A intelligent mobile hexapod robot with various types of sensors and wireless camera is introduced. We show this mobile robot can detect objects well by combining the results of active sensors and image processing algorithm. First, to detect objects, active sensors such as infrared rays sensors and supersonic waves sensors are employed together and calculates the distance in real time between the object and the robot using sensor's output. The difference between the measured value and calculated value is less than 5%. This paper suggests effective visual detecting system for moving objects with specified color and motion information. The proposed method includes the object extraction and definition process which uses color transformation and AWUPC computation to decide the existence of moving object. We add weighing values to each results from sensors and the camera. Final results are combined to only one value which represents the probability of an object in the limited distance. Sensor fusion technique improves the detection rate at least 7% higher than the technique using individual sensor.
In this paper, a new protocol-based approach was proposed for development of a ubiquitous vision system. It is possible to apply the approach by regarding the ubiquitous vision system as a multiagent system. Thus, each vision sensor can be regarded as an agent (vision agent). Each vision agent independently performs exact segmentation for a target by color and motion information, visual tracking for multiple targets in real-time, and location estimation by a simple perspective transform. Matching problem for the identity of a target during handover between vision agents is solved by the Identified Contract Net (ICN) protocol implemented for the protocol-based approach. The protocol-based approach by the ICN protocol is independent of the number of vision agents and moreover the approach doesn't need calibration and overlapped region between vision agents. Therefore, the ICN protocol raises speed, scalability, and modularity of the system. The protocol-based approach was successfully applied for our ubiquitous vision system and operated well through several experiments.
Measurements of solar wind speed near the Sun (< 0.1 AU) are important for understanding acceleration mechanism of solar wind as well as space weather predictions, but hard to directly measure them. For the first time, we provide 2D solar wind speed maps in the LASCO field of view using three consecutive days data. By applying the Fourier convolution and inverse Fourier transform, we decompose the 3D intensity data (r, PA, t) into the 4D one (r, PA, t, v). Then, we take the weighted mean along speed to determine the solar wind speeds that gives V(r, PA, t) in every 30 min. The estimated radial speeds are consistent with those given by an artificial flow and plasma blobs. We find that the estimated speeds are moderately correlated with those from slow CMEs and those from IPS observations. A comparison of yearly solar wind speed maps in 2000 and 2009 shows that they have very remarkable differences: azimuthally uniform distribution in 2000 and bi-modal distribution (high speed near the poles and low speed near the equator) in 2009.
In this paper, the wall following navigation algorithm of the mobile robot using a mono vision system is described. The key points of the mobile robot navigation system are effective acquisition of the environmental information and fast recognition of the robot position. Also, from this information, the mobile robot should be appropriately controlled to follow a desired path. For the recognition of the relative position and orientation of the robot to the wall, the features of the corridor structure are extracted using the mono vision system, then the relative position, the offset distance and steering angle of the robot from the wall, is derived for a simple corridor geometry. For the alleviation of the computation burden of the image processing, the Kalman filter is used to reduce search region in the image space for line detection. Next, the robot is controlled by this information to follow the desired path. The wall following control scheme by the PD control scheme is composed of two control parts, the approaching control and the orientation control, and each control is performed by steering and forward-driving motion of the robot. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, the real time navigation experiments are performed. Through the result of the experiments, the effectiveness and flexibility of the suggested algorithm are verified in comparison with a pure encoder-guided mobile robot navigation system.
The goal of the proposed Intelligent Assisting System - IAS is to assist human operators in an intelligent way, while leaving decision and goal planning instances for the human. To realize the IAS the very important issue of manipulation skill identification and analysis has to be solved, which then is stored in a Skill Data Base. Using this data base the IAS is able to perform complex manipulations on the motion control level and to assist the human operator flexibly. We propose a model for manipulation skill based on the dynamics of the grip transformation matrix, which describes the dynamic transformation between object space and finger joint space. Interaction with a virtual world simulator allows the calculation and feedback of appropriate forces through controlled actuators of the sensor glove with 10 degrees-of-freedom. To solve the sensor glove calibration problem, we learn the nonlinear calibration mapping by an artificial neural network(ANN). In this paper we also describe the experimental system setup of the skill acquisition and transfer system as a first approach to the IAS. Some simple manipulation examples and simulation results show the feasibility of the proposed manipulation skill model.
