  • This paper deals with the performance analysis of three phase induction motor considering its stator side faults and operating thermal limits. The speed control of induction motor using three phase boost converter operated by a MOSFET switch and a PI controller is demonstrated and presented in this article. IGBTs switches are used for inverter drive mechanism. The experimental result of speed control of induction motor using voltage control technique clearly shows better accuracy than conventional methods of speed control. A three phase 1HP 415V 0.78 kW 4 Pole induction motor is designed using motor solver software. Based on the parameters used in the software thermal analysis of induction motor is done and torque variation with conductor area, efficiency, output curve, losses in different parts of motor has been obtained. Also different types of faults namely under voltage, over voltage, stator imbalanced voltage, turn to turn, locked rotor bar, wrong alignment of rotor bar with respect to stator are studied and fault analysis is performed. Hence comparison is made based upon the results obtained before and after faults.

  • Recently, we have developed a linear brushless DC motor(LBLDCM) with high speed and precise position control performance to apply it to the semiconductor assembly and inspection machinery. It is composed of double side alignment by two armature-stator pairs and each pair is consist of a moving armature with 8 poles by 3 phase coils and a stator with rare earth permanent magnet (Nd-Fe-B) arrays. Through the thrust force analysis on a simplified and whole model of the suggested LBLDCM by an Electromagnetic FEM solver, skew angle of magnet arrays to reduce the thrust force ripple and the winding conditions of the armature is designed. From experimental results, the user's requirements was satisfied and we confirmed distinctly that the repeatable accuracy less than a micron of the linear motion can be obtained at high speed by the developed LBLDCM. This is owing to directly drive the work without the gear train.

  • Flow analysis and performa nce evaluation have been performed for a ventilation axial-flow fan with different positions of the motor. Two different positions of motor have been tested; one is in front of the impeller and the other is behind the impeller. Flow analyses are performed by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations through a finite-volume solver. Preliminary numerical calculations are carried out to test the performances of different turbulence models, i.e., SST model, k-$\omega$ model, and k-$\varepsilon$ model with and without using empirical wall function in the flow analysis. The validation of numerical analyses has been performed in comparison with the experimental data. The numerical results for the performance characteristics of the ventilation axial-flow fan with two different positions of the motor have been presented.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics depending on the shape of an internal motor in a small-size sirocco fan for residential ventilation have been investigated. For the aerodynamic analyses of the sirocco fan, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with the shear stress transport model for turbulence closure. The flow analyses are performed on hexahedral grids using a finite-volume solver. The validation of the numerical results at steady-state is performed by comparing with experimental data for the pressure and efficiency. In order to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics depending on shape of an internal motor in a sirocco fan, the reference shape is analyzed compared to the case without internal motor. Additionally, two shape parameters, height and width of the internal motor in a sirocco fan, are tested to investigate their effects on the aerodynamic characteristics. The results show that the shape of the internal motor in a sirocco fan is an important factor to improve the aerodynamic performances.

  • In this paper, the design of the outer core which is one part of the linear motor is investigated by using the topology optimization and FEM. The object functions are to reduce the outer core area of the linear motor with the maximum magnetic energy in airgap. For topology optimization, the finite element model is made through the result of ANSYS, and the sensitivity calculation is done using ANSTOP(developed general software for topology optimization of electromagnetics). In ANSTOP, the optimization routine is implemented using SLP in DOT and the ANSYS is used as a function solver.

  • This study is for implementation of PC based Motor fault diagnosis system. By using harmonics and current signals of the motor, this system diagnoses the motor condition by accumulated harmonic contribution rate. In this proposed system that was composed of 5 parts. A sensor, connection box, evaluation board, device server, and main computer are those. There were two types of sensor, one was harmonic sensor the other was current sensors. The signal was acquired by sensor, and transferred to evaluation board. Second one is connection box. Because the output type of sensor and input type of evaluation board is different, connection box was necessary. Third one was evaluation board. The signal from the sensor was converted to digital signal in evaluation board. And this signal was transferred to device server Fourth one was device solver. Device server transferred the data from evaluation board to main computer. And the last one was other parts controlled by main computer. In main computer, there were communication and diagnosis algorithms. The result was derived by main computer. In the result, there were 12 categories and 5 levels of motor conditions. The proposed system had some advantages comparing with stand alone type commercial motor fault diagnosis system. The first, by using remote access it was easier to get the conditions of motor. The second, there was no need to handle the sensors when users measured the motor signals. By this Property, no one was necessary at motor location site. The third, this system was less restricted by times and places than commercial stand alone type diagnosis system. Therefore users can operate this system only using the main computer. Once the sensors are installed at the motor, users doesn't need to move to check up the condition of motors. Moreover, if there is ethernet hub, many motors can be not only diagnosed at once but also decreased its cost.

  • Accurate description of starting transient history allows and justifies the use of small margin of safety for the engine parts, resulting in high motor mass ratio in addition to satisfying the control and guidance requirements of the vehicle. Studies have been carried out for the prediction and reduction of ignition peak and pressure-rise rate during the starting transient of solid rocket motors. Numerical studies have been carried out using a two dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. It has been inferred through the parametric studies that, in the case of solid rocket motors with uniform port, high ignition peak is observed at high spread rate and low pressure-rise rate. In the case of the port with sudden expansion configuration, high ignition peak is observed at relatively high average spread rate and high-pressure rise rate. These studies are expected to aid the designer in reducing the ignition peak by altering the propellant properties or igniter characteristics without sacrificing the motor performance.

  • The adaptive wavelet method is studied for the enhancement of computational efficiency of three-dimensional flows. For implementation of the method for three-dimensional Euler equation, wavelet decomposition process is introduced based on the previous two-dimensional adaptive wavelet method. The order of numerical accuracy of an original solver is preserved by applying modified thresholding value. In order to assess the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, the method is applied to the computation of flow field around ONERA-M6 wing in transonic regime with 4th and 6th order interpolating polynomial respectively. Through the application, it is confirmed that the three-dimensional adaptive wavelet method can reduce the computational time while conserving the numerical accuracy of an original solver.
