  • Objective: The growth and development of the mandible strongly depend on modeling changes occurring at its ramus. Here, we investigated covariance patterns between the morphology of the ramus and the rest of the face. Methods: Lateral cephalograms of 159 adults (55 males and 104 females) with no history of orthodontic treatment were collected. Geometric morphometrics with sliding semi-landmarks was used. The covariance between the ramus and face was investigated using a two-block partial least squares analysis (PLS). Sexual dimorphism and allometry were also assessed. Results: Differences in the divergence of the face and anteroposterior relationship of the jaws accounted for 24.1% and 21.6% of shape variation in the sample, respectively. Shape variation was greater in the sagittal plane for males than for females (30.7% vs. 17.4%), whereas variation in the vertical plane was similar for both sexes (23.7% for males and 25.4% for females). Size-related allometric differences between the sexes accounted for the shape variation to a maximum of 6% regarding the face. Regarding the covariation between the shapes of the ramus and the rest of the face, wider and shorter rami were associated with a decreased lower anterior facial height as well as a prognathic mandible and maxilla (PLS 1, 45.5% of the covariance). Additionally, a more posteriorly inclined ramus in the lower region was correlated with a Class II pattern and flat mandibular plane. Conclusions: The width, height, and inclination of the ramus were correlated with facial shape changes in the vertical and sagittal planes.

  • Coolia santacroce is a newly described epibenthic dinoflagellate species collected from the U.S. Virgin Islands. The original description indicates this species is unique from others in the Coolia monotis complex due to the relative size of the apical pore complex, broad range of pore sizes, and ribosomal DNA. The original description was done based on the isolation and cultivation of one isolate of the organism. In this study, we report three more isolates of Coolia santacroce collected from the Bahamas. Morphological observations were made using scanning electron microscopy that do not correspond to those from the original description, indicating the variability of the morphological features. However, analysis of the D1 / D2 regions of the large subunit rDNA places the three strains in a strongly supported monophyletic clade with the type specimen.

  • Cephalobus aff. quinilineatus (Shavrov, 1968) Anderson and Hooper, 1970 and Eucephalobus hooperi MarinariPalmisano, 1967 from the family Cephalobidae Filipjev, 1934 (Cephalobomorpha) are newly reported from South Korea. Cephalobus aff. quinilineatus is distinguished from other Cephalobus species by its high and rounded labial probolae and five lateral incisures, with three incisures extending to the tail terminus. Eucephalobus hooperi is distinguished from other Eucephalobus species by its three bifurcated labial probolae with pointed termini and by morphometric characters such as body and tail length and the corpus:isthmus ratio. In this study, the morphological characters and morphometrics of C. aff. quinilineatus and E. hooperi Korean population are described and illustrated based on optical and/or scanning electron microscopy.

  • The genus Prionchulus Cobb, 1916 represents a group of predaceous nematodes belonging to the family Mononchidae Chitwood, 1937, and is found worldwide. However, only five species have been reported thus far from Korea. Prionchulus oleksandri Winiszewska and Susulovsky, 2003 is reported for the first time from Korea, from sediments collected from the Nakdong River. This species is distinguished from other Prionchulus species by its truncated lip region with small cephalic papillae and refringens vaginae. In this study, morphological characters(detailed morphometrics) of P. oleksandri are described and illustrated using optical microscopy. DNA barcode sequence information (the D2-D3 region of 28S rDNA, 18S rDNA, and internal transcribed spacer rDNA) is also provided for the molecular identification of the species.

  • Two new species of Myrmica from Korea are described. M. koreana belongs to the schencki species-group of Myrmica and is most similar to M. schencki. It is possibly endemic to the Korean Peninsula. M. hyungokae belongs to the lobicornis-group and is most similar to M. jessensis. It has some characters normally associated with social parasites but it is probably a free-living species. Both new species were clearly separated from their nearest relatives on subjective characters (shape, sculpture etc.) and this was confirmed by discriminant analysis of the morphometrics.
