tube with a capillary. A high-voltage condenser of 200 nF in the pulse generator is charged up to 20 kV by the power supply, and the electric charges in the condenser are discharged to the capillary in the tube after closing the ignitron. During the discharge, weakly ionized plasma forms on the inner and outer sides of a capillary. In the present work, the pump evacuates air from the tube with a pressure of about 1 mPa, and a demountable capillary was developed in order to measure x-ray spectra according to changes in the capillary length. In this capillary, the anode (target) and cathode elements can be changed corresponding to the objectives. The capillary diameter is 2.0 mm, and the length is adjusted from 1 to 50 mm. When a capillary with aluminum anode and cathode electrodes was employed, both the cathode voltage and the discharge current almost displayed damped oscillations. The peak values of the voltage and current increased when the charging voltage was increased, and their maximum values were -10.8 kV and 4.7 kA, respectively. The x-ray durations observed by a 1.6 ${\mu}$m aluminum filter were less than 30 ${\mu}$s, and we detected the aluminum characteristic x-ray intensity using a 6.8 ${\mu}$m aluminum filter. In the spectrum measurement, two sets of aluminum and titanium electrodes were employed, and we observed multi-line spectra. The line photon energies seldom varied according to changes in the condenser charging voltage and to changes in the electrode element. In the case where the titanium electrode was employed, the line number decreased with corresponding decreases in the capillary length. Compared with incoherent visible light, these rays from the capillary were diffracted and diffused greatly after passing through two slits.
This study was conducted to analyze the energy balance in closed transplants production system (CTPS) for the production of high quality transplants. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Dejima) plug seedlings were grown for 15 days at air temperature of 20$^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 70%, photoperiod of 16/8 h, and photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) of 200 ${\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ following 5 days of tooting in CTPS. Electric energy consumption was 46% for lighting, 35% for cooling, 16% for heating, 2% for air circulation, and 1% for humidifying. The electric energy utilization efficiency and the short-wave energy utilization efficiency were 0.5% and 5.4%, respectively. These results suggest that CTPS has the feasibility for the commercial production of potato plug seedlings if the electric energy consumption in CTPS is reduced and the electric energy utilization efficiency is increased.
Yakju was sterilized with high-voltage pulses of short time of a continuous pulsed electric field (PEF) system. The initial microbial counts of Yakju were $2.2{\times}10^{5}$ CFU/mL for total aerobes. The pH, acidity and electric conductivity of Yakju were 3.82, 0.37% and 1.24 mS/cm, respectively. Yakju was treated with exponential-wave formed electric pulses of 100 Hz for $0{\sim}4000{\mu}s$ under the field strength of $20{\sim}35\;kV/cm$. The lethal effect of electric fields on microorganisms was resulted from the breakdown of the cell membrane induced by the transmembrane electric potential. The critical values of the external field for the sterilization were 16.0 kV/cm for total aerobes. Logarithmic survival rates decreased linearly at low electric field strength, but curvilinearly at high electric field strength with treatment time. The sterilization of Yakju was more largely affected by the electric field strength than by the treatment time. Any changes in pH, acidity, and the growth of microorganisms were not found in the PEF treated Yakju during the storage at both $4^{\circ}C\;and\;30^{\circ}C$.

The focus of this study is to provide a method for determining the dimension of a submerged breakwater satisfying the target transmission performance or predicting the transmission coefficient of a given structure. This method was developed based on data analysis of the physical experiment that was carried out by using the submerged breakwater composed of double-layer permeable blocks. Two different armor blocks of Tetrapod and Triangular Pyramid Block were used in the experiment. The parameter $K_Th_b/h$ was introduced in the analysis of the measurement data. By using the linear regression line deduced from the analysis of the experimental data, it was possible to readily predict the wave transmission coefficient irrespective different water depths at the crest of the submerged breakwater, under the condition of significant decrease in transmitted wave height due to the submerged breakwater. This method can be effectively utilized for estimating the necessary number of blocks used for the submerged breakwater as well as comparing the transmission characteristics of the submerged breakwater according to use of different armor blocks.
