Mt. Mudeung is located in Gwangju city, Damyang-Gun, Hwasun-Gun and its round form give us the mood of soft and rich. Its location is $126^{\circ}06'-127^{\circ}01'E$ and $35^{\circ}06'-35^{\circ}10'N$ and its highest peak is Cheonwang-bong with the height of 1,187 m. The Gwangju city is located in the West of Mt. Mudeng and the mountain range with a small basin in its East. The pavilion such as the Soswaewon, Songganjeong, Sigyongjeong are distributed along the stream in the north of Mt. Mudeung. The mountain is formed from the volcanic activity, Gwangju cauldron during the Cretaceous. The top part of Mt. Mudeung is composed of dark gray quartz-andesite and its K-Ar whole rock age is $48.1{\pm}1.7Ma$. The composition of the north area, where the Wonhyosa temple is located, is micrographic granite, whereas the composition of south area is rhyolite mainly. The main ridge of Mt. Mudeung runs from North, starting from the Bukbong, to south, passing Cheonwangbong, Jangbuljae and ending Anyangsan. Geologic feature of the mountain includes volcanic landform, mountaineous landform, and stream landform. The Seosukdae, Ipseokdae, Gyubongam, which are main ridges and formed from volcanic activity, are composed of mainly columnar joint. Saeinbong and Majipbong in the south-west are composed of mainly cliff and dome. The typical erosion landform of the mountain has three different types of the weathering-cave, each of which reflect the property of the original rock. Four different area of wide block stream, they makes the geological feature of spring-water, though its scale is small compared to that of water fall.
Ecomuseum which appeared in France in 1968 and widely diffused over the world, is a new type of museum. The purpose of this museum is not to simply possess and exhibit the existing relics, but to discover the locational senses of a territory by in-situ conserving and interpreting its entire natural and cultural heritages, and to plan the participation of its population and the development of its local community. The significance of this museum can be found in the recovery of disappearing collective memories of a territory, the restoration of the cultural identity of its population and the revitalization of a underdeveloped area. As the majority of these museums are fragmented or open air museums, an 'web ecomuseum' which makes the remote offering of informations about whole dispersed heritages and their holistic interpretation possible by digitalizing, recording, conserving, interpreting and utilizing related heritages, is necessary. This paper considers the possibility of web ecomuseum and its constitution contents and methods through the case of Mountain Mudeung area. Especially, in relation to the latter, this paper suggests a plan which consists of selection of own local themes, construction of digital archives, design of web expositions and production of electronic cultural maps.
Saussurea nipponica subsp. higomontana was recorded first from Mt. Mudeung-san, Gwangju-si, Korea. We named the plant Mu-deung-chui. It had been considered as an endemic plant to Japan. S. nipponica sensu lato is the one of the most famous polymorphic species which consists of 7 infraspecific taxa (subspecies) isolating geographically. Among them, S. nipponica subsp. higomontana is distributed on high mountain regions of Kyushu and Shikoku.
Gwangjueupseong (Gwangju Town Wall) has been found in the site of the Asian Culture Complex (former Provincial Government of Jeonnam) by archaeological field survey. The length of the remaining wall is 85.1m, and the Town Wall consists of ten kinds of rock type. The major rock types are dacite (41.1%) and andesite (35.7%). Dacite composes main rock blocks of the wall, and andesite is used to fill the cavity between main rock blocks. These rocks look very similar to basement rocks of the Mudeung Mountain on the basis of occurrence features, magnetic susceptibility, petrological, mineralogical and geochemical properties. Also, quarrying traces were found on the southwestern slope of the mountain along the Jeungsimsa Temple valley. Thus, it is probable that the rock materials of the Gwangju Town Wall were supplied from the Mudeung Mountain and that they were transported along the Gwangju river.
Understanding the readability of texts in signs is necessary to enhance the communication effectiveness of the self-guided interpretive signs. This study compared signs' readability by different text attributes. A total of 1391 respondents participated in the questionnaire survey at the 'Neodeolgeong' area in Mudeung-Mountain Provincial Park during September-November of 2004. This study found that 'Hy Gyunmyungjo' in letter style, 'both-side' in letter justification, 190% (HWP 2002) in space between lines, 10 (HWP 2002) in space between letters, and 25 in the number of letters in a line showed the highest readability in text size 58 point, respectively. This study illustrated an example of an interpretive sign made up by combing the five text attributes which show the highest readability. This study also discussed the interpretive signs' text design and future research questions.
This study compared the results of Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) on trail managerial conditions by trail section in Mudeung-Mountain Provincial Park. The study also examined the validity of using overall survey method (OSM: analyzing IPA from the data collected from all the trails without separating trails by section) by comparing the OSM results with those obtained from the survey by section. A total of 258 users who visited the Park was surveyed using questionnaire in the four designated trail sections during the September of 2000. The result of IPA showed that there are differences in twenty three attributes out of the 26 selected attributes (88.5%) among four trail sections. The overall IPA results obtained from the total of four trail sections were not the same with the IPA results from each trail section in twenty three attributes (88.5%) out of the 26 selected attributes. It suggests that we need to use a survey segmented by trail sections rather than a survey for overall trails to obtain better information for more efficient trail management.

