  • Cooling type of traction motor for EMU in domestic is mostly an open type. Its system is a cooling air entered through air inlet cool down a traction motor and an hot air by traction motor get out air outlet. It is easy to cool it down but hard to maintain it. To improve an ability of maintenance, a total enclosed type traction motor is already developed and used in abroad, not an opne type. So we developed a total enclosed type traction motor which will be used in domestic and abroad EMU. We tried to reduce a weight and a size compared with the abroad one. In contrast with open type traction motors which cool off inside of motors, total enclosed motors cool down by cooling exterior frame of motors. In this case, cooling fins or air fan blowing to the exterior of motors are applied. The total enclosed type traction motor developed by us have two housing to block the foreign substance into inner of a motor and have two cooling fan to easy to reduce a heat happened at a coil. In this paper, design of a cooling structure of the total enclosed traction motor developed twice and performance verification through test will be discussed.

  • The load-sensing hydraulic system which was developed to improve energy efficiency of conventional hydraulic systems has its own properties. The instability of system responses, linearity of a servo valve, robustness for variation of external load, and dynamic interference between hydraulic motors are such properties which have much to do with control properties of the system. The load-sensing hydraulic system has instability tendancy because the load-sensing mechanism makes a positive feedback loop between the motor part and the pump part. A flow property of the servo valve can be said to be linear because the flow through the valve has nothing to do with a load pressure and the flow is strictly proportional to a valve opening which is adjusted by a valve command signal. The resultant control property can be said to be robust because the steady-state control performance is independent to the load actuated on the motor shaft. In the case when one pump simultaneously drives more than two hydraulic motors, the pump outlet pressure is determined by a hydraulic motor of the largest load pressure among all of the hydraulic motors, and, thus, the other motors are dominated by the largest load pressure. That is, the other motors can be said to be interfered by the motor of the largest load pressure.

  • To assess the condition of stator insulation, nondestructive tests were performed on twenty five coil groups and twenty six motors. The stator windings has nominal ratings of 6.6kV and are classified into five coil groups ;one group with healthy insulation and four groups with four different types of artificial defects. After completing nondestructive tests, the AC voltage applied to the stator windings was gradually increasing until insulation failure in order to obtain the breakdown voltage. No.1, No.2 and No.6 of 6.6kV motors failed near rated voltage of 14kV, 8.7kV and 14kV, respectively. The breakdown voltage of three motors was lower that expected for good quality coils(14.2kV) in 6.6kV motors. No.3 and No.6 of 4.16kV motors failed near rated voltage of 5.6kV and 4.2kV, respectively. Almost all of failures were located in a line-end coil at the exit from the core slot. The breakdown voltages and the types of defects showed strong relation to the stator insulation tests such as in the case of AC current, dissipation factor(tan${\delta}$) and partial discharge magnitude.

  • In this paper, we have simulated the transient stability of power system with dynamic loads. Dynamic load characteristics have an important influence on power system stability. In study of power system stability, motors form a major portion of the system loads. Induction motors and synchronous motors in particular form the workhorse of the electric power industry. Therefore modelling of motors is important in system stability. We investigate the effect of motors loads of Kwang Yang network with three phase fault.

  • Along with the development of power electronics and magnetic materials, permanent magnet (PM) brushless direct current (BLDC) motors are now widely used in many fields of modern industry BLDC motors have many advantages such as high efficiency, large peak torque, easy control of speed, and reliable working characteristics. However, Compared with the other electric motors without a PM, BLDC motors with a PM have inherent cogging torque. It is often a principle source of vibration, noise and difficulty of control in BLDC motors. Cogging torque which is produced by the interaction of the rotor magnetic flux and angular variation in the stator magnetic reluctance can be reduced by sinusoidal air-gap flux density waveform due to reduction of variation of magnetic reluctance. Therefore, this paper will present a design method of magnetizing system for reduction of cogging torque and low manufacturing cost of BLDC motor with isotropic bonded neodynium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) magnets in ring type by sinusoidal air-gap flux density distribution. An analytical technique of magnetization makes use of two-dimensional finite element method (2-D FEM) and Preisach model that expresses the hysteresis phenomenon of magnetic materials in order for accurate calculation. In addition, For optimum design of magnetizing fixture, Factorial design which is one of the design of experiments (DOE) is used.

