  • The function of music in a motion picture ranges widely from supporting the storyline to being the main storyline delivering the major plots. This trend and can be seen in recently produced films, advertising as well as in music videos. Many attempts were made to express music visually in the past. But it was through Disney's creative production, "Fantasia", that such attempts became a reality in a motion picture. This paper will look into the difference between the "Fantasia" and "Fantasia 2000" through a comparative analysis of the correlation between the musical element and the storyline of the 2 Disney animation movies. The most distinct difference is that the "Fantasia" has a storyline that is faithful to the original interpretation of the true meaning of the music, while, on the other hand, the "Fantasia 2000" has a storyline that endeavors to express the special features of the overall sound of individual pieces as best as possible. And the differences between the two animations, thus compiled, is hoped to facilitate and enhance a better understanding of the two Disney's finest animations.

  • Digital cinema based on digital master distribution increases with stereoscopic film as the center. DCI specification V1.0 announced at 2004, it considerates stereoscopic film screening. And now, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers is establishing a task force to define the standards of a stereoscopic contents viewed in the home. Today, most Hollywood commercial stereoscopic film features animation using computer graphic. However, considering film making characteristic, stereoscopic digital cinema is required shooting in real world and editing, screening. This paper presents possibility of stereoscopic examination at NLE in the stereoscopic workflow. And we will propose new stereoscopic digital cinema workflow to apply the stereoscopic examination. Based on experimental results, the 3D ready television using 120Hz has some obstacles for contents editing, but most domestic stereoscopic monitor using circular polarization is possible for successful editing.

  • In this paper, a real-time operating Motion Picture Experts Group-1 (MPEG-1) audio encoder system is implemented using a TMS320C31 Digital Signal Processor (DSP) chip. The basic operation of the MPEG-1 audio encoder algorithm based on audio layer-2 and psychoacoustic model-1 is first verified by C-language. It is then realized using the Texas Instruments (Tl) assembly in order to reduce the overall execution time. Finally, the actual BSP circuit board for the encoder system is designed and implemented. In the system, the side-modules such as the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) control, the input/output (I/O) control, the bit-stream transmission from the DSP board to the PC and so on, are utilized with a field programmable gate array (FPGA) using very high speed hardware description language (VHDL) codes. The complete encoder system is able to process the stereo audio signal in real-time at the sampling frequency 48 kHz, and produces the encoded bit-stream with the bit-rate 192 kbps. The real-time operation capability of the encoder system and the good quality of the decoded sound are also confirmed using various types of actual stereo audio signals.

  • Interest has increased in academic research regarding key factors that drive box-office success as well as the ability to predict the box-office success of a movie from a commercial perspective. This study analyzed the relationship between key success factors of a movie and box office records based on movies released in 2010 in Korea. At the pre-production investment decision-making stage, the movie genre, motion picture rating, director power, and actor power were statistically significant. At the stage of distribution decision-making process after movie production, among other factors, the influence of star actors, number of screens, power of distributors, and social media turned out to be statistically significant. We verified movie success factors through the application of a Multinomial Logit Model that used the concept of choice probabilities. The Multinomial Logit Model resulted in a higher level of accuracy in predicting box-office success compared to the Artificial Neural Network and Discriminant Analysis.

  • The point of impact, the shot group, and the flight traces depend on the combination of unique features which decide moving traces of the arrow (paradox of the archer, length of the arrow shaft, weight, angle of the feather, and spline of the arrow shaft). The more dense the impact points in the shot group and the earlier elimination of paradox of the archer, the higher assessment is given for the product. However, there is no way to objectively assess the efficiency and quality of the arrow, and there is no numeric data to be used as the basis for comparison with other products. Although capturing the images of flying arrow using a high-speed motion picture camera is possible, we are limited to observation from specific view angle only. Hence, the criteria for efficiency and quality assessment are mostly based on subjective opinions of experts or hunters, or review on consumers' remarks. In this paper, we propose a hardware composition that are based on three detection frames consisting of line lasers and photo diode arrays without the high-speed motion picture camera. Predicated on measured coordinates data, a nobel method for the archer's paradox measurement, a key parameter that determine the arrow's trajectory, and corresponding numerical analysis model is proposed.

