  • Visual saliency detection is an important part in various vision-based applications. There are a myriad of techniques for saliency detection in color images. However, the number of methods for saliency detection in infrared images is inadequate. In this paper, we introduce a simple approach for pedestrian identification in infrared images using saliency. The input image is thresholded into several Boolean maps, an initial saliency map is then calculated as a weighted sum of created Boolean maps. The initial map is further refined by using thresholding, morphology operation, and Gaussian filter to produce the final, high-quality saliency map. The experiment showed that the proposed method produced high performance results when applied to real-life data.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for extracting a road area by using the mean-shift method and connected-component method. Mean-shift method is very effective to divide the color image by the method of non-parametric statistics to find the center mode. Generally, the feature points of road are extracted by using the information located in the middle and bottom of the road image. And it is possible to extract a road region by using this feature-point and the partitioned color image. However, if a road region is extracted with only the color information and the position information of a road image, it is possible to detect not only noise but also off-road regions. This paper proposes the method to determine the road region by eliminating the noise with the closing / opening operation of the morphology, and by extracting only the portion of the largest area using a connected-components method. The proposed method is simulated and verified by applying the captured road images.

  • Polysulfone (PSF) is one of an important polymer that has been widely used in the manufacture of asymmetric microfiltration (MF) membranes. PSF membrane is considered as hydrophobic membrane that easily fouled during membrane operation process. The blending method is an effective method for improving the fouling resistance of PSF membranes. sPES (sulfonated polyethersulfone) is one of the useful polymers that can be used in PSF polymer blend method to improve hydrophilicity of PSF membranes. In this study, microfiltration polymer membranes were prepared by using PSF/sPES/PVP/BE/DMF casting solution and water coagulant. The morphology of MF membranes was changed by addition of a small amount of sPES in casting solution. The morphology of the sPES added membranes was changed into a highly asymmetric structure. The active layer grew and mean pore size was decreased by addition of sPES. However, the water flux of PSF/sPES/DMF/PVP/BE membrane was higher than that of PSF/DMF/PVP/BE membrane.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm to detect scale invariant object from IR image obtained in the sea environment. We create horizontal edge (HL), vertical edge (LH), diagonal edge (HH) of images through 2-D discrete Haar wavelet transform (DHWT) technique after noise reduction using morphology operations. Considering the sea environment, Gaussian blurring to the horizontal and vertical edge images at each level of wavelet is performed and then saliency map is generated by multiplying the blurred horizontal and vertical edges and combining into one image. Then we extract object candidate region by performing a binarization to saliency map. A small area in the object candidate region are removed to produce final result. Experiment results show the feasibility of the proposed algorithm.

  • Objective : The sub-axial injury classification (SLIC) and severity scale was developed to decide whether to operate the cervical injured patient or not, but the reliability of SLIC and severity scale among the different physicians was not well known. Therefore, we evaluated the reliability of SLIC among a spine surgeon, a resident of neurosurgery and a neuro-radiologist. Methods : In retrograde review in single hospital from 2002 to 2009 years, 75 cases of sub-axial spine injured patients underwent operation. Each case was blindly reviewed for the SLIC and severity scale by 3 different observers by two times with 4 weeks interval with randomly allocated. The compared axis was the injury morphology score, the disco-ligamentous complex score, the neurological status score and total SLIC score; the neurological status score was derived from the review of medical record. The kappa value was used for the statistical analysis. Results : Interobserver agreement of SLIC and severity scale was substantial agreement in the score of injury morphology [intraclass correlation (ICC)=0.603] and total SLIC and severity sacle (ICC value=0.775), but was fair agreement in the disco-ligamentous complex score (ICC value= 0.304). Intraobserver agreements were almost perfect agreement in whole scales with ICC of 0.974 in a spine surgeon, 0.948 in a resident of neurosurgery, and 0.963 in a neuro-radiologist. Conclusion : The SLIC and severity scale is comprehensive and easily applicable tool in spine injured patient. Moreover, it is very useful tool to communicate among spine surgeons, residents of neurosurgery and neuro-radiologists with sufficient reproducibility.

