  • This paper investigates the dynamic behavior of a simply supported viscoelastic plate made of functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforced composite under dynamic loading. Carbon nanotubes are distributed in 5 different shapes: U, V, A, O and X, depending on the shape they form through the thickness of the plate. The displacement fields are derived in the Laplace domain using a higher-order shear deformation theory. Equations of motion are obtained through the application of the energy method and Hamilton's principle. The resulting equations of motion are solved using Navier's method. Transforming the Laplace domain displacements into the time domain involves Durbin's modified inverse Laplace transform. To validate the accuracy of the developed algorithm, a free vibration analysis is conducted for simply supported plate made of functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforced composite and compared against existing literature. Subsequently, a parametric forced vibration analysis considers the influence of various parameters: volume fractions of carbon nanotubes, their distributions, and ratios of instantaneous value to retardation time in the relaxation function, using a linear standard viscoelastic model. In the forced vibration analysis, the dynamic distributed load applied to functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforced composite viscoelastic plate is obtained in terms of double trigonometric series. The study culminates in an examination of maximum displacement, exploring the effects of different carbon nanotube distributions, volume fractions, and ratios of instantaneous value to retardation times in the relaxation function on the amplitudes of maximum displacements.

  • In this paper, we proposed a hardware(H/W) structure which can compress and recontruct the input image in real time operation and implemented it into a FPGA platform using VHDL(VHSIC Hardware Description Language). All the image processing element to process both compression and reconstruction in a FPGA were considered each of them was mapped into a H/W with the efficient structure for FPGA. We used the DWT(discrete wavelet transform) which transforms the data from spatial domain to the frequency domain, because use considered the motion JPEG2000 as the application. The implemented H/W is separated to both the data path part and the control part. The data path part consisted of the image processing blocks and the data processing blocks. The image processing blocks consisted of the DWT Kernel for the filtering by DWT, Quantizer/Huffman Encoder, Inverse Adder/Buffer for adding the low frequency coefficient to the high frequency one in the inverse DWT operation, and Huffman Decoder. Also there existed the interface blocks for communicating with the external application environments and the timing blocks for buffering between the internal blocks. The global operations of the designed H/W are the image compression and the reconstruction, and it is operated by the unit or a field synchronized with the A/D converter. The implemented H/W used the 54%(12943) LAB(Logic Array Block) and 9%(28352) ESB(Embedded System Block) in the APEX20KC EP20K600CB652-7 FPGA chip of ALTERA, and stably operated in the 70MHz clock frequency. So we verified the real time operation. that is. processing 60 fields/sec(30 frames/sec).

  • Motion of object in a video clip often plays an important role in characterizing the content of the clip. A number of methods have been developed to analyze and retrieve video contents using motion information. However, most of these methods focused more on the analysis of direction or trajectory of motion but less on the analysis of the movement of an object itself. In this paper, we propose the shape sequence descriptor to describe and compare the movement based on the shape deformation caused by object motion along the time. A movement information is first represented a sequence of 2D shape of object extracted from input image sequence, and then 2D shape information is converted 1D shape feature using the shape descriptor. The shape sequence descriptor is obtained from the shape descriptor sequence by frequency transform along the time. Our experiment results show that the proposed method can be very simple and effective to describe the object movement and can be applicable to semantic applications such as content-based video retrieval and human movement recognition.

  • This research aims to develop an empirical model for simulation of time-varying frequency in earthquake ground motion so as to be used easily in engineering applications. Briefly, 10545 recordings of the Next Generation Attenuation (NGA) global database of accelerograms from shallow crustal earthquakes are selected and binned by magnitude, distance and site condition. Then the wavelet spectrum of each acceleration record is calculated by using one-dimensional continuous wavelet transform, and the frequencies corresponding to the maximum values of the wavelet spectrum at a series of sampling time, named predominant frequencies, are extracted to analyze the variation of frequency content of seismic ground motions in time. And the time-variation of the predominant frequencies of 178 magnitude-distance-site bins for different directions are obtained by calculating the mean square root of predominant frequencies within a bin. The exponential trigonometric function is then use to fit the data, which describes the predominant frequency of ground-motion as a function of time with model parameters given in tables for different magnitude, distance, site conditions and direction. Finally, a practical frequency-dependent amplitude envelope function is developed based on the time-varying frequency derived in this paper, which has clear statistical parameters and can emphasize the effect of low-frequency components on later seismic action. The results illustrate that the time-varying predominant frequency can preferably reflect the non-stationarity of the frequency content in earthquake ground motions and that empirical models given in this paper facilitates the simulation of ground motions.