  • This study shed light on searching spatial location pattern of movie theaters by operating screens in theater as proxy variable to find spillover effects and spatial determinants. After taking procedure to find spatial spillover effect by GIS 3D analyst, movie theaters in Seoul metropolitan area are formed in four categorized regions, such as Kangbuk, Kangnam, Kangseo, and Kangdong. Regions which have larger number of screens than others show that they affect to relevant regions directly. In addition, this study analyzes that people have tendencies to visit movie theater while they use other similar facilities such as music, publishing, and public performance facilities. Therefore, trend of agglomeration of similar enterprise including motion picture industry has a spillover effect and economy of scale when they are gathered in specific regions which are specialized as certain usage.

  • The conventional block-based motion prediction suffers, especially in low bit-rate video application, from shortcomings such as blocking artifacts of motion field and unstable motion estimation. To overcome the deficiency, this paper proposes one method of adopting a new motion compensation scheme based on the irregular triangular mesh structure while keeping the current block-based DCT coding structure of H.263 as much as possible. To represent the reconstructed previous frame using minimal number of control points, the proposed method designs content-adaptive irregular triangular meshes, and then, estimate the motion vector of each control point using the affine transformation-based matching. The predicted current frame is obtained by applying the affine transformation to each triangular mesh. Experiment with the several real video sequences shows improvement both in objective and subjective picture quality over the conventional block-based H.263 method.

  • Multi-view video is obtained by capturing one three-dimensional scene with many cameras at different positions. The computational complexity of multi view video coding increases in proportion to the number of cameras. To reduce computational complexity and maintain the image quality, improved prediction structure and motion estimation method is proposed in this paper. The proposed prediction structure exploits an average distance between the current picture and its reference pictures. The proposed prediction structure divides every GOP into several groups to decide the maximum index of hierarchical B layer and the number of pictures of each B layer. And the proposed motion estimation method uses a hierarchical search strategy. This strategy method consists of modified diamond search pattern, progressive diamond search pattern and modified raster search pattern. Experiment results show that the complexity reduction of the proposed prediction structure and motion estimation method over JMVC (Joint Multiview Video Coding) reference model using hierarchical B pictures of Fraunhofer-HHI and TZ search method can be up to 40~70% while maintaining similar video quality and bit rates.

  • A new stereoscopic codec. structure using MPEG-2 multiview profile is presented in this paper. In the suggested codec., the left image is coded with motion estimation in the base layer and the right image is coded with disparity estimation in the enhancement layer. Since it is possible to calculate rough motion of the right image sequence with disparity and motion of the left image sequence, motion compensation of the enhancement layer is performed without motion estimation. To apply this mathod to MVP codec., the prediction mode of base layer and enhancement layer is restricted, and B picture mode in the base layer is removed. Since the proposed codec. does not perform motion estimation in the enhancement layer encoding and prediction mode of base layer is restricted, it's structure is simple and reduces the encoding time. We compared the SNR of encoded image with three different structured codec., and the experimental results show suggested codec. have comparable result.

  • This paper introduces a new technique for block is matching motion estimation. Since the temporal correlation of the image sequence, the motion vector of a block is highly related to the motion vector of the same coordinate block in the previous image frame. If we can obtain useful and enough information from the motion vector of the same coordinate block of the previous frame, the total number of search points used to find the motion vector of the current block may be reduced significantly. Using that idea, an efficient predicted direction search algorithm (PDSA) for block matching algorithm is proposed. Based on the direction of the blocks of the two successive previous frames, if the direction of the to successive blocks is same, the first search point of the proposed PDSA is moved two pixels to the direction of the block. The searching process after moving the first search point is processed according to the fixed search patterns. Otherwise, full search is performed with search area $\pm$2. Simulation results show that PSNR values are improved up to the 3.4dB as depend on the image sequences and improved about 1.5dB on an average. Search times are reduced about 20% than the other fast search algorithms. Simulation results also show that the performance of the PDSA scheme gives better subjective picture quality than the other fast search algorithms and is closer to that of the FS(Full Search) algorithm.
