  • The structure zone model has been used to provide an overview of the relationship between the microstructure of the films deposited by PVD and the most prominent deposition condition.s. B.AMovchan and AV.Demchishin have proposed it firstls such model. They concluded that the general features of the resulting structures could be correlated into three zones depending on $T/T_m$. Here T m is the melting point of the coating material and T is the substrate temperature in kelvines. Zone 1 ($T/Tm_) is dominated by tapered macrograins with domed tops, zone 2 ($O.3) by columnar grains with denser boundaries and zone 3 ($T/T_m>O.5$) by equiaxed grains formed by recrystallization. J.AThomton has extended this model to include the effect of the sputtering gas pressure and found a fourth zone termed zone T(transition zone) consisting of a dense array of poorly defined fibrous grains. R.Messier found that the zone I-T boundary (fourth zone of Thorton) varies in a fashion similar to the film bias potential as a function of gas pressure. However, there has not nearly enough model for explaining the change in morphology with crystal orientation of the films. The structure zone model only provide an information about the morphology of the deposited film. In general, the nucleation and growth mechanism for granular and fine structure of the deposited films are very complex in an PVD technique because the morphology and orientation depend not only on the substrate temperature but also on the energy of deposition of the atoms or ions, the kinetic mechanism between metal atoms and argon or nitrogen gas, and even on the presence of impurities. In order to clarify these relationship, AI and Mg thin films were prepared on SPCC steel substrates by PVD techniques. The influence of gas pressures and bias voltages on their crystal orientation and morphology of the prepared films were investigated by SEM and XRD, respectively. And the effect of crystal orientation and morphology of the prepared films on corrosion resistance was estimated by measuring polarization curves in 3% NaCI solution.

  • Spinel structured lithium managanese oxide $(LiMn_2O_4)$ powder with well defined facetted morphology was prepared by precipitation-evaporation method. {111}, {110}, and {100} planes are mainly observed in the $LiMn_2O_4$ powder. And powder shape of tetradecahedron and octahedron was observed depending on the calcinations temperature. The observed powder morphology observed seemed to be related to the nonstoichiometry of the oxygen in the $LiMn_2O_4$ spinel structure. Oxygen nonstoichiometry might be responsible for the Jahn-teller effect and structure transition which in turn affects the surface energy of the {111}, {110}, and {100} planes. Powder shape transition from tetradecahedron to octahedron seemed to be related to the surface energy of the {111}, {110}, and {100} planes with oxygen nonstoichiometry.

  • Silicide layer structures and morphology degradation of the surface and interface of the silicide layers for he Co/refractory metal bilayer sputter-deposited on the P-doped polycrystalline Si substrate and subjected to rapid thermal annealing were investigated and compared with those on the single Si substrate. The CoSi-CoSi2 phase transition temperature is lower an morphology degradation of the silcide layer occurs more severely for the Co/refractorymetal bilayer on the P-doped polycrystalline Si substrate than on the single Si substrate. Also the final layer structure and the morphology of the films after silicidation annealing was found to depend strongly upon the interlayer metal. The layer structure after silicidation annealing of Co/Hf/doped-poly Si is Co-Hf alloy/polycrystalline CoSi2/poly Si substrate while that of Co/Nb is polycrystalline CoSi2/NbSi2/polycrystalline CoSi2/poly Si.

  • In this study, magnetic properties of anodized Al film deposited with ferro-magnetic metals in the capacity of perpendicular magnetic recording media were measured and evaluated to find out the role of structure and morphology of the oxide films on magnetic characteristics. The object of this work was to present the conditions of magnetic thin film formation with more superior magnetic property. Anodizing was carried out under various conditions, and then the anodized film were electro-deposited with Co, Ni, Fe and their alloys. Coercive force and residual magnetization in perpendicular direction increased as the pore length of anodized film increased. It was attributed to the increase of the amount of depoisted metals and the ratio of length/diameter of pores. Morphology of anodized films in phosperic acid was not similar to that of sulfuric acid, and thin films in the former solution had perpendcular magnetic anisostropy because of large diameter, irregular length and distribution of the pores. It was found that magnetic properties of the thin films, which had doubled layer of two metals, were dominated by the metal electrodeposited on the surface of the anodized oxide films.

