This paper provides the structure of a Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) based simulation method and its validation results for the ship motion problem. The motion information of the hull computed from the equations of motion is considered in the momentum equations as the relative fluid motions with respect to a non-inertial coordinates system. A finite volume method is used to solve the governing equations, while the free surface is captured by using a two-phase level-set method and the realizable k-${\varepsilon}$ model is used for turbulence closure. For the validation of the present numerical approach, the numerical results of the resistance and motion tests for DTMB 5415 at two ship speeds are compared against available experimental data.

Analysis: of the propulsion performance considering ship motion in waves is an important factor for the efficient operation of a ship. The interaction between the propeller and the free surface due to the ship motion in waves has a significant influence on the propulsion performance. However, most recent studies regarding the hydrodynamic performance of ships in waves focus on the added resistance, and experimental and numerical data on the propulsion performance considering the ship motion in waves are very rare. In this study, a numerical investigation of the nominal wake in regular head waves is performed for a KVLCC2 model ship for the fully-loaded condition. Phase-averaged wake fields for one period are compared with experimental data measured using Stereo PIV, showing good agreement. The effect of the ship motion on the characteristics of the wake field and the axial velocity in the propeller plane are investigated while varying the wave length.

Based on the equivalent uniform stress concept Presented by Seed and Idriss, sinusoidal cyclic loads which simplified earthquake loads have been applied in evaluating the liquefaction resistance strength experimentally. However, the liquefaction resistance strength of soil based on the equivalent uniform stress concept can not exactly reflect the dynamic characteristics of the irregular earthquake motion. The liquefaction assessment method which was invented by using the equivalent uniform stress concept is suitable for the severe earthquake region such as Japan or USA, so the proper method to Korea is needed. In this study, estimation of the resistance to liquefaction was conducted by applying real earthquake loading to the cyclic triaxial test. From the test results, the characteristics of the fine sand under moderate earthquake were analyzed and compared with the results under strong earthquakes. Typically real earthquake loads used in this study are divided into two types - impact type and vibration type. Furthermore, results of the liquefaction resistance strength based on the equivalent uniform stress concept and tile concept using real earthquake loading were compared.

The purpose of this study is to propose a new dynamic model of wheels and agricultural tractors through verification of the existence of " lift resistance " and "perpendicular adhesion" which also can be called " contra-retractive adhesion". The existence of these forces was proved through experiments including the development of a sensor which can measure the forces acting on a wheel accurately. Consequently " perpendicular adhesion ratio" which is defined as the ratio of the perpendicular adhesion to the distributed load was observed to be in the range of 0.05 to 0.3. This means the influence of the " lift resistance " is comparable to that of motion resistance in wheel dynamics. The perpendicular adhesion ratio was observed to decrease logarithmically with the increase of ground contact pressure, and to increase linearly with increase of the travel speed of the wheel . Some examples to express the new dynamic model compared to the conventional dynamics are explained.

Recently, the design of commercial ships with less green-house gas is one of great interests in naval architecture fields. Ship designers are asked to find optimum hull forms with minimum resistance in ocean waves. The accurate computation of added resistance, therefore, is getting more important for the prediction of power increase in random ocean waves. This study focuses on the numerical computation of added resistance on ships with Ax-bow shapes which are designed to reduce added resistance. To this end, the time-domain Rankine panel methods based on weakly-nonlinear and weak-scatterer approaches are applied, which can reflect the influence of above-still-water bow shape. As computational models, KCS and KVLCC2 hull forms are considered. Each ship is combined with the three types of Ax-bow shape, and computational results are compared each other.

An estimation algorithm for vehicle driving load has been proposed in this paper. Driving load is an important factor in a vehicle's longitudinal motion control. An approach using an observer is introduced to estimate driving load based on inexpensive RPM sensors currently being used in production vehicles. Also, a torque estimation technique using nonlinear characteristic functions has been incorporated in this estimation algorithm. Using a nonlinear full vehicle simulation model, we study the effect of the driving load on longitudinal vehicle motion, and the performance of the estimation algorithm has been evaluated. The proposed estimation algorithm has good performance and robustness over uncertainties in the system parameters. An accurate estimate of the driving load can be very helpful in the development of advance vehicle control systems such as intelligent cruise control systems, CW/CA systems and smooth shift control systems.