  • Inthis paper, we investigate the compatible coding technique, which receives much interest ever since the introduction of HDTV. First, attempts have been made to analyze the theoretical transform coding gains for various hierarchical decomposition techniques, namely subband, pyramid and DCT-based decomposition techniques. It is shown that the spatical domain techniques proide higher transform coding gains than the DCT-based coding technique. Secondly, we compare the performance of these spatial domain techniques, in terms of the PSNR versus various rate allocations to each layer. Based on these analyses, it is believed that the pyramid decomposition is more appropriate for the compatible coding. Also in this paper, we propose a hybrid prediction pyramid coding technique, by combining the spatio-temporal prediction in MPEG-2[3] and the adaptive MC(Motion Compensation)[1]. In the proposed coding technigue, we also employ an adaptive DCT coefficient scanning technique to exploit the direction information of the 2nd-layer signal. Through computer simulations, the proposed hybrid prediction with adaptive scanning technuque shows the PSNR improvement, by about 0.46-1.78dB at low 1st-layer rate(about 0.1bpp) over the adaptive MC[1], and by about 0.33-0.63dB at high 1st-layer rate (about 0.32-0.43bpp) over the spatio-temporal prediction[3].

  • Gait Recognition is a new technique to identify the people by the way they walk. Human gait is a spatio-temporal phenomenon that typifies the motion characteristics of an individual. The proposed method makes a simple but efficient attempt to gait recognition. For each video file, spatial silhouettes of a walker are extracted by an improved background subtraction procedure using Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM). Here GMM is used as a parametric probability density function represented as a weighted sum of Gaussian component densities. Then, the relevant features are extracted from the silhouette tracked from the given video file using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method. The Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis (FLDA) classifier is used in the classification of dimensional reduced image derived by the PCA method for gait recognition. Although gait images can be easily acquired, the gait recognition is affected by clothes, shoes, carrying status and specific physical condition of an individual. To overcome this problem, it is combined with footprint as a multimodal biometric system. The minutiae is extracted from the footprint and then fused with silhouette image using the Discrete Stationary Wavelet Transform (DSWT). The experimental result shows that the efficiency of proposed fusion algorithm works well and attains better result while comparing with other fusion schemes.

  • There have been many demands for th ereal-time image compression. The image compression systems have a wide range of applications. However, real-time encoding is hard to implement because it needs a large amount of computations. In particular, the discrete cosine transform (DCT) and motion estimatio require a large number of arithmetic oeprations compared to other algorithms in MPEG-2. The conventional fasdt DCT algorithms have focused on the reduction of the number of additions more cycles and more expense in realization. Because TMS320C80 has special structure, new approach for implementation of DCT is suggested. The selection of adaptive algorithm and optimization is requried TMS320C80 are analyzed an dsome adaptive DCT algorithms are selected. The DCT algorithms are optimized and implemented. Chens and lees DCT algorithms among various fast algorithms are selected because 1-D approach is effective in the view of th einternal structure of TMS320C80. According to the simulation result, Lees algorithm is more effective in speed and has little difference in precision. On the basis of the result, the possibility of DCT implementation for real-time MPEG-2 system is verified and the required number of the processor, called advanced DSP, is decided for real-time MPEG-2 encoding and decoding.

  • The dynamic instability of snapping phenomena has been studied by many researchers. Few papers deal with dynamic buckling under loads with periodic characteristics, and the behavior under periodic excitations is expected to be different from behavior under STEP excitations. We investigate the fundamental mechanisms of the dynamic instability when the sinusoidally shaped arch structures are subjected to sinusoidally distributed excitations with pin-ends. The mechanisms of dynamic indirect snapping of shallow arches are especially investigated under not only STEP function excitations but also under sinusoidal harmonic excitations, applied i the up-and-down direction. The dynamic nonlinear responses are obtained by the numerical integration of the geometrically nonlinear equation of motion. And using this analyze characteristics of the dynamic instability through the running response spectrum by FFT(Fast Fourier Transform).
