  • Comparative studies on external morphology and anatomical characters were conducted understand the interspecific relationships and possibly to identify the position of Hanabusaya asiatica as an endemic genus among 4 genera and 9 species in H. asiatica and its allied groups. Such morphological characteristics as root shape, leaf size, presence or absence of wings in petiole, corolla and calyx shape, and inflorescence and stigma shape were useful qualitative characters. The morphology of stem, peduncle, calyx lobe, leaf, petiole, and ovary were also good characters to be included in this identification study. In the anatomical observations in these organs, projecting degree of epidermis and number of projecting area rather than cross-sectioned internal structures were found to be valuable index for the classification among species. External morphology and anatomical characters support the position of H. asiatica as an endemic genus very well. Known as the most important external characters to taxonomists(Fedorov, 1957: Nakai, 1952: Hong, 1983), leaf arrangement, inflorescence, and corolla shape were also preven to be very useful characters to identify the genera and species in the H. asiatica and its allied groups.

  • Morphological reinvestigation, external characters and discriminant functional analysis(44 qualitative characters) were examined on 6 taxa of Korean Ophelia, including 5 taxa distributed in south Korea, and one taxon considered to be the variation type of Ophelia wilfordi in order to clarify the limit of intersection and interspecies. And to establish the taxonomic position. One taxon distributed in north Korea was included in the description of species by observation of herbarium specimen of the University of Tokyo in Japan. The two sections were successfully distinguished by internal structure of ovary, morphology of nectary, number of corolla lobe and calyx lobe, and species were also distinguished by morphology of cauline leaf, and color and spot of corolla, respectively. The variation type of Ophelia wilfordi was not distinguished with other species except for absent or present of purple spot in corolla lobe. The results of the discriminal functional analysis indicated that characters of corolla were the most important qualitative characters to distinguish the Ophelia taxa, and morphology of seed and seed coat was useful characters to distinguish taxa higher than species. Therefore the difficult problems of identification of species were successfully solved, and the taxonomic position in intrageneric level was clarified on Korean Ophelia.

  • Epidermal leaf cell phytoliths of 17 species of Oryza were examined with backscattered electron imaging with scanning electron microscopy to determine the usefulness of phytolith morphology for systematic studies. Many kinds of identifiable phytolith morphology are observed in the leaf blades of Oryza. They are different among species as well as between adaxial and abaxial surface and costal and intercostal strip portions of leaf blades. Distinguishing phytolith characters are useful at the level of the section, such as Angustifoliae, Ridleyanae, and Granulatae. The results of a cluster analysis using 21 qualitative characters of phytoliths reveal many taxonomic characteristics which are compatible with current taxonomy.

  • In the main current 3D animations which are put on the screens, the characters in the animations have a directly effect on the audiences by being closely connected with their descriptive constructions. In this research i am going to recognize the importance of characters and trace the points of sameness in the characters that appear in the 3D animations by analysing them. For this, 1 divided the characters that made lots of box-office profits all over the world and were made at Pixar which focused on characters and stories into 7 types according to written by Vladimir Propp and grasped the characters with MBTI system. 1 found out the points of sameness between the characters with this system. That will be able to be made use of referring the streams of stories and fixing the characters at the planning and producing stages. If we should make a study of figures, expressions, motions of the characters in connection with this research, it could help us to create the characters which are suitable for animations not only formative elements but also acting.

  • A pollen morphological study was conducted using light and scanning electron microscopy involving six species belonging to the subtribe Neoguillauminiinae. Pollen samples from the six species are tricolporate, and the colpi are surrounded by broad margo, with the widest width in the equator, narrower toward the pole, and rounded at the end. Based on the pollen morphology, pollen of the species in the subtribe Neoguillauminiinae were divided into four types: the Neoguillauminia type (T1), the C. collinus type (T2), the C. casuarinoides type (T3) and the C. paucifolius type (T4). The generic divergence between Neoguillauminia and Calycopeplus was supported by the pollen characters of the size, amb and lumina shape. In particular, the traits of rounded shape in the outline of the polar view and circular lumina, which appear only in the pollen grains of N. cleopatra, support the recognition of Neoguillauminia as a monotypic genus. Calycopeplus oligandrus and C. paucifolius had the same reticulate pattern of pollen grains, supporting Forster's hypothesis that these two species are closely related. On the other hand, the close relationship between the morphologically similar C. collinus and C. casuarinoides was not supported by the pollen characters. Within the subtribe there are two equally parsimonious hypotheses regarding the evolution of exine characters. The first consists of two changes of microreticulate through parallel evolution from the primitive reticulate exine, and the second is that the microreticulate pattern is differentiated from the reticulate state and then reversed to reticulate pollen grains.

  • Populations of Campylaephora borealis (Nakamura) Seo, Cho et Boo and C. crassa (Okamura) Nakamura show a year-around occurrence of all life-history stages. Such a concurrency of life-history stages produces problems in recognizing species in the field. Here, we invesitgated the morphological variation and life-history stages of both species using a statistical character analysis. Life-history stage was correlated with the seawater temperature in C. borealis, whereas it was dependant on biomass in C. crassa. Thalli had dichotomous branches with adaxial branchlets. The statistics showed that the seasonal change in morphology of C. borealis was significantly different from that of C. crassa in seven qualitative characters and five quantitative characters (p < 0.001), although six quantitative features including tetrasporangial size were similar in both species. The morphological difference between the two species may be due to the annual variation of branchlet number and the variance of branch subangle.

  • The morphology, taxonomy, and distribution of species belonging to the diatom family Rhizosoleniaceae were studied from the marine coastal waters of Korea. Rhizosolenid diatom taxa were collected at 30 sites from September 2008 to February 2010 and were analyzed by light and scanning electron microscopy. We identified 6 rhizosolenid genera, including Rhizosolenia, Proboscia, Pseudosolenia, Neocalyptrella, Guinardia, and Dactyliosolen. We describe 5 genera in this study, except Rhizosolenia. Five genera were compared in detail with congeneric species. Six genera within the family Rhizosoleniaceae were divided into two groups based on morphological diagnostic characters including valve shape, areolae pattern, the shape of external process, and girdle segments in the column. The first group had a conoidal valve and loculate areolae, which comprised Rhizosolenia, Proboscia, Pseudosolenia, and Neocalyptrella, and the second group of Guinardia and Dactyliosolen showed a flat or rounded valve and poroid areolae. Important key diagnostic characters were based on valve shape, areolae pattern on the segment, external process, position of the tube, and the valve margin. D. phuketensis was new to Korean coastal waters.

  • This paper proposed the multi characters detection algorithm using Color segmentation and the closing curve feature of LoG Operator in order to complement the demerit of the existing research which is weak in complexity of background, variety of light and disordered line and similarity of left and background color, etc. The proposed multi characters detection algorithm divided into three parts : The feature detection, characters format and characters detection Parts in order to be possible to apply to image of various feature. After preprocess that the new multi characters detection algorithm that proposed in this paper used wavelet, morphology, hough transform which is the synthesis logical model in order to raise detection rate by acquiring the non-perfection characters as well as the perfection characters with processing OR operation after processing each color area by AND operation sequentially. And the proposal algorithm is simulated with natural images which include natural character area regardless of size, resolution and slant and so on of image. And the proposal algorithm in this paper is confirmed to an excellent detection rate by compared with the conventional detection algorithm in same image.
