  • The vascular flora of Mt. Deokhang (a.s.l. 1072.5m, $37^{\circ}17^{\prime}{\sim}37^{\circ}20^{\prime}N$, $128^{\circ}09^{\prime}{\sim}129^{\circ}03^{\prime}E$), one of the limestone areas in Korea and is located between Samcheok-si and Taebaek-si, Gangwon-do, is surveyed from 10 Oct. 2003 to 4 Oct. 2005. The characteristics of the flora from the phytogeographical point of view is also discussed. The number of the vascular plant taxa identified in this study is 590 in total which belongs to 90 families, 337 genera, 537 species, 4 subspecies, 46 varieties and 3 forms. Of them, 30 taxa are endemic to Korea, 4 taxa are legally protected ones, and 17 taxa are generally regarded as rare and endangered species in Korea. Naturalized plants are 19 taxa. The phytogeographical importance and the conservation strategy of the flora of Mt. Deokhang focusing on either rare, endemic or phytogeographically important species are discussed.

  • This study classified the types of major forest vegetation and analyzed the syngeographical characteristics of the vegetation in the Mt. Deokhang with exhumed lime rocks. The forest vegetation on the ridge of Mt. Deokhang was classified into 1 community group, 3 communities, 2 groups, and 2 subgroups, 5 types in total. The syngeographical form of Deokhangsan fully exhibited the topographical peculiarity, proximity to subalpine, and limestone zone. In addition, Carex ciliato-marginata, Carex humilis var. nana, and so forth which appear as species with high consistency in the well-drained semiarid zone represent the soil environment of the lime stone area and northern plants such as Carex ussuriensis and Asplenium ruta-muraria represent the characteristics of the vegetation in alpestrine in close proximity. Moreover, the Carpinus turczaninowii in the area appears to show the characteristics of migratory vegetation due to the peculiarity of the habitat. The syngeographical characteristics of this study area show both the characteristics of the habitat and phytogeographic characteristics. Furthermore, they are expected to contribute to the diversity in community and habitat form in Korean peninsula in terms of vegetation science.

  • We named and described Clematis calcicola J. S. Kim, a new species of Clematis sect. Atragene (Ranunculaceae) found in a limestone area of Mt. Deokhang, Korea. Clematis calcicola is distinguished from the other species of sect. Atragene by 1) sparsely dentate, glabrescent, and subcoriaceous leaflets and 2) smooth and thick sepals.

  • This is a study intended to investigate the environmental factors including vegetation and soil in order to better understand the environmental and ecological characteristics of four different habitats of Pulsatilla tongkangensis(Mt. Baekun, Maha-ri, Kyulam-ri and Mt. Deokhang). These habitats, according to investigations, are mostly located on the slopes of mountains facing northwest at an altitude of 220m to 772m above sea level with angles of inclination ranging from 41 degree to 85 degree. A total of 27 vascular plant taxa are identified in ten quadrates of the four habitats. The importance value of these plants is as follows: Pulsatilla tongkangensis is 9.65%; Carex humilis var. nana 28.93%; Potentilla dickinsii 16.55%; Mukdenia rossii 7.09%; Peucedanum terebinthaceum and Eragrostis ferruginea 4.55%; and Vicia venosa var. albiflora 3.90%. The importance value of these six species is high, so they are at affinity with P. tongkangensis m their habitats. The degree of their average species diversity is 0.75, and that of dominance and evenness 0.24 and 0.85, respectively. Their average field capacity of soil is 19.05%, organic matter 10.51%, and soil pH is 7.43, which are similar among their habitats.