Earthquakes can lead to substantial damage to buildings, with long-period ground motion being particularly destructive. The design of high-performance building structures has become a prominent focus of research. The double-story isolated structure is a novel type of isolated structure developed from base isolated structure. To delve deeper into the building performance of double-story isolated structures, the double-story isolated structure was constructed with the upper isolated layer located in different layers, alongside a base isolated structure for comparative analysis. Nonlinear elastoplastic analyses were conducted on these structures using different ground motion inputs, including ordinary ground motion, near-field impulsive ground motion, and far-field harmonic ground motion. The results demonstrate that the double-story isolated structure can extend the structural period further than the base isolated structure under three types of ground motions. The double-story isolated structure exhibits lower base shear, inter-story displacement, base isolated layer displacement, story shear, and maximum acceleration of the top layer, compared to the base isolated structure. In addition, the double-story isolated structure generates fewer plastic hinges in the frame, causes less damage to the core tube, and experiences smaller overturning moments, demonstrating excellent resistance to overturning and a shock-absorbing effect. As the upper isolated layer is positioned higher, the compressive stress on the isolated bearings of the upper isolated layer in the double-story isolated structure gradually decreases. Moreover, the compressive stress on the isolated bearings of the base isolated layer is lower compared to that of the base isolated structure. However, the shock-absorbing capacity of the double-story isolated structure is significantly increased when the upper isolated layer is located in the middle and lower section. Notably, in regions exposed to long-period ground motion, a double-story isolated structure can experience greater seismic response and reduced shock-absorbing capacity, which may be detrimental to the structure.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of anterolateral (45$^{\circ}$) and lateral (90$^{\circ}$) direction resistance, with using an elastic band, on the electromyographic(EMG) activity ratio of the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) and the vastus lateralis (VL) during squat exercise. Methods: The study subjects were 19 active people with no history of patellofemoral pain, limitation of range of motion or pain when performing squat exercise. A 'repeated measures within subjects' design was used. The subjects were asked to perform three repetitions of a 90$^{\circ}$ knee flexion squat exercise with anterolateral (45$^{\circ}$) and lateral (90$^{\circ}$) resistance and without resistance, respectively. The EMG activity of the VMO and VL were recorded by surface EMG electrodes and the results were normalized by the % MVIC value. Results: Repeated measures ANOVA's revealed that squat exercise with anterolateral (45$^{\circ}$) resistance produced significantly greater VMO/VL EMG activity ratio than that with lateral (90$^{\circ}$) resistance and without resistance (p=.013). Yet the result of contrast testing revealed that squat exercise with lateral (90$^{\circ}$) resistance showed no significant difference of the VMO/VL EMG activity ratio, as compared with squat exercise without resistance (p>0.05). Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that squat exercise combining anterolateral (45$^{\circ}$) resistance can contribute positively to the patients with patellofemoral pain as they increase the VMO/VL EMG activity ratio.
This study investigated the steady-flow effects present in the numerical computation of the resistance added to a ship in waves. For a ship advancing in the forward direction, a time-domain 3D Rankine panel method is applied to solve the ship motion problem, and the added resistance due to waves is calculated using a near-field method, with the direct integration of the second-order pressure on the hull surface. In the linear potential theory, the steady flow is approximated by the basis potential of a uniform flow or double-body flow in order to linearize the boundary conditions. By applying these two different linearization schemes, the coupling effects between steady and unsteady solutions were examined. Furthermore, in order to analyze the steady-flow effects on the hull geometry, the computation results for two realistic hull forms, a KVLCC2 tanker and DTC containership, were compared. In particular, the mj term, which represents the coupling effects under the body boundary condition, was evaluated considering the geometry of a non-wall-sided ship. Lastly, the characteristics of the linearization schemes were examined in relation to the disturbed waves around a ship and the components of added resistance.

In this study, uncertainty analysis based on ITTC(International Towing Tank Conference) Recommended Procedures is carried out in the towing-tank experiment for motion responses and added resistance. The experiment was conducted for KVLCC2 model in head sea condition. The heave, pitch and added resistance were measured in different wave conditions, and the measurement was repeated up to maximum 15 times in each wave condition in order to observe the uncertainty of measured data. The uncertainty analysis was carried out by adopting the ISO-GUM(International Organization for Standardization, Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurements) method recommended by ITTC. This paper describes the details about the analysis method, uncertainty and the measured uncertainty for each source. The uncertainty analysis results are summarized as a tabular form. To validate the accuracy of the present measurement, the experimental results are compared with the results of numerical computation and other experiment. From the present uncertainty analysis, the main sources of uncertainty are identified, which can be very useful to improve the accuracy for added resistance experiment.