In this study, optimal distribution of springs which supports a cantilever beam is investigated to minimize two objective functions defined. The optimal size and location of the springs are ascertained to minimize the tip deflection of the cantilever beam. Afterwards, the optimization problem of springs is set up to minimize the tip absolute acceleration of the beam. The Fourier Transform is applied on the equation of motion and the response of the structure is defined in terms of transfer functions. By using any structural mode, the proposed method is applied to find optimal stiffness and location of springs which supports a cantilever beam. The stiffness coefficients of springs are chosen as the design variables. There is an active constraint on the sum of the stiffness coefficients and there are passive constraints on the upper and lower bounds of the stiffness coefficients. Optimality criteria are derived by using the Lagrange Multipliers. Gradient information required for solution of the optimization problem is analytically derived. Optimal designs obtained are compared with the uniform design in terms of frequency responses and time response. Numerical results show that the proposed method is considerably effective to determine optimal stiffness coefficients and locations of the springs.
In this study, low- and high-frequency structure behaviors were identified and a systematic analysis procedure was proposed using noisy GPS data from a 165-m-high tower in ${\dot{I}}stanbul$, Turkey. The raw GPS data contained long- and short-periodic position changes and noisy signals at different frequencies. To extract the significant results from this complex dataset, the general structure and components of the GPS signal were modeled and analyzed in the time and frequency domains. Uncontrolled jumps and deviations involving the signal in the time domain were pre-filtered. Then, the signal was converted to the frequency domain after applying low- and high-pass filters, and the frequency and periodic component values were calculated. The spectrum of the tower motion obtained from the filtered GPS data had dominant peaks at a low frequency of $1.15572{\times}10-4Hz$ and a high frequency of 0.16624 Hz, consistent with two equivalent GPS datasets. Then, the signal was reconstructed using inverse Fourier transform with the dominant low frequency values to obtain filtered and interpretable clean signals. With the proposed sequence, processing of noisy data collected from the GPS receivers mounted very close to the structure is effective in revealing the basic behaviors and features of buildings.
A computer-based low back muscle evaluation system was designed to simultaneously acquire, process, display, quantify, and correlate electromyographic(EMG) activity with muscle force, and range of motion(ROM) in the lumbar muscle of human. This integrated multi-channel system was designed around notebook PC. Each channel consisted of a time and frequency domain block, and T-F(time-frequency) domain block. The captured data in each channel was used to display and Quantify : raw EMG, histogram, zero crossing, turn, RMS(root mean square), variance, mean, power spectrum, median frequency, mean frequency, wavelet transform, Wigner-Ville distribution, Choi-Williams distribution, and Cohen-Posch distribution. To evaluate the performance of the designed system, the static and dynamic contraction experiments from lumbar(waist) level of human were done. The experiment performed in five subjects, and various parameters were tested and compared. This system could equally well be modified to allow acquisition, processing, and analysis of EMG signals in other studies and applications.
The nonlinear hydrodynamic forces acting on a two-dimensional circular cylinder, oscillating with large amplitude in the free surface, are calculated by using the Semi-Lagrangian Time-Step-ping Method used by O.M. Faltinsen. In present calculation the position and the potential value of free surface are calculated using the exact kinematic and dynamic free surface boundary condition. At each time step an integral equation is solved to obtain the value of potential and normal velocity along the boundaries, consisting of both the body surface and the free surface. Some effort was devoted to the elimination of instability arising in the range of high frequency. Numerical simulations were performed up to the 3rd or 4th period which seems to be enough for the transient effect to die out. Each harmonic component and time-mean force are obtained by the Fourier transform of forces in time domain. The results are compared with others' experimental and theoretical results. Particularly, the calculation shows the tendency that the acceleration-phase 1st-harmonic component(added mass) increases as the motion amplitude increases and a reverse tendency in the velocity-phase 1st-harmonic component(damping coefficient). The Yamashita's experimental result also shows the same tendency. In general, the present result show relatively good agreement with the Yamashita's experimental result except for the time-mean force.
The hydrodynamic radiation forces acting on a ship travelling in waves have been conventionally treated by strip theories or by direct three dimensional approaches, most of which have been formulated in frequency domain. If the forward speed of a ship varies with time, or if its path is not a straight line, conventional frequency domain analysis can no more be used, and for these cases time domain analysis may be used. In this paper, formulations are made in time domain with applications to some problems the results of which are known in frequency domain. And the results of both domains are compared to show the characteristics and validity of time domain solutions. The radiation forces acting on a three dimensional body within the framework of a linear theory. If the linearity of entire system is assumed, radiation forces due to arbitrary ship motions can be expressed by the convolution integral of the arbitrary motion velocity and the so called impulse response function. Numerical calculations are done for some bodies of simple shapes and Series-60[$C_B=0.7$] ship model. For all cases, integral equation techniques with transient Green's function are used, and velocity or acceleration potentials are obtained as the solution of the integral equations. In liner systems, time domain solutions are related with frequency domain solutions by Fourier transform. Therefore time domain solutions are Fourier transformed by suitable relations and the results are compared with various frequency domain solutions, which show good agreements.
