Peat humin(p-Humin) extracted from Canadian Sphagnum peat moss was packed in a column and removal of heavy metal ions such as Cd, Cu and Pb from aqueous solution under flow conditions was studied. The metal ions were removed not only from single-element solutions but also from a multi-metal solution. Column kinetics for metal removal were described by the Thomas model. For single-component metal solutions, the maximum adsorption capacities of the p-Humin for Pb, Cu and Cd were 138.8, 44.66 and 41.61 mg/g, respectively. The results of multi-component competitive adsorption showed that adsorption affinity was in the order of Pb $\gg$ Cu > Cd. The adsorbed metal ions were easily deserted from the p-Humin with 0.05 N $HNO_3$ solution. It is apparent that 95% of the heavy metal ions were recovered from the saturated column. This investigation provides possibility to clean up heavy-metal contaminated waste waters by using the natural biomass, p-Humin as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective new biosorbents.

In this study, AZO (Al: 3 wt%) thin films have been prepared on PES Plastic substrates at various working pressure (5~20 mTorr), $O_2$ gas flow rate(0~3%) and the fixed substrate temperature of 200 f by using the RF magnetron sputtering and their optical and electrical properties have been studied. The XRD measurement shows that AZO thin films exhibit c-axis preferred orientation. From the results of AFM measurements, it is known that the lowest surface roughness (3.49 nm) is obtained for the AZO thin film fabricated at 5 mTorr of working pressure and 3% of $O_2$ gas flow rate. The optical transmittance of AZO thin films is measured as 80% in the visible region. We observe that the energy band gap of AZO thin films increases with decreasing the working pressure and the $O_2$ gas flow rate. This phenomenon is due to the Burstein-Moss effect. Hall measurement shows that the maximum carrier concentration ($2.63\;{\times}\;10^{20}\;cm^{-3}$) and the minimum resistivity ($4.35\;{\times}\;10^{-3}\;{\Omega}cm$) are obtained for the AZO thin film fabricated at 5mTorr of working pressure and 0% of $O_2$ gas flow rate.
Stone-cultural-properties, distributed in Naju, Hwasun and a part of Jangheung, have been investigated and studied on the characteristics, rock weathering and phases in the geological and conservational points of view. The properities involve pagoda and twelve stupas, four stone-buddha, three stone monuments, two stone-lantern, four stone-Jangseung, one and flag-pole. The rocks used are mainly pebble-bearing tuffaceous rocks of the Cretaceous age which are widely distributed in the area. However, granites are also used in some properties. These rocks are strongly influenced by weathering and pervasive moss. The mottled rock surfaces in some properties are in colors due to pervasive moss different. Parts of some cultural properties are broken which results in structurally unstable. Cultural properties in the area are relatively well conserved at the earth consolidated by ramming and by iron fence. However some cultural properties are partly repaired by using other hinds of rock phases which results in different colors in weathered rock surface. For conservation, rock phases, weathered surface colors, and relationships with original parts must be scientifically considered in repairment forward.

In this study, Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) thin films were fabricated on transparent sapphire substrate by RF magnetron sputtering method and then investigated the effect of various substrate temperature on the electrical, optical properties and characteristic of crystallization of the GZO thin films. The electrical property indicated that the lowest resistivity ($4.18{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$), the highest carrier concentration ($6.77{\times}10^{20}cm^{-3}$) and Hall mobility ($22cm^2/Vs$) were obtained in the GZO thin film fabricated at $300^{\circ}C$. And for this condition, the highest c-axis orientation and (002) diffraction peak which exhibits a FWHM of $0.34^{\circ}$ were obtained. From the results of AFM measurements, it is known that the highest crystallinity is observed at $300^{\circ}C$. The transmittance spectrum in the visible range was approximately 80 % regardless of substrate temperature. The optical band-gap showed the blue-shift as increasing the substrate temperature to $300^{\circ}C$, and they are all larger than the band gap of bulk ZnO (3.3 eV). It can be explained by the Burstein-Moss effect.

This study was conducted to investigate the inhibitory activity of water extracts and its enzymatic hydrolysates from algae against angiotensin-I converting enzyme (ACE). The 7 kinds of algae were extracted with water at $50^{\circ}C,\;70^{\circ}C$ and $98^{\circ}C$. ACE inhibitory activities of water extracts were the highest at $70^{\circ}C$, and those of ceylon moss, layer, green layer, sea mustard, seaweed fusiforme sea tangle and sea staghorn were $10.9\%,\;9.3\%,\;8.9\%,\;8.2\%,\;7.5\%,\;7.1\%$ and $7.0\%$, respectively. Layer, green laver sea mustard and ceylon moss of high ACE inhibitory activities among the 7 kinds of water extracts were hydrolyzed by maxazyme and papain during 24hrs. ACE inhibitory activity of enzymatic hydrolysates was higher than that of water extracts, and was the highest in enzymatic hydrolysates of laver among the tested samples. In laver hydrolysates by proteases, the highest ACE inhibitory activity and peptide-nitrogen contents were observed at 8 hours hydrolysis and the hydrolysates by maxazyme showed relatively higher activity than those by papain(31.3 and $27.9\%$, respectively). But peptide-nitrogen contents were greater in papain hydrolysates than in maxazyme.
In order to establish in vitro propagation method of sundew, Drosera rotundifolia L., the effects of MS medium concentration, cytokinin type and concentration, pH, and auxin type and concentration on shoot proliferation and root formation were investigated using shoots at 3 month after seed germination. The highest shoot production was obtained with the half strength of MS ($\frac{1}{2}$ MS) medium than with any other strength of MS medium tested. Addition of kinetin or BA in $\frac{1}{2}$ MS medium was strongly suppressed shoot proliferation. The suppression of shoot proliferation was more effective in BA-supplemented $\frac{1}{2}$ MS medium than kinetin-supplemented. The optimum pH of the media for shoot proliferation was pH 5.7-6.7. Shoots were subcultured in $\frac{1}{2}$ MS medium supplemented with 0.5mg/L 2,4-D for rooting every 8 weeks. All subcultured shoots produced extensive root systems after 5 to 6 week culture. Plantlets after root development were planted in plastic pots filled with moss. The survival rate of plantlets was almost 100%. On subculturing every 8 weeks, hundreds of the plants were propagated from a single plant within a year.

