  • Background: It is reported that the proprioceptive sensation of patients with neck pain is reduced, and neck sensory-motor control training using visual feedback is reported to be effective. Objects: The purpose of this study is to investigate how sensorimotor control training for the cervical spine affects pain, function, and psychosocial status in patients with chronic cervical pain. Methods: The subjects consisted of 36 adults (male: 15, female: 21) who had experienced cervical spine pain for more than 6 weeks. An exercise program composed of cervical stabilization exercise (10 minutes), electrotherapy (10 minutes), manual therapy (10 minutes), and cervical sensorimotor control training (10 minutes) was implemented for both the experimental and the control groups. The cervical range of motion (CROM) and head repositioning accuracy were assessed using a CROM device. In the experimental group, the subjects wore a laser device on the head to provide visual feedback while following pictures in front of their eyes; whereas, in the control group, the subjects had the same training of following pictures without the laser device. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in pain, dysfunction, range of motion, or psychosocial status; however, post-test results showed significant decreases after 2 weeks and 4 weeks compared to baseline (p < 0.01), and after 4 weeks compared to after 2 weeks (p < 0.01). The cervical joint position sense differed significantly between the two groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: In this study, visual feedback enhanced proprioception in the cervical spine, resulting in improved cervical joint position sense. On the other hand, there were no significant effects on pain, dysfunction, range of motion, or psychosocial status.

  • In the present study, we investigated development of verb inflections or endings in 3- to 5-year old Korean-speaking children using 28 action verbs for both comprehension and production tasks. For each verb, a l0-second long motion picture and a sheet of paper with three random-ordered color pictures representing 'before, in the middle of, at the end of' the action were generated. A past tense inflection' -et ta,' two present progressive verb endings '-enta' & '-ko itta.' a future tense ending '-elyeko hanta' were tested. In the comprehension task, children were asked to point to a picture correctly representing the tense of a presented verb. In the production task, children were asked to produce a verb with correctly marking the tense of a presented picture. The order of the two tasks were counterbalanced across the children, and the motion pictures were only presented in the first task. Across the ages, the performance accuracies on both comprehension and production tasks were the highest for the past tense marking followed by two present progressive and future tense markings. For each verb endings, the changes of accuracies across ages were analyzed in both tasks. The types of errors for production tasks were also reported.

  • In this paper, a new nonlinear predictor using general regression neural network(GRNN) is proposed for the subband coding of moving pictures. The performance of a proposed nonlinear predictor is compared with BMA(Block Match Algorithm), the most conventional motion estimation technique. As a result, the nonlinear predictor using GRNN can predict well more 2-3dB than BMA. Specially, because of having a clustering process and smoothing noise signals, this predictor well preserves edges in frames after predicting the subband signal. This result is important with respect of human visual system and is excellent performance for the subband coding of moving pictures.

  • Currently, H.264/AVC is used in many multimedia applications. Also, The MPEG-2 main profile which supports B pictures for bi-directional motion prediction is widely used in applications such as HDTV and DVD’s. Therefore, transcoding the MPEG-2 main profile to the H.264/AVC baseline is necessary for universal multimedia access. In this transcoding architecture including the GOP structure conversion, the proposed algorithms adopt the adaptive search range selection through the linearity test of a predictive motion vector and adaptive mode selection using the reference region complexity information. The proposed algorithms extremely reduce the computational complexity while maintaining the video quality.

  • This study takes aim at finding how effective the usage of 'Read to Dogs' is for self-respect and reading improvement of elementary school students. For this, this study was compared and analyzed with pretest and posttest using 'tree pictures' of HTP and 'family pictures with motion' of KFD through performing, surveying, and art-therapy treatments. The result of this study showed that reading program using a reading -assistance- dog has a good effect on self-respect of children with reading inactivity. Also, this result will be used as useful information in developing and operating programs for children with reading inactivity in libraries and schools.

  • This paper proposes a fast motion estimation method which can reduce the computational complexity of HEVC encoding process. While the previous method determines its search range based on a distance between a current and a reference pictures to accelerate the time-consuming motion estimation, the proposed method adaptively sets the search range according to motion vector difference between prediction units. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves about 10.7% of reduction in processing time of motion estimation under the random access configuration whereas its coding efficiency loss is less than 0.1%.

  • In assessing risks related to working posture, pictures of postures are taken from various directions, which can be a source of observation error. Joint postures of the neck, lower back, knee, shoulder, and elbow were taken from 7 different viewing angles and 19 observers estimated joint angles by observing the pictures in 2-dimensional display. The joint angles were also measured using an optoelectronic motion measurement system. The estimation error increased as the viewing angle varies from the right side of the human body, but the patterns differ according to which joint angles were being observed. Guidelines to increase the validity of observation of joint angles were presented based on the results. In general, it is recommended to maintain the viewing angle within 20 degrees from the right side of the human body, while different ranges of viewing angle are recommended for each joint angle.

  • In this study, the performance of ATM multiplexer with MPEG(Motion Pictures Experts Group) video is analyzed by considering the effect of the MPEG GOP(Group of Pictures) structure. By assuming that frame starting times are synchronized, aggregated traffics are considered to be transmitted at the beginning of each frame time units. The aggregated number of cells generated during a frame time unit is, therefore, derived from distributions of individual sources. The stationary probability of buffer occupancy can be easily obtained by using a property of the periodicity of aggregated traffics. Simulation approach is also used to determine the traffic load for a given probability of satisfying QoS(Quality of Service).

  • A set of modal parameters of a stay-cable have been extracted from a moving picture captured by a digital camera supported by shaking hands. It is hard to identify the center of targets attached on the cable surface from the blurred cable motion image, because of the high speed motion of cable, low sampling frequency of camera, and the shaking effect of camera. This study proposes a multi-template matching algorithm to resolve such difficulties. In addition, a sensitivity-based system identification algorithm is introduced to extract the natural frequencies and damping ratios from the ambient cable vibration data. Three sets of vibration tests are conducted to examine the validity of the proposed algorithms. The results show that the proposed technique is pretty feasible for extracting modal parameters from the severely shaking motion pictures.
