  • In general, mosaic blocks are used to hide some specified areas, such as human faces and disgusting objects, in an input image when images are uploaded on a web-site or blog. This paper proposes a new algorithm for robustly detecting grid mosaic areas in an image based on the edge projection. The proposed algorithm first extracts the Canny edges from an input image. The algorithm then detects the candidate mosaic blocks based on horizontal and vertical edge projection. Subsequently, the algorithm obtains real mosaic areas from the candidate areas by eliminating the non-mosaic candidate regions through geometric features, such as size and compactness. The experimental results showed that the suggested algorithm detects mosaic areas in images more accurately than other existing methods. The suggested mosaic detection approach is expected to be utilized usefully in a variety of multimedia-related real application areas.

  • For generating accurate land cover map over the whole Korean Peninsula, post-mosaic classification method is desirable in large area where multiple image data sets are used. We try to derive an optimal mosaic method of multi-temporal Landsat ETM+ scenes for the land cover classification over the Korea Peninsula. Total 65 Landsat ETM+ scenes were acquired, which were taken in 2000 and 2001. To reduce radiometric difference between adjacent Landsat ETM+ scenes, we apply three relative radiometric correction methods (histogram matching, 1st-regression method referenced center image, and 1st-regression method at each Landsat ETM+ path). After the relative correction, we generated three mosaic images for three seasons of leaf-off, transplanting, leaf-on season. For comparison, three mosaic images were compared by the mean absolute difference and computer classification accuracy. The results show that the mosaic image using 1st-regression method at each path show the best correction results and highest classification accuracy. Additionally, the mosaic image acquired during leaf-on season show the higher radiance variance between adjacent images than other season.

  • To acquire seabed information, the mosaic images of the seabed were generated using Side Scan Sonar. Short time energy function which is needed for slant range correction is proposed to get the height of Tow-Fish to the reflected acoustic amplitudes of each ping, and that leads to a mosaic image without water column. While generating mosaic image, maximum value, last value and average value are used for the measure of a pixel in the mosaic image and 3-D information was kept by using acoustic amplitudes which were heading for specific direction. As a generating method of mosaic image, low resolution mosaic image which is over 1m/pixel resolution was generated for whole survey area first, and then high resolution mosaic image which is generated under 0.1m/pixel resolution was generated for the selected area. Rocks, ripple mark, sand wave, tidal flat and artificial fish reef are found in the mosaic image.

  • Symptoms on 4 varieties of watermelons inoculated with watermelon mosaic potyvirus II isolated from watermelon (WMV-W) were severe mosaic and leaf malformation while those inoculated with cucumber green mottle mosaic tobamovirus from watermelon (CGMMV-W) were mild mosaic and chlorotic spots. Inoculation of the mixture of WMV-W and CGMMV-W produced extremely severe mosaic along with necrotic spots and general necrosis. Doubly infected plants were also stunted. Cells infected with WMV-W or CGMMV-W alone exhibited the intrinsically ultra-structural properties of each virus infection. WMV-W induced potyvirus-characteristic cylindrical inclusions in the cytosol. Virus particles were orderly aligned along the tonoplasts. CGMMV-W induced tobamovirus-characteristic stacked crystalline arrays of virus particles in the cytosol. Cells infected doubly with WMV-W and CGMMV-W contained striking cytopathic effects that were not present in single infection of each virus. The unique ring structure, nonagon, was that a single potyvirus particle was surrounded by 9 CGMMV-W tobamovirus particles.

