Unlike the hydraulic power steering (HPS) system, which operates by the high pressure of a fluid obtained from the engine power, the motor-driven power steering (MDPS) system uses an electric motor to steer the wheel without consuming engine power. To steer the wheel with an electric motor, a worm wheel and a worm gear rotating between the steering shaft and motor are required. Any imperfection during the construction of an MDPS system or in a composing part creates noise and vibration, which can be sensed by a driver. To solve the noise and vibration problems, each part must be designed to not resonate with other parts. In this work, we developed the measurement and analysis systems to obtain the noise and the vibration of an automobile MDPS system. A signal analyzer was equipped with a 96 kHz, 24-bit ADC and a 150 MHz digital signal processor. The predetermined threshold value of the vibration in the MDPS system was used to determine the pass/fail, and the results were displayed on the screen. Our system can be used in the fabrication line to swiftly determine any imperfections in the MDPS system construction.
The power steering system for vehicles is becoming essential for supporting the steering efforts of the drivers, especially for the parking lot maneuver Although hydraulic power steering has been widely used for years, its efficiency is not high enough. The problems associated with a hydraulic howe. steering system can be solved by a motor driven power steering (MDPS) system. In this study, a dynamic model and a control algorithm for the ball screw type of MDPS system have been derived and analyzed by using the method of discrete modeling technology. To improve steering feel and power steering characteristics, two derivative gains are added to the conventional power boosting control algorithm. Through simulations, the effects of the control gain on the steering angle gain were verified in the frequency domain. The steering returnability and steering torque phase lag in on-center handling test were also evaluated in the time domain.
For the robust design of Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) systems, it is important to consider energy efficiency from every aspect such as system configuration and current flow, etc. If design optimization is not considered, it has many problems on a vehicle. For example, when evaluating steering test, particularly the Catch-up test which turning the steering wheel left or right quickly, steering effort should be increased rapidly. Also a vehicle might have poor fuel efficiency. In this study, it is calculated energy consumption for each component of the steering system and analyzed factors of energy consumption. As a result, this paper redefines a method to estimate steering input torque using characteristics of vehicle electric components and then conducts an analysis of contribution for the Catch-up.

In this study, dynamic model and control algorithm of the ball screw type of MDPS systenem have been derived and analysed by using the method of discrete modeling technology. To improve steering feel and power steering characteristics, the additional scheme is proposed to the conventional power boosting control algorithm. Through simulations, control gain effects to the steering angle gain in the frequency domain were verified. In this paper, a new estimation method is proposed to calculate steering rack axial force using a 3 dimensional tire mesh model when a car is standing on the road. This model is established by considering changes of camber angle and contact patch between the tires and the ground according to steering angle. The steering rack bar axial force is estimated based on the static equilibrium equations of forces and moments. A tire friction force is supposed to act on the center point of the contact patch, and the proportional coefficient of friction depending on contact patch is suggested. Using the proposed estimation method, rack axial force sensitivity analysis is evaluated according to changes of suspension geometry. Then optimal motor power of Motor Driven Power Steering(MDPS) is evaluated using suggested rack forces.
MDPS (motor driven power steering) systems have been widely used in vehicles due to their improved fuel efficiency and steering performance when compared to conventional hydraulic steering. However, the reduction of torque ripples and material cost are important issues. A low resolution position sensor for MDPS is one of the candidates for reducing the material costs. However, it may increases the torque ripple due to the current harmonics caused by low resolution encoder signals. In this paper, the torque ripple caused by the quantized rotor position of the low resolution encoder is analyzed. To reduce the torque ripples caused by the quantization of the encoder signals, the rotor position and the speed are estimated by measuring the frequency of the encoder signals. In addition, the compensating q-axis current is added to the current command so that the 6th order torque harmonic is attenuated. The reduction of torque ripples by applying the estimated rotor position and the compensated q-axis current is verified through experimental results.
본 논문에서는 차량에 사용되는 MDPS(Motor Driven Power Steering) 시스템에 사용되는 BLDC(Brush Less Direct Current) 모터 제어기의 파괴 시험에 적합한 테스트 케이스 생성 방법을 제시한다. 제안하는 방법은 입력 기반 테스트 방법의 하나인 CTM(Classification Tree Method)을 수정한 방법이다.
It is well known that most power steering systems obtain the power by a hydraulic mechanism. Therefore, it consumes more energy because the oil power should be sustained all the times. Recently, to solve this problem the Electric Power System(EPS) or Motor Driven Power System(MDPS) has widely equipped in passenger vehicles. In this research the concurrent simulation technique for an EPS system with MATLAB/SIMULINK and a full vehicle model has been developed. The dynamic responses of vehicle chassis and steering system are evaluated. Then, a full vehicle model interacted with EPS control is concurrently simulated with an impulsive steering wheel torque input to analyze the stability of 'free control' or hands free motion for SUV. This integrated method allows engineers to reduce the prototype testing cost and to shorten the developing period.

The back emf harmonics of a permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motor is a major source of torque ripple. For torque control applications including column fitted MDPS (motor driven power steering) systems, it is essential to reduce the mechanical vibrations due to torque ripples at low speeds. In this paper, a torque ripple reduction algorithm for interior PM synchronous motors is proposed. The harmonic currents that cancel the $6^{th}$ order torque harmonic are added to the nominal dq currents for MTPA (maximum torque per ampere) operation. The compensated harmonic currents are derived from flux linkage harmonics based on a FFT analysis of the back emf harmonics. Simulation and experimental results verify that the $6^{th}$ order torque harmonic and THD of the torque ripple are reduced by compensating the dq harmonic currents.
