• The effect of soil forming factors on the pedogenesis of basaltic volcanic ash soils and the influence of allophane material on soil properties have been investigated on 5 chronosequence soils situated from at the near sea coast up to the foot slope of Mt. Halla in Jeju Island. Time seems to be the important soil forming factor which today differentiates soil of the Island. Songag and Donghong soils developed in lower elevations are older and somewhat less influenced by ash shower. However, soils developed at higher elevations, Pyeongdae and Heugag, are rather younger and strongly influence by the ash. It is also proved that the parent materials are very heterogeneous. They mainly are basaltic with some contamination of acidic volcanic ashes and continental aeolian deposits where a considerable amount of quartz encountered in most soils studied. Many physico-chemical properties of soil, such NaF pH, phosphate sorption power, pH and extractable acidity are parameters to differentiate andepts and non-andeptic soils.

  • Two new species belonging to the genera Microdrosophila and Drosophila, collected from Daegwallyeong and Mt. Halla in Korea are described with illustrations of the male genitalia. Microdrosophila (Microdrosophila) gangwonensis n. sp. seems close to M. (M.) purpurata Okada, 1956, but the new species has different phallic organ. Drosophila (Drosophila) taekjuni is close to D. (D.) brevitabula Zhang and Toda, 1992, in form, but differs in the shape of aedeagus. Eight species of the genus Microdrosophila and five species in the D. immigrans species-group of genus Drosophila, including the new species are known to be distributed in Korea.

  • Cheju island is situated at about 60km south of southern most tip of the Korean peninsula. Its shape is an ellips with size of 80*40$\textrm{km}^2$, and it is characterized by a symmetrical form whose peak is Mt. Halla(1950m). Major chemical composition of the rock samples from Manjang gul cave is determined by XRF using the fundamental parameter method consisting of fully auto quantitative analysis, semi quantitative analysis (order estimation) and group quantitative analysis. Judging from chemical composition (SiO$_2$ = 53.07Wt%, Fe$_2$O$_3$ = 11.34Wt%, MgO=6.48Wt%, Na$_2$O=3.07Wt%, $K_2$O=1.05Wt%), this rocks from the Manjang gul cave are also determined. The discrepancy of K-Ar ages is found. They are 0.03 Ma and 0.42Ma, respectively. This paper describes some problems experienced in dating young volcanic rocks and then discusses chemical composition, X-ray fluorescence analysis and the age of the formation of a lava tunnel such as Manjang gul cave in cheju Island.

  • The epoch-making event of history called "JE JU 4.3" took place in JE JU beautiful island on liberation political situation in 1948. The cruelties of this event were reported awful life loss over 30,000, cruel slaughter by government, scorched villages in mountain area, silence exaction and disadvantage of implication for long time over 40 years. But, the real features are in still a fog.. Recently, the searching movement has arised owing to democracy atmosphere and literature works with "JE JU4.3" materials were published from 1988 and the government announced official apologies in 2003. The novel "The Sun-set on Halla Mt", one of those works, is accessible to real history due to its time/space back ground and the real name of persons who were related with this event. It is important for readers to consider the difference between real history and fiction story. Because a historical novel should be evaluated by writer's theme rather than history character.

  • The relationships between the growths of Abies koreana W. and climatic factors were analyzed by the use of tree-ring analysis at the subalpine belt of Mt. Halla National Park. The four cores were extracted from each 21 trees at north-facing slope (1,900m a.s.1.). The site chronology was established on the periods from 1912 to 1999. The growth of A. koreana was very poor, in particular in the years of 1982, 1988 and 1996. Simple correlation was employed to analyze the relationship between the growth of A. koreana and climatic factors. The result of simple correlation indicates that the growth of A. koreana represent positive correlations both with the mean temperatures of April and previous November, and the precipitation of previous December and January. The presence of large number of frost-damaged scars in the individual trees of A. koreana implies that local freezing temperature conditions at Mt. Halla have occurred in 1964, 1965 and 1966. The correlations between the fir chronology SOI(Southern Oscillation Index) of previous January, February and November were significantly positive. The growth ratio of A. koreana demonstrates that this species is sensitive to seasonal variations. As the winter temperature rises, the growth ratio of A. koreana decreases, on the other hand, the increase of autumn temperature accelerates the growth ratio of A. koreana. The growth decline of A. koreana was observed from 51 cores out of the 54 cores, and the overall growth declines have initiated at 1978, 1982 and 1988. Distinct growth decline of A. koreana in the range of 70% is noticed at 34 cores out of the 51 cores. The decline of, A. koreana growth appears to be related to the winter temperature which has increased since mid-1970s.

  • PM10 and PM2.5 samples were collected at the 1100 site of Mt. Halla in Jeju Island during 2011~2012, and their ionic and elemental species were analyzed, in order to investigate the characteristics of emission sources as well as aerosol compositions. The mass concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 were 22.0±13.1 µg/m3 and 11.3±6.1 µg/m3, respectively, showing 2.4~2.6 times lower than those of the capital city area of Korea. The composition ratios of major secondary pollutants (nss-SO42−, NH4+, and NO3) were the highest as 85.5 % for PM10 and 91.3 % for PM2.5, and followed by the order of marine (Na+, Cl, and Mg2+), organic acid (HCOO and CH3COO), and soil (nss-Ca2+) sources. Among the elemental species in PM10, soil-originated components (Al, Fe, and Ca) were consisted of 50.9 %, which was higher proportion than marine and anthropogenic elements. The acidification of the fine particulate matters was found to be influenced mostly by sulfuric and nitric acids, and these acids were mainly neutralized by calcium carbonate in PM10 and by ammonia in PM2.5. The clustered back trajectories showed that 47 % of total air mass inflows was from the China, and the concentrations of NO3 and nss-Ca2+ were especially high corresponding to the inflows.