  • Orchids have been propagated vegetatively for a long time without adequate control measures against virus diseases in Korea. As a result, it is presumed that most of the orchid varieties in Korea may have been degenerated. Nevertheless there has been little work on the virus diseases of orchids in Korea. Therefore studies were initiated to isolate an4 characterize the orchid viruses occurring in Korea. The results obtained are summerized as follows. 1. Symptoms of virus diseases on orchid varieties can be grouped 1) mosaic, 2) necrotic streak with mosaic, 3) ring necrosis, 4) chlorotkc ring and 5) necrotic spot. 2. A total of 102 orchid plants representing 4 genera were investigated on the occurrence of Cymbidium mosaic virus and tobacco mosaic virus by serological agar-gel double diffusion test. The test revealed that approximately $45\%$ of the orchids were infected with Cymbidium mosaic virus. None of the plants were found to be infected with tobacco mosaic virus. 3. Local lesions appeared on the inoculated leaves of Chenopodium amaranticolor Cassia occidentalis and Datura stramonium 7-12 days after mechanical inoculation with Cymbidium mosaic virus. 4. Physical properties of the Cymbidium mosaic virus determined by inoculation on Chenopodium amaranticolor were as follows: Thermal inactivation Point; $75-80^{\circ}C$, dilution end Point; $10^{-5}-10^{-6}\%$ aging in vitro; 8 days. 5. Three different buffers at pH 7.0 and pH 9.0 were compared for the efficiency of agar-gel double diffusion test with Cymbidium mosaic virus. Phosphate, imidazol and tris buffer at pH 7.0 gave equally satisfactory results. 6. Electron microscopic examination of the Cymbidium mosaic virus revealed rod shaped particles measuring 460-580mu.

  • With the current high distribution rate of smart devices and the recent development of computing technology, user interest in multimedia, such as photos, videos, and so on, has rapidly increased, which is a departure from the simple pattern of information retrieval. Because of these increasing interests, image processing techniques, which generate and process images for diverse applications, are being developed. In entertainment recently, there are some techniques that present a celebrity's image as a mosaic comprising many small images. In addition, studies into the mosaic technique are actively conducted. However, conventional mosaic techniques result in a long processing time as the number of database images increases, because they compare the images in the databases sequentially. Therefore, to increase search efficiency, this paper proposes an algorithm to generate a mosaic image using a discrete cosine transform (DCT) hash. The proposed photo mosaic-generation algorithm is composed of database creation and mosaic image generation. In database creation, it first segments images into blocks with a predefined size. And then, it computes and stores a DCT hash set for each segmented block. In mosaic generation, it efficiently searches for the most similar blocks in the database via DCT hash for every block of the input image, and then it generates the final mosaic. With diverse experimental results, the proposed photo mosaic-creation algorithm can effectively generate a mosaic, regardless of the various types of images and sizes.

  • Samples showing mosaic symptom of cowpea (Vigna sesquipedalis) with vein banding, chlorotic spot, vein yellow were collected from Chinju areas in Korea, Two viruses were distinguishable by stability in sap, host range, and relations with cells and tissues were examined under an electron microscope, Blackeye cowpea mosaic(BICMV) was sap-transmissible to 7 plant species in 2 families, Of the plants, only leguminous species were systemically infected. This virus was inactivated by heating at $50-65^{\circ}C$ for 10 min, by diluting at $10^{-4}-10^{-5}$, and aging at room temperature for 1-6 days. Preparations examined under the electron microscope by direct negative staining method(DN -method) always showed particles of flexuous filament bout 750nm in length and cytopasmic inclusions. Cytoplasmic inclusions and virus particles were also confirmed to present in the cytoplasm of a mesophyll cell by ultrathin sections of BICMV infected cowpea leaves. Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) was transmitted by sap- inoculation on inoculated leaves of Chenopodium amaranticolor, C. quinoa producing local lesions, but non-inoculated upper leaves of Nicotiana glutinosa, Cucurbita pepo and Vigna sesquipedalis producting systemic mosaic symptoms. Electron microscopic examination of virus preparation by direct negative staining showed spherical particles of about 30nm in diameter. In ultrathin sections of CMV infected tissues, virus particles of crystalline array were found in the vacuole and a large number of virus particles were found in the cytoplasm and the plasmodesmata of mesophyll cells.

  • A mosaic disease of gladiolus has been commonly observed with an infection rate of $43.3\%$ in the field. Bean Yellow Mosaic Virus(BYMV) produced veinal spreading lesions on Cheonopodium amaranticolor, veinal necrosis and severe leaf distortion on Phaseolus vulgaris 'Scotia' and mosaic on Vi cia faba. Cucumber Mosaic Virus(CMV) produced local lesions on C. amaranticolor, mosaic symptoms on Nicotiana glutinosa and Cucumis sativus. BYMV and CMV were transmitted by the green peach aphid. Purified BYMV and CMV had a typical maximum absorption at 260nm. In agar gel diffusion test, BYMV and CMV gave positive reaction with their homologous antiserum. The size of BYMV was 750nm in length, and CMV was 30nm in diameter.
