This paper is about motion gesture recognition system, and proposes the following improvement to the flaws of the current system: a motion gesture recognition system and such algorithm that uses the video image of the entire hand and reading its motion gesture to advance the accuracy of recognition. The motion gesture recognition system includes, an image capturing unit that captures and obtains the images of the area applicable for gesture reading, a motion extraction unit that extracts the motion area of the image, and a hand gesture recognition unit that read the motion gestures of the extracted area. The proposed application of the motion gesture algorithm achieves 20% improvement compared to that of the current system.
In this paper, we present a CNN-based gesture recognition approach which reduces the memory burden of input data. Most of the neural network-based gesture recognition methods have used a sequence of frame images as input data, which cause a memory burden problem. We use a motion history image in order to define a meaningful gesture. The motion history image is a grayscale image into which the temporal motion information is collapsed by synthesizing silhouette images of a user during the period of one meaningful gesture. In this paper, we first summarize the previous traditional approaches and neural network-based approaches for gesture recognition. Then we explain the data preprocessing procedure for making the motion history image and the neural network architecture with three convolution layers for recognizing the meaningful gestures. In the experiments, we trained five types of gestures, namely those for charging power, shooting left, shooting right, kicking left, and kicking right. The accuracy of gesture recognition was measured by adjusting the number of filters in each layer in the proposed network. We use a grayscale image with 240 × 320 resolution which defines one meaningful gesture and achieved a gesture recognition accuracy of 98.24%.
We introduce a vision-based hand gesture recognition fer understanding musical time and patterns without extra special devices. We suggest a simple and reliable vision-based hand gesture recognition having two features First, the motion-direction code is proposed, which is a quantized code for motion directions. Second, the conducting feature point (CFP) where the point of sudden motion changes is also proposed. The proposed hand gesture recognition system extracts the human hand region by segmenting the depth information generated by stereo matching of image sequences. And then, it follows the motion of the center of the gravity(COG) of the extracted hand region and generates the gesture features such as CFP and the direction-code finally, we obtain the current timing pattern of beat and tempo of the playing music. The experimental results on the test data set show that the musical time pattern and tempo recognition rate is over 86.42% for the motion histogram matching, and 79.75% fer the CFP tracking only.
Hand motion classification problem is considered as basis for sign or gesture recognition. We promote optical flow as main feature extracted from images sequences to simultaneously segment the motion's area by its magnitude and characterize the motion' s directions by its orientation. We manage the flow orientation histogram as motion descriptor. A motion is encoded by concatenating the flow orientation histogram from several frames. We utilize simple histogram matching to classify the motion sequences. Attempted experiments show the feasibility of our method for hand motion localization and classification.
In this paper, we propose the non-contact gesture recognition system and algorithm using proximity-based sensors. The system uses four IR receiving photodiode embedded on a single chip and an IR LED for small area. The goal of this paper is to use the proposed algorithm to solve the problem associated with bringing the four IR receivers close to each other and to implement a gesture sensor capable of recognizing eight directional gestures from a distance of 10cm and above. The proposed system was implemented on a FPGA board using Verilog HDL with Android host board. As a result of the implementation, a 2-D swipe gesture of fingers and palms of 3cm and 15cm width was recognized, and a recognition rate of more than 97% was achieved under various conditions. The proposed system is a low-power and non-contact HMI system that recognizes a simple but accurate motion. It can be used as an auxiliary interface to use simple functions such as calls, music, and games for portable devices using batteries.
Objective: This study presents the effect of visual feedback on one-hand gesture performance in vision-based gesture recognition system when people use gestures to control a screen device remotely. Backgroud: gesture interaction receives growing attention because it uses advanced sensor technology and it allows users natural interaction using their own body motion. In generating motion, visual feedback has been to considered critical factor affect speed and accuracy. Method: three types of visual feedback(arrow, star, and animation) were selected and 20 gestures were listed. 12 participants perform each 20 gestures while given 3 types of visual feedback in turn. Results: People made longer hand trace and take longer time to make a gesture when they were given arrow shape feedback than star-shape feedback. The animation type feedback was most preferred. Conclusion: The type of visual feedback showed statistically significant effect on the length of hand trace, elapsed time, and speed of motion in performing a gesture. Application: This study could be applied to any device that needs visual feedback for device control. A big feedback generate shorter length of motion trace, less time, faster than smaller one when people performs gestures to control a device. So the big size of visual feedback would be recommended for a situation requiring fast actions. On the other hand, the smaller visual feedback would be recommended for a situation requiring elaborated actions.
In this paper, we designed HW / SW interfaces for processing the signals of capacitive sensors like Electric Potential Sensor (EPS) to detect the surrounding electric field disturbance as feature signals in motion recognition systems. We implemented a smart light control system with those interfaces. In the system, the on/off switch and brightness adjustment are controlled by hand gestures using the designed and fabricated interface circuits. PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signals of the controller with a driver IC are used to drive the LED and to control the brightness and on/off operation. Using the hand-gesture signals obtained through EPS sensors and the interface HW/SW, we can not only construct a gesture instructing system but also accomplish the faster recognition speed by developing dedicated interface hardware including control circuitry. Finally, using the proposed hand-gesture recognition and signal processing methods, the light control module was also designed and implemented. The experimental result shows that the smart light control system can control the LED module properly by accurate motion detection and gesture classification.
As rapid development of new hardware control interface technology, new concepts have been being proposed and emerged. In this paper, a new approach based on leap motion system is proposed. While we employ a position information from sensor, the hand gesture recognition is suggested with the pre-defined patterns. To do this, we design a recognition algorithm with hand gesture and finger patterns. We apply the proposed scheme to 3-dimensional avatar controling and editing software tool for making animation in the cyber space as a representative application. This proposed algorithm can be used to control computer systems in medical treatment, game, education and other various areas.
In this paper, we propose a real-time hand gesture recognition algorithm to eliminate the inconvenience of using hand controllers in VR applications. The user's 3D hand coordinate information is detected by leap motion sensor and then the coordinates are generated into two dimensional image. We classify hand gestures in real-time by learning the imaged 3D hand coordinate information through SSD(Single Shot multibox Detector) model which is one of CNN(Convolutional Neural Networks) models. We propose to use all 3 channels rather than only one channel. A sliding window technique is also proposed to recognize the gesture in real time when the user actually makes a gesture. An experiment was conducted to measure the recognition rate and learning performance of the proposed model. Our proposed model showed 99.88% recognition accuracy and showed higher usability than the existing algorithm.
In this paper, we evaluated prediction accuracy of Euler angle spectrograph classification method using a convolutional neural networks (CNN) for hand gesture recognition in augmented reality (AR) cognitive rehabilitation system based on Leap Motion Controller (LMC). Hand gesture recognition methods using a conventional support vector machine (SVM) show 91.3% accuracy in multiple motions. In this paper, five hand gestures ("Promise", "Bunny", "Close", "Victory", and "Thumb") are selected and measured 100 times for testing the utility of spectral classification techniques. Validation results for the five hand gestures were able to be correctly predicted 100% of the time, indicating superior recognition accuracy than those of conventional SVM methods. The hand motion recognition using CNN meant to be applied more useful to AR cognitive rehabilitation training systems based on LMC than sign language recognition using SVM.
