  • Two new species of endophytic fungi were encountered during a diversity study of healthy tissues of chili pepper plants in Korea. The species were identified as Paecilomyces inflatus and Bionectria ochroleuca based on molecular and morphological analyses. Morphological descriptions of these endophytic isolates matched well with their molecular analysis. In the present study, detailed descriptions of internal transcribed spacer regions and morphological observations of these two fungi are presented.

  • The purpose of this study is to show how to gain the morphology of the Hybrid Spatial Structures and to get the geometrical data such as node coordinates, member relationships and graphic images. To form spatial structures, we have developed morphological aspects of general spatial structures, programming process and techniques. Structural design has many processes. Especially, it is very important to consider the determination of structural configuration. Regular Hybrid Spatial Structures have complex configuration, so we need to make use of automated computer process to determine structural shape in Hybrid Spatial Structures. We have applied morphological aspects to double layer plate, single layer dome, double layer dome and tensegrity structure.

  • This study focuses on how prosodically and morphologically based OT constraints are implemented in voicing and place assimilations in English. It is revealed that prosodically based ID-ONS(V) applies to both assimilations except for assimilations occurring with irregular inflection morphemes. Morphologically based meta-constraint ranking, however, plays a role only in progressive voicing assimilation with regular inflection morphemes and regressive place assimilation with complex words. Thus, prosodically and morphologically based constraints are differently implemented in assimilation processes in English. The study shows that general faithfulness constraints should be decomposed into more specified constraints. It is also revealed that the general direction of assimilation is regressive in English and it might be reversed if morphological facts are involved in the process (Lombardi, 2001).

  • In order to discriminate the morphologically analogous smallscale blackfish, Girella leonina and largescale blackfish, G. punctata, various methods were used by using biometric and geometric approaches. Morphometric analysis showed considerable 19 differences of total 44 morphometric dimensions: classical dimension 1 part; truss dimension 12 parts; and head part dimension 6 parts (P < 0.05). Some differences of morphological features primarily involved in caudal part of truss dimension. Our results of this study confirmed that two species adequately can distinguish with external body shape, and we hope that the results of our study could be used to identify in Girellidae family as taxonomical parameters.

  • How do aphasics deal with the inflectional marking occurring in agglutinative languages like Korean? Korean speech repetition, comprehension and production were studied in 3 Broca's aphasic speakers of Korean. As experimental materials, 100 easy sentences were chosen in 1st grade Korean elementary school textbooks about reading writing and listening, and two pictures were made from each sentence. This study examines the use of three kinds of inflectional markings--past tense, nominative case, and accusative case. The analysis focuses on whether each inflectional marking was performed well or not in tasks such as repetition, comprehension and production. In addition, morphological errors concerned with each inflectional marking were analyzed in view of markedness. In general, the aphasic subjects showed a clear preservation of the morphological aspects of their native language. So the view of Broca's aphasics as agrammatical could not be strongly supported. It can be suggested that nominative case and accusative case are marked elements in Korean.

  • Viburnum in Korea includes ten species. The phylogenetic relationships and morphology of the genus Viburnum in general have been studied substantially for the past three decades. A clear understanding of the systematic relationships and an assessment of the level of morphological variation of these plants distributed in Korea are lacking. This study investigated the morphology of these species using herbarium specimens and fresh materials obtained during fieldwork to examine the morphological variation level for a better understanding of each species in the genus. A comparative analysis showed that the species of Viburnum in Korea are easily distinguishable based on various characters of the bud, leaf, extrafloral nectary, inflorescence, corolla, fruit, and stone.

  • In this study, we identified two marine synchaetid rotifers, Synchaeta grimpei Remane, 1929 and S. vorax Rousselet, 1902, in Korea, which are the first synchaetid rotifers collected from a marine environment in the country. Prior to this study, all six synchaetids recorded in Korea were collected from freshwater environments. The morphological characteristics of both species are consistent with those recorded in previous studies of each species. Synchaeta grimpei is distinguished from other synchaetid rotifers by its cone-shaped body, wide and flat apical field, indistinct auricles, and long foot with two separated small toes. The morphological characteristics of Korean S. vorax specimens were most similar to the original description of Rousselet (1902), with its slender and cylindrical trunk shape, strongly convex apical field, and short foot with two small, separated toes. The rami of the Korean S. vorax specimen contained one frontal hook and several distinct and large teeth. Here, we provide the morphological diagnoses of the two synchaetid rotifers and the sequences of the partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) of the two species.

  • The aim of this study was to characterize a new fungal species, Acremonium conglutinatum, isolated from air samples collected in Wando, South Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on the internal transcribed spacer and large subunit regions revealed its unique position within the genus Acremonium. The isolated strain displayed distinct morphological characteristics, including ellipsoid or bent-ellipsoid conidia formed in clusters on the phialides. These features differentiate the new species from closely related species within the genus. This study describes the morphological and molecular characteristics of A. conglutinatum and emphasizes its phylogenetic relationships with other Acremonium spp. The identification of this novel species contributes to our understanding of the diversity and ecological role of Acremonium.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the distribution and morphological properties of mast cells in the ileum of Korean pheasant. In the ileum mast cells were located in the lamina propria of mucoase. The cells were mainly oval with irregular cell surface occasionally spindle-like or triangular in shape. Some mast cells had one or more tail-like long cytoplasmic processes. All mast cells had many blue granules stained by toluidine blue in the cytoplasm.

  • This paper aims to interpret the transformation process of town plan of Gosan-up(高山), which was provincial administrative focus town in Josun dynasty, basing on morphological viewpoint. Morphological concepts, such as morphological frame, urban plan, kernel, colonization, route system, fixation line, fringe belt, plan unit & plan division, morphological period derived from the study of Conzen, M.R.G. and Caniggia, G. epidome district, break point, broken plot, urban fallow, privatization are adopted for the interpretation of urban form. Morphological period of Gosan can be divided in four ; formation of kernel & morphological structure, disintegration & redevelopment of the kernel, augmentative development of the kernel & formation of modern epidome district, outwards expanding of urbanized area, transition & reorganization of epidome district. Especially public leading projects such as construction of new regional connection road and public facilities such as myeon(township) office, agricultural cooperatives federation office, market, are main factors of morphological transformation of townplan. In the early stage, under the Japanese imperialism, construction of the new matrix route(Gosan-ro) through the kernel and followed planned routes gave way to disintegrating traditional areal plan unit and forming small block plan units in administrative facilities area. And linear plan units with commercial buildings were formed along the new matrix route and planned route adjacent to periodical market. In the latter stage, with development of public facilities, private sectors' large circulation institution and terminal outside the kernel with planned routes formed areal block based plan units with commercial and public buildings. And part of the spatial area with the linear plan unit were turned into urban fallow. With the transformation of town plan, new roads outside the kernel have substituted for traditional fixation line of waterway with road and topographical feature. Fringe belts were made successively along the new road and around the major intersections outside of existing urbanized area. Land use in fringe belts, constituting of outer locational tendency early on formation, was gradually replaced with commercial & business buildings.