  • In This Paper, we find the Target Candidate Region and the Location of the Candidate Region by Performing the Morphological Difference Calculation and Pixel Labeling for Robust Small Target Detection in Infrared Image with low SNR. Conventional Target Detection Methods based on Morphology Algorithms are low in Detection Accuracy due to their Vulnerability to Clutter in Infrared Images. To Address the Problem, Target Signal Enhancement and Background Clutter Suppression are Achieved Simultaneously by Combining Moravec Algorithm and LCM (Local Contrast Measure) Algorithm to Classify the Target and Noise in the Candidate Region. In Addition, the Proposed Algorithm can Efficiently Detect Multiple Targets by Solving the Problem of Limited Detection of a Single Target in the Target Detection method using the Morphology Operation and the Gaussian Distance Function Which were Developed for Real time Target Detection.

  • Trivalent cerium-ion-doped $Y_3(Al,\;Ga)_5O_{12}$ nanoparticle phosphor nanoparticles were synthesized using the reverse micelle process. The Ce doped $Y_3(Al,\;Ga)_5O_{12}$ particles were obtained from nitrate solutions dispersed in the nanosized aqueous domains of a micro emulsion consisting of cyclohexane as the oil phase and poly(oxyethylene) nonylphenyl ether (Igepal CO-520) as the non-ionic surfactant. The crystallinity, morphology, and thermal properties of the synthesized $Y_3(Al,\;Ga)_5O_{12}:Ce^{3+}$ powders were characterized by thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy. The crystallinity, morphology, and chemical states of the ions were characterized; the photo-physical properties were studied by taking absorption, excitation, and emission spectra for various concentrations of cerium. The photo physical properties of the synthesized $Y_3(Al,\;Ga)_5O_{12}:Ce^{3+}$ powders were studied by taking the excitation and emission spectra for various concentrations of cerium. The average particle size of the synthesized YAG powders was below $1{\mu}m$. Excitation spectra of the $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$ and $Y_3Al_{3.97}Ga_{1.03}O_{12}$ samples were 485 nm and 475 nm, respectively. The emission spectra of the $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$ and $Y_3Al_{3.97}Ga_{1.03}O_{12}$ were around 560 nm and 545 nm, respectively. $Y_3(Al,\;Ga)_5O_{12}:Ce^{3+}$ is a red-emitting phosphor; it has a high efficiency for operation under near UV excitation, and may be a promising candidate for photonic applications.

  • Landslides triggered by rainfall produce severe effects on the serviceability and stability of railway. Since small amount of soil mass slipped on the rail can cause derailment which will induce great danger on people and trains, slope stability problem is one of the major concerns on the operation of railway In this study we investigated the characteristics of rainfall driven landslide near railway. A total of 23 sites were visited. Four different types of slope failure were classified based upon the morphology of the slipped slope triggered by rainfall. From the analysis dimensions of slopes (height, length and slope) do not show particular correlation with the types of landslides. In addition, morphological and geological features of slope influence the occurrence of different types of landslides.

  • This paper proposes a system detecting the area of traffic sign, which uses color rate as the information of colors, and corner point and distance rate as the information of morphology. In this system, a candidate area is extracted by performing dilation operation on the binary image made by the color rate of R, G, B components and by detecting corner point and center point through mask. The area of traffic sign with varied shapes is extracted by calculating the distance rate from center point, which is the information of morphology. The results of this experiment demonstrate that in this system which is invariable regardless of its size and location, it is possible to extract the exact area from varied traffic signs such as the shapes of triangle, circle, inverse triangle, and square as well as from the images at both day and night when brightness value is greatly different. Moreover, it demonstrates great accuracy and speed in processing.

  • Silver nanowire-based transparent electrodes are very attractive as a next-generation flexible and transparent electrode that can replace ITO-based flexible electrodes because they have excellent conductivity, transmittance and mechanical flexibility. However, weak understanding of the silver nanowire solution for the fabrication of silver nanowire-based transparent electrodes often cause abnormal operation of the electrical device or peeling problem of the electrode films when applied to electronic devices. Here, we studied a Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) adhesion promoter, which is one of the additives for silver nanowire solution, to improve the understanding of silver nanowire solution. In detail, it is characterized how the HPMC changes the properties of silver nanowire solution and silver nanowire film, which is fabricated with silver nanowire solution including the HPMC adhesion promoter. As the characteristics of solution, polar surface tension and dispersive surface tension were measured. As the film characteristics, surface energy, surface morphology, silver nanowire density, and sheet resistance were analyzed.
