Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have slow responses, so motion blurs are often perceived in fast moving scenes. To reduce this motion blur, we propose a novel method of robust motion compensated frame interpolation (MCFI) based on bidirectional motion estimation (BME) and weight-overlapped block motion compensation (WOBMC) with variable block sizes. In most MCFI methods, a static block size is used, so some block artefacts and motion blurs are observed. However, the proposed method adjusts motion block sizes and search ranges by comparing matching scores, so the precise motion vectors can be estimated in accordance with motions. In the MCFI, overlapping ranges for WOBMC are also determined by adjusted block sizes, so the accurate MCFI can be performed. In the experimental results, the proposed method strongly reduced motion blurs arisen from large motions, and yielded interpolated images with high visual performance and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR).
In this paper, we propose a new deinterlacing algorithm based on motion estimation and compensation with variable block size. Motion compensated methods using a fixed block size tend to produce undesirable artifacts when there exist complicated motion and high frequency components. In the proposed algorithm, the initial block size of motion estimation is determined based on the existence of global motion. Then, the block is divided depending on block characteristics. Since motion compensated deinterlacing may not always provide satisfactory results, the proposed method also use an intrafield spatial deinterlacing. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides noticeable improvements compared to motion compensated deinterlacing with a fixed block size.

In the Wyner-Ziv coding, compression performance highly depends on the quality of the side information since better quality of side information brings less channel noise and less parity bit. However, as decoder generates side information without any knowledge of the current Wyner-Ziv frame, it doesn't have optimal criterion to decide which block is more advantageous to generate better side information. Hence, in general, fixed block size motion estimation (ME) is performed in generating side information. By the fixed block size ME, the best coding performance cannot be attained since some blocks are better to be motion estimated in different block sizes. Therefore if there is a way to find appropriate ME block of each block, the quality of the side information might be improved. In this paper, we investigate the effects of variable block sizes of ME in generating side information.
In HEVC variable block size motion estimation, same search window data are duplicatedly used in each block size. It increases memory bandwidth, and it is difficult to exploit early termination. In this paper, largest block size and its corresponding smaller block sizes with same positions are performed at the same time. It reduces memory bandwidth and computation by reusing search window data and computation results. In the early termination, image quality can be degraded when it determines early termination by observing largest block size only, since smaller block sizes cannot be equally terminated due to their relative positions. So, in this paper, processing order of early termination is changed to perform smaller block sizes in turns. The designed motion estimation engine was described in Verilog HDL and it was synthesized and verified in 0.18um process technology. Its gate count and maximum operating frequency are 36,101 gates and 263.15 MHz, respectively.
We propose an adaptive zoom motion estimation method where a picture is divided into two areas based on the distance information with a depth camera : the one is object area and the other is background area. In the proposed method, the zoom motion is only applied to the object area except the background area. Further, the block size of motion estimation for the object area is set to smaller than that of background area. This adaptive zoom motion estimation method can be reduced at the complexity of motion estimation and can be improved at the motion estimation performance by reducing the block size of the object area in comparison with the conventional zoom motion estimation method. Based on the simulation results, the proposed method is compared with the conventional methods in terms of motion estimation accuracy and computational complexity.

The main feature of H.264 standard against conventional video standards is the high coding efficiency and the network friendliness. In spite of these outstanding features, it is not easy to implement H.264 codec as a real-time system due to its high requirement of memory bandwidth and intensive computation. Although the variable block size motion compensation using multiple reference frames is one of the key coding tools to bring about its main performance gain, it demands substantial computational complexity due to SAD (Sum of Absolute Difference) calculation among all possible combinations of coding modes to find the best motion vector. For speedup of motion estimation process, therefore, this paper proposes fast algorithms for both integer-pel and fractional-pel motion search. Since many conventional fast integer-pel motion estimation algorithms are not suitable for H.264 having variable motion block sizes, we propose the motion field adaptive search using the hierarchical block structure based on the diamond search applicable to variable motion block sizes. Besides, we also propose fast fractional-pel motion search using small diamond search centered by predictive motion vector based on statistical characteristic of motion vector.

In this paper, we propose a fast multiple reference frame selection method for motion estimation and compensation in video coding. Reference frames selected as an optimal reference frame by variable block sizes motion estimation have the statistical characteristic that was based on block size. Using the statistical characteristic, reference frames for smaller block size motion estimation can be selected from reference frame which was decided as an optimal one for the upper layer block size. Simulation results show that the proposal method decreased the computations about 60%. Nevertheless, PSNR and bit rate were almost same as the performances of original H.264 multiple reference motion estimation.
The adaptive coding schemes in H.264 standardization provide a significant ceding efficiency and some additional features like error resilience and network friendliness. The variable block size motion compensation using multiple reference frames is one of the key H.264 coding elements to provide main performance gain, but also the main culprit that increases the overall computational complexity. For this reason, this paper proposes a selective motion estimation algorithm based on variable block size for fast motion estimation in H.264. After we find the SAD(Sum of Absolute Difference) at initial points using diamond search, we decide whether to perform additional motion search in each block. Simulation results show that the proposed method is five times faster than the conventional full search in case of search range $\pm$32.
A linkage mechanism is a device to convert an input motion into a desired output motion. Traditional linkage mechanism designs are based on trial and error approaches so that size or shape changes of an original mechanism often result in improper results. In order to resolve these problems, an improved automatic mechanism synthesis method that determines the linkage type and dimensions by using an optimization method during the synthesis process has been proposed. For the synthesis, a planar linkage is modeled as a set of rigid blocks connected by zero-length translational springs with variable stiffness. In this study, the sizes of rigid blocks were also treated as design variables for more general linkage synthesis. The values of spring stiffness and the size of rigid block yielding a desired output motion at the end-effecter are found by using an optimization method.

This paper presents an effective motion estimation to improve the performance of the motion compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) which is a core part of the wavelet-based scalable video coding. The proposed scheme makes the motion vector field uniform by the modified median operation and the search strategies using adjacent motion vectors, in order to enhance the pixel connectivity which is significantly relevant to the performance of the MCTF. Moreover, the motion estimation with variable block sizes that reflects the features of frames is introduced for further correlation improvement of the motion vector field. Experimental results illustrate that the proposed method reduces the decomposed energy on the temporal high frequency subband frame up to 30.33% in terms of variance compared to the case of the full search with fixed block sizes.