Pristine ZnO, 3 wt.% Ga-doped (3GZO) and 3 wt.% Ag-doped (3SZO) ZnO nanowires (NWs) were grown using the hot-walled pulse laser deposition (HW-PLD) technique. The doping of Ga and Ag in ZnO NWs was observed by analyzing the optical and chemical properties. We optimized the synthesis conditions, including processing temperature, time, gas flow, and distance between target and substrate for the growth of pristine and doped ZnO NWs. The diameter and length of pristine and doped ZnO NWs were controlled under 200 nm and several ${\mu}m$, respectively. Low temperature photoluminescence (PL) was performed to observe the optical property of doped NWs. We clearly observed the shift of the near band edge (NBE) emission by using low temperature PL. In the case of 3GZO and 3SZO NWs, the center photon energy of the NBE emissions shifted to low energy direction using the Burstein Moss effect. A strong donor-bound exciton peak was found in 3 GZO NWs, while an acceptor-bound exciton peak was found in 3SZO NWs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) also indicated that the shift of binding energy was mainly attributed to the interaction between the metal ion and ZnO NWs.
Stages of vegetation development on talus area were studied to examine temporal changes in species composition and vegetation structure, and to elucidate the mechanism of early patch formation. While ground coverage of lichens, which may form substrate for moss colonization and mitigate the heat-stress on rocks, decreased gradully, coverage of mosses increased slightly during primary succession. Ecological role of mossess related with water retention in community may be very important not only at pioneer stage but also at later stages because of little soil development on this talus area. Species diversity and species richness increased during the early stages of succession. Parthenocis년 tricuspidata and Sorbaria sorbifolia var. stellipa dominated in liana stage, Ulmus davidiana for. suberosa and Lindera obtusiloba in shrub stage, and Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Actinidia arguta in subtree stage, however, was composed of mixed forest of several tree species. U. davidiana for. suberosa, L. obtusiloba, Securinega suffruticosa and Rhus chinensis were relatively important woody species in early patch forming process. The results, however, suggested that early establishment on talus area might be strongly associated with chance for safe-site because both pioneer species and later species could take part in early patch forming process.
The moss Physcomitrella patens has two life cycles, filamentous protonema and leafy gametophore. A modified from of suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH), mirror orientation selection (MOS), was applied to screen genes differentially expressed in the P. patens protonema. Using reverse Northern blot analysis, differentially expressed clones were identified. The identified genes were involved mainly in metal binding and detoxification. One of these genes was an AP2 (APETALA2) domain-containing protein (PpACP1), which was highly up-regulated in the protonema. Alignment with other AP2/EREBPs (Ethylene Responsive Element Binding Proteins) revealed significant sequence homology of the deduced amino acid sequence in the AP2/EREBP DNA binding domain. Northern analysis under various stress conditions showed that PpACP1 was induced by ethephon, cadmium, copper, ABA, IAA, and cold. In addition, it was highly expressed in suspension-cultured protonema. We suggest that PpACP1 is involved in responses to metals, and that suspension culture enhance the expression of genes responding to metals.
The prospect of live vaccines consisting of genetically modified vaccinia virus expressing foreign genes is exciting, but important issues concerning safety and efficacy need to resolved. Vaccinia virus (VV) is an efficient expression vector with broad host range infectivity and large DNA capacity. This vector has been particularly useful for identifying target antigens for humoral and cell-mediated immunity. The WHO smallpox eradication program, involving the extensive use of VV vaccines, resulted in the late 1970s in the elimination of one of the world's most feared diseases. This achievement is a triumph for preventive medicine and for international collaboration in public health. In 1980, WHO recommended that the routine use of smallpox vaccine should be stopped. Against this background, the prospect of li ve vaccines consisting of genetically modified VV expressing foreign antigens arising from the work of Moss, and Paoletti and their colleagues in 1982 has been greeted with enthusiasm. These investigators have shown that genes coding for immunogenic proteins can be inserted into VV DNA without impairing the ability of the virus to grow in cell culture. Moreover experimental animals infected with VV recombinants containing genes coding for a variety of immunizing proteins have been shown to be protected against challenge infection with the corresponding infectious agent. In this communication, I describe current progress in the construction of a novel plasmid vector that facilitate the insertion and expression of foreign genes in VV as well as the selection of recombinants.