  • This paper is presented for the design of the thrust yoke for the spindle motors. HDD spindle motors are rotated by fluid dynamic bearing which consists of the shaft and the sleeve with the groove to generate the pressure. Because the thrust and journal clearances between shaft and sleeve is too small, around 8um and 2.5um, respectively, it is very difficult to design the bearing to come up to the disks to read and write the data. By the way, it is also so hard to overcome the load of the disks with only the thrust bearing. So, the paper is proposed for the trust yoke to come up to the disks considering of the force of the thrust bearing. In this paper, we proposed the thrust yoke with an unique fluid dynamic bearing in comparison with the motors without thrust yoke. Experimental results show the performance of the thrust yoke of the spindle motors for an HDD.

  • Linear motor can be directly applied to the system needed linear motions without rotary motions. To control high-speed and high-resolution, the development of the linear motors is recently required in the high-integrated and speed process industry This paper presents thermal and vibration analyses as well as measurement standards of the newly developed linear motors through analyzing the thermal behaviors and vibration characteristics of the advanced products. The thermal measurements are conducted for comparing the developed linear motor with the advanced linear motor and the Finite Volume Method(FVM) is used to identify the measurement results. And then the vibration measurement are carried out in the developed and advanced linear motors with respect to the speed. To identify the measurement results, the Finite Element Method is utilized in the developed and advanced linear motors, respectively. The FVM, FEM, and experiments make it possible to understand these characteristics. The improvement is suggested through their results conducted experiment and analyses.

  • This paper presents the controller of multiple DC motors using the network. This controller has been built with 16-bits one chip microprocessor (87C196CA) which includes the integrated CAN serial communication and position control for two motors. Since only one microprocessor is needed, the proposed controller is not only cost effective but also powerful. The system is composed of one main controller, trajectory planner, and the other sub controller, position controller. The main controller which has been built using Visual Basic programming on the Pentium PC, generates the trajectory and then transmits it to the sub controller. The trajectory transmitted from the PC will be processed by the sub controller. Two motors are controlled using the conventional position control, PID, to reach them the same target position but with different velocities at the same time. The communications between the main controller and sub controller is performed through the RS-232 or the CAN communication The CAN would be safer and faster than serial communication network since it has non-destructive bitwise arbitration specification. In this paper, we consider the CAN communications generally and then show the usefulness of the proposed controller by demonstrating position control of two DC motors.

  • Stepper motor is widely used in positioning applications due to its durability and high torque to inertia ratio as well as low cost and ability to be easily controlled with open-loop. Due to increased resolution of position control and improved stability of motion control, microstepping has drawn attention in industry since it was introduced in 1970s. With the increase in computational power and decrease in cost of embedded processors in recent years, drives and control systems for stepper motors have become more sophisticate than ever. Thus, closed-loop control methods have been developed to improve the performance of the stepper motors. In this paper, we review not only basic principles of conventional control methods used for stepper motors but also that of microstepping control. In addition, we surveyed recent development in nonlinear control methods applied to stepper motors. The nonlinear control methods are presented in the view of Lyapunov stability. Nonlinear torque disturbance observer, sliding mode control, and nonlinear phase compensation are also presented.

  • Stator insulation quality assessment for high voltage motors is a major issue for the reliable maintenance of industrial and power plants. To assess the condition of stator insulation, nondestructive tests were performed on the sixty coil groups of twelve motors. After completing the nondestructive tests, the AC voltage applied to the stator winding was gradually increased until insulation failure in order to obtain the breakdown voltage. The stator winding of each motor was classified into five coil groups; one group with healthy insulation and four groups with four different types of artificial defects. To analyze the breakdown voltage statistically, Weibull distribution was employed for the tests on the fifty coil groups of ten motors. The 50th percentile values of the measured breakdown voltages based on the statistical data of the five coil groups of ten motors were 26.1kV, 25.0kV, 24.4kV, 26.7kV and 30.5kV, respectively. Almost all of the failures were located in the line-end coil at the exit of the core slot. The breakdown voltages and the types of defects showed strong relation to the stator insulation tests such as in the case of dissipation factor and ac current. It is shown that the condition of the motor insulation can be determined from the relationship between the probability of failure and the type of defect.
