  • Youngia koidzumiana is an endemic plant growing in Mt. Chiri. In our ongoing research for endemic species in Korea, we investigated the chemical constituents from the MeOH extract of Y. koidzumiana whole plants. The MeOH extract was partitioned with hexane, ethyl acetate and BuOH, successively. Four known compounds were isolated from ethyl acetate fraction by repeated column chromatography. Their structures were elucidated by the physicochemical and spectral data as germanicol acetate (1), oleanolic acid (2), brachynereolide (3) and ixerin Y (4).

  • Thirty one morphometric characters of striped field mice(Apodemus agrarius) from eight localities in Korea were analyzed by multivariate methods in order to confirm taxonomic status of specimens from Wando island. Two subgroups were recognized: a small-size form from six localities (Mt. Taebaek, Mt. Weolak, Cheongju, Mt. Chiri, Kunsan, and Jin isoland) and a large-size form from Wando island and Cheju island. It is confirmed that the small-size form from six localities is A. a. coreae, as described by Thomas(1908), and that the large-size form from Cheju island is A. a. chejuensis, as named by Johnson and Jones (1955). Furthermore, it is confirmed that large-size specimens from Wando island is and Cheju island. It is confirmed that the small-size form from six localities is A. a coreae, as described by Thomas(1908), and that the large-size form from Cheju island is A. a. chejuensis, as named by Johnson and Jones(1955). Furthermore, it is confirmed that large-size specimens from Wando island is subspecies A. a. chejuensis, as suggested by koh (1989). In future, analyses with specimens from islands in southern coasts are necessary to clarify the taxonomic status of Apodemus agrarius in Korea.

  • Physicochemical factors, microbial population size and the properties of the bacterial isolates were assessed to find out the nature of soil ecosystem of Mt. Paektu. Samples were obtained from the surface layer of soils on which specific plant community is developed. Average content of moisture, organic matter and avaiable phosphate of the soils were 21.6%, 17.3% and 2.48mg/100g, respectively. These values were similar to those of developing forest soils, but were slightly lower than those of climax ecosystem such as Piagol in Mt. Chiri. The population size of soil bacteria ranged from 2.7 to $202.5{\times}10^5$ CFU/g.dry soil, and the size is somewhat dependent on the content of moisture and oranic matter of the forest soil. A large number of bacteria was able to decompose macromolecules such as starch, elastin and gelatin. While the distribution rate of resistant bacteria to antibiotics was high, that to toxic chemicals was low. This means that the competition between microorgani는 predominate over the interference with artificial behaviour such as spread of pesticides in the surveyed region. Bacterial species composition of each soil was comparatively simple. Pseudomonas, Agrobacterium, Flavobacterium and Xanthomonas which are Gram-negative short rods were widely distributed in the forest soils. The endospore forming Bacillus species were also main constituents of the soil microflroa. any one of the strains was not identified as Azospirillum or Micrococcus which are known to be one of major constituents of the forest soil. for the correct identification of isolates chemotaxonomic studies will be proceeded, and the strains are to be stored in the Type collection Center.

  • This study was carried out for the purpose of supplying the basic data for artificial forestation, natural regeneration and ecological conservation etc., and obtaining information on alpine vegetation, by establishing vegetation units on the basis of phytosociological classification of community and studying growth pattern on the basis of species composition, hierarchy structure and population dynamics, for Taxes cuspidata naturally growing at the alpine districts in Korea. The importance value of Taxus cuspidata by districts mostly showed above 100 in the upper story but at Mt. Chiri and Mt. Hanra communities its value was comparatively low. In the middle story it showed lower value than that of upper story and not quite showed at Mt. Chiri. Taxus cuspidata communities in the lower story were only in Mt. Hanra, Mt. Odae and Mt. Sobaek, and their importance values were about 10 which were relatively low values. The communities were classified into five groups as Taxus cuspidata-Males baccata var. mandshurica, Taxus cuspidata-Abies nephrolepis, Taxus cuspidata-Abies koreana, Taxus cuspidata-Acer mono and Taxus cuspidata-Euonymus quelpaertensis by TWINSPAN analysis. Taxus cuspidata-Abies koreana community was distributed at the northern aspect of the mountain ridges and at higher elevation than other communities and distributed. Taxus cuspidata-Acer mono community was relatively low than the others and distributed at the hillsides of mountain. And Taxus cuspidata-Euonymus quelpaertensis communities were distributed at the relatively high elevation and northern and eastern aspect of the mountain tap, and Taxus cuspidata-Malus baccata var. mandshurica communities were distributed at the medium elevation, and southern and eastern aspect of the mountain ridge. In the relation between communities and environmental factors, it was correlated with aspect, elevation and topography at the first axis, and elevation, slope at the second axis.