  • Comparative morphology of winter buds of 16 species of gymnosperms which belong to six families and 13 genera was investigated. All the species examined except Taxaceae had bracts and ovuliferous scales in female buds, and the bract was fused with ovuliferous scale in various degrees. Comparison of the modern conifers with fossil ones in the position of ovule and structure of bract-scale complex suggested that Taxaceae should be placed in Coniferales, rather than treating as a distinct order. The disposition of bract surrounding the ovules of Cephalotaxus and Torreya indicated that the origin, of ovules had separate evolutionary line in spite of similar structure of female bud. The shape of microsporophyll in male bud was diverse among the species. The dehiscence of microsporangium was transverse in Abies and Tsuga, while longitudinal in other species. Descriptions and key to the species based on bud morphology were provided.

  • In this paper, electrochemical techniques are used to investigate hydrothermal-electrochemically formation of barium titanate (BT) ceramic films. For comparison, the electrochemical behaviors of anodic titanium oxide films formed in alkaline solution were also investigated both at room temperature and in hydrothermal condition at 150.0 ℃. Film structure and morphology were identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Titanium oxide films produced at different potentials exhibit different film morphology. The breakdown of titanium oxide films anodic growth on Ti electrode plays an important roles in the formation of BT films. BT films can grow on anodic oxide/metal substrate interface by short-circuit path, and the dissolution-precipitation processes on the ceramic film/solution interface control the film structure and morphology. Based upon the current experimental results and our previous work, extensively schematic proce-dures are proposed to model the mechanism of ceramic film formation by hydrothermal-electrochemical method.

  • We have five soil series of pan soils in South Korea out of 391 series: Gangreung, Bugog, Yeongog, Jangweon, and Pogog. Productivity decreases in pan soils as pan horizons impede percolation and capillary rise of water and interrupt root extension. This study was performed to investigate pedogenic processes of pan soils mainly located in footslope and river terrace by analyzing physicochemical properties and soil micro-morphology. Korean pan soils belong to Alfisols, Ultisols, or Inceptisols and have udic or aquic soil moisture regime, mesic temperature regime, and mixed mineral substances. Texture of pan horizons selected for the present study was mainly silty clay loam with clay contents ranging from 26.3 to 45.3%. Bulk density of the pan horizons ranged from 1.4 to $2.1Mg\;m^{-3}$ and their soil structure were subangular or angular structure. In terms of micro-morphological structure, Bt horizon of Gangreung series was formed as platy and striated b-fabric structure possibly affected by uplift of coastal terrace following clay sedimentation by flood. Jangweon series showed micro-morphology of massive structure and crystallic b-fabric as macropores between coarse debris established by debris fall in slope were filled with silt-sized particles. The Bt horizons having massive structure and striated b-fabric in Yeongog, Pogog, and Bugog series implies that those horizons experienced horizontal mass flow after clay accumulation.

  • A $TiO_2$ film for photocatalyst was prepared by anodic oxidation at 180V in acidic electrolyte and film formation mechanism was studied. The major part of anodic $TiO_2$ film consisted of anatase type structure and surface morphology exhibited a porous cell structure. The thickness growth rate of the oxide film with anodization time revealed two-stage slope corresponds to the surface morphology between anodic films. The growth of pores on cell structure and the growth rate of film with two-stage slope are related to the constant formation rate of the $TiO_2$ layer.

  • Single phase niobium nitride (NbN) coatings were deposited using asymmetric bipolar pulsed dc sputtering by varying pulse frequency and duty cycle of pulsed plasmas. Crystal structure, microstructure, morphology and mechanical properties were examined using XRD, FE-SEM, AFM and nanoindentation. Upon increasing pulse frequencies and decreasing duty cycles, the coating morphology was changed from a pyramidal-shaped columnar structure to a round-shaped dense structure with finer grains. Asymmetric bipolar pulsed dc sputtered NbN coatings deposited at pulse frequency of 25 kHz is characterized by higher hardness up to 17.4 GPa, elastic modulus up to 193.9 GPa, residual compressive stress and a smaller grain size down to 27.5 nm compared with dc sputtered NbN coatings at pulse frequency of 0 kHz. The results suggest that the asymmetric bipolar pulsed dc sputtering technique is very beneficial to reactive deposition of transition-metal nitrides such as NbN coatings.