This research investigated the landscape characteristics of the skyline and the cognitive characteristics of Mt. Mudeung (1,186m) from various viewpoints. Mt. Mudeung, the representative landscape of Gwangju City, has been recognized as a natural landmark and theme of paintings. By analyzing the perspective from 32 points with a digital terrain model, some landscape indices of the skyline were derived and the relationships are discussed. Assessment of the semantic differential scale with 21 adjective variables and representativeness to 15 landscape photographs of the mountain were accomplished. 1. Through regression analysis of the skyline indices, significant relationships were found between them the angle from the visual axis and number of skyline jumps, the vertical angle fluctuation and number of jumps per degree, the visual depth fluctuation and vertical angle fluctuation of skyline, and between the vertical angle mean and number of jumps per degree. Meaningful relations were found between the number of jumps of skyline to number of jumps per degree and the angle from visual axis to visual distance. However, in the representative assessment no difference was found on the angle from visual axis of viewpoints. On the other hand, it seemed to relate representativeness with visual clarity based on visual distance. 2. We found 4 factors "familiarity", "fluctuation of skylines", "openness", and "feeling of texture" in the results of factor analysis of semantic differential assessment. When considering the results of assessment for representativeness, adjective words for familiarity and openness seemed to have a close assessment. Specifically, the research showed that the landscape representation was highly assessed in a view which could be seen from the higher parts to the lower part of hills. This result indicates that the management of viewpoints which could get a scene from intermediate to distant, and locating a high elevation is important. 3. In the picturesque expression of Mt. Mudeung, various impressions from the different points, a skyline based on the top of Mt. Mudeung and a mono structure by overlapping hills were common characteristics. These common characteristics were also partially found through the analysis of topographical landscape indices and landscape images. Therefore, the viewpoints for the representative landscape management should be selected in natural or open spaces.
The purpose of this study is to investigate a feasibility of a small mountain as a field work site on geological features in Earth sciences classes at all levels. Mt. Geumdang with the height of 305 meters from the sea level is located in the metropolitan city of Gwangju, southern part of Korea. The study reviews the human and natural geography, geological features, geomorphic resources, landscapes, and conveniences of the mountain for a possibility of meaningful field work. The population within the distance of 5 km from the mountain stands at about 620,000 and 170,000 of them are students and teachers. Mt. Geumdang has a warm temperature climate with low rainfall throughout the year, so it seems suitable for a field survey. Road network and public transportation system around the area are well-developed and easily accessible. Mt. Geumdang shows various rock type and geological structures. The basement rock is Gwangju granite, which is plutonic body of the Jurassic period. Also, granophyre (micrographic granite) and various volcanic rocks distributed as bedded tuff, lapilli tuff, and rhyolite of the Cretaceous period. Many andesitic and felsic dykes were intruded into the rock by joint system. In Mt. Geumdang, many geomorphic resources are found such as U shaped mountain, joint, fault, lamination, gnamma, tor, cliff, groove, block stream and block field, regolith, and saprolite. It has a beautiful mountain scenery including the view of whole shape of Mt. Mudeung, panoramic view of the town, Pungam lake, World Cup stadium and sunrise and sunset. Furthermore, the area has ecologic study facilities related to geology, emergency medical and convenience facilities for field works. In conclusion, Mt. Geumdang is highly feasible for geological field studies at all levels.

In this study, the effect on the spatial distribution and diffusion of Arishigona, Sanaji and Bang-gae appearing in Jeolla-do was analyzed using geomorphic elements. Based on result, the AriShigona is distributed in the western plains of the Yeongsan River basin and around from the Noryeong mountain range to Mudeung mountain range, the Sanaji is mainly diffused in the middle and upper parts of the Seomjin River and the lower parts of the Mangyeong River, Dongjin River and the Boseong River basin, and the Bang-gae is found to be distributed in the Seomjin River and the upper part of the Yeongsan River basin. Although the cultural centers of these Rice-paddy Weeding Songs are different but they appear to have a similar distribution pattern in Jeolla-do. This is used as a diffusion path of cultural elements by crossing lineaments in various directions and serving bridge role at the same time. However, in the region where the lineaments do not intersect, the continuity of Rice-paddy Weeding Songs are relatively low, which are considered to be reflected in the spatial distribution and propagation of the sound due to the influence of the drain network rather than the lineament. The results of this study can provide basic data for spatial distribution of Rice-paddy Weeding Songs, and regionality and cultural division by diffusion characteristics.
The Gwangju Stream is a major tributary of the Yeongsan River. To maintain environmental and ecological functions in the stream, the flow is secured by natural water from the Mudeung Mountain as well as waters discharged from Lake Juam and the Gwangju sewage treatment plants. A substantial amount of water is supplied into the upper reaches of Gwangju Stream from Lake Juam. To examine the ecological effects of the water input from Lake Juam on the Gwangju Stream, a field survey of phytoplankton community species and an evaluation of water properties was conducted at five stations, from station GJ1 before the inflow to station GJ5 in the lower region. Nutrient levels decreased in the vicinity of the Lake Juam inflow, suggesting that this water inflow can contribute to the reduction of eutrophication in the stream. The phytoplankton community was mainly composed of Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, and Cyanophyceae, and the community structure was similar to that of the other study sites located near the water inflow regions. The inflow of water from Lake Juam can affect water quality and the phytoplankton community over a limited area, reducing eutrophication and increasing water flow in the Gwangju Stream.