  • For the purpose of contributing to wild birds protection and propagation, distribution characteristics and ecological breeding habitats were surveyed in Mt. Chiri from September, 1986 to December, 1989 by the use of the nestboxes installed in four study sites by the altitude. The results were as follows ; 1. During the study period, observed birds were 2,403 individuals belong to 59 species, especially, at the 1,400m above altitude the rare species, Falco tinnunculus and the protecting bird species such as Ninox scutulata, Strix aluco and Prunella collaris were observed. 2. In the inhabitation structure of birds by the altitude, Fringilla montfringilla was the highest dominance (41.33%) among the inhabitated birds in the surveyed area. 3. Phasianus colchicus and Streptopelia orientalis which were mainly inhabited in hilly area were observed until the altitude of 900m. 4. The 92.5% of nest boxes was mainly used by the small birds, Parus spp. and Sitta europaea. These species preferred the nest boxes installed at the edge or along the mountaineering path, because they could get food and water easily from those places. 5. The utilization rate of the nest boxes was showed 86% at 500m, 96% at 900m, 98% at 1,400m and 90% at 1,700m above the altitude, respectively. 6. The breeding rate of birds in the nest boxes was showed from 6% to 46% by altitude. Parus varius was the highest breeding species in the surveyed area. These birds inhabited above 500m laid eggs from 15th, April to 22th, May(n=22), but those above 1,700m laid eggs from 28th, April to 27th, May(n=13), that 13 days were delayed at high altitude. 7. Food items of the chicks of the 5 species collected by the collar method were animal matters ; 91.3% of the food was forest insects such as Phalera asiimilis and Pleuroptya batteata except 8.7% of spiders.

  • The heavy metal contents accumulated in the birds organ were analyzed by use of 10 species of birds to investigate the environmental pollution of the birds inhabited in Mt. Chiri. Heavy metal concentrations in bird organs, e.g. muscle, liver, kidney, lung and heart were analyzed for 10 species of the birds. 1. Contents of some heavy metal elements such as Fe, Zn, Cu and Mn were similar level compared with any other district. But contents of some heavy metal elements shch as Pb, Cd and Hg were comparatively lower level than those in any other district. 2. The contents of heavy metal accumulation in the muscle of the bird organs were detected much more from the migrants than the resident birds ; the resident bird, Phasianus colchicus were detected to contain $0.01{\mu}g/g$ og Hg and $0.05{\mu}g/g$ of Cd, but in the migrant bird, Turdus dauma they were detected to contain $0.17{\mu}g/g$ of Hg and $0.08{\mu}g/g$ of Cd. 3. The contents of lead were scarcely detected in the muscle of 10 species of birds, but it was highly detected from the hunting (meat-eating) birds such as Phasianus colchicus ($0.17{\mu}g/g$) and Streptopelia orientalis ($0.11{\mu}g/g$). Generally, the concentration of heavy metals of the analyzed birds was more mercury than Cadmium.

  • To investigate the structure of the plant community of Daewon valley forest in Mt. Chiri, eighty-nine plots were set up by the dumped sampling method. The classification by TWINSPAN and DCA ordination were applied to the study area in order to classify item into several groups based on woody plants and environmental variables. The classification had been successfully overlayed on an ordination of the same data using DCA. The plots can be classified into five groups by TWINSPAN and DCA. There are Pinus densiflora community. Quercus variabilis-Q. serrata community. Carpinus laxiflora community. Q. monogolica community and Cornus controversa-Q. mongolica community. The successional trends of tree species by both techniques seem to be from P. densiflora through Q. variabilis, Q. serrata to C. laxiflora on the low altitude and from Q. mongolica to C. controversa on the high altitude in the canopy layer. As a result of the analysis for the relationship between the stand scores of DCA and environmental variables. they had a tendancy to increase significantly from the P. densiflora community to C. laxiflora community that was soil moisture. the amount of soil humus and soil nutrients.
