  • In very high-spatial resolution remote sensing imagery, it is difficult to extract the feature information of various objects because of occlusion and shadows. Moreover, various and feeble information within shadows can be of use in GIS-based applications and remote sensing analysis. In this paper, we developed a radiometric restoration method for shadow areas using KOMPSAT-2 satellite image. After detecting the shadow, non-shadow pixels nearby are extracted using a morphological filter. An iterative linear regression method is applied to calculate the relationship between shadow and non-shadow pixels. The shadows are restored by the parameters of the linear regression algorithm. Tests show that recovery of shadowed areas by our method leads to improved image quality.

  • In this study, the author developed a new animal model to examine morphological changes and functional recoveries after vertical hemilaryngeal transplantation in the canine. Seven vertical hemilaryngeal transplantations were carried out in the canine. After preparing the host dog removing right sided hemilarynx, hemilarynx of the donor dog was transplanted by hooking up the arteries, veins, nerves and hypopharyngeal mucosa. Especially, recurrent laryngeal nerve was anastomosed at the branch level(anterior and posterior) respectively. After 7 days, for the first evaluation of the transplantation, four out of seven dogs were considered successful. Three dogs survived more than one month, which is the critical period to evaluate the functional recovery after transplantations. After EMG examination, two dogs(#3, #5 dog) showed some functional recoveries. The five-transplanted hemilarynges were sectioned at the arytenoid cartilage region to examine the morphological changes. The results showed that the transplanted hemilarynx appeared normal as control in #5 dog. In addition, #2 dog showed fairly good condition even though died from asphyxia after 9 days out of transplantation. The other. three dogs(#3, #6, #7) showed various levels of atrophy and disappearance of the muscles and cartilages in their larynges. It can be suggested that this model could contribute an advance to preparing human laryngeal transplantation in the future.

  • In this paper we investigated the behavior of low molecular weight silicone fluids in silicone rubber by W treatment with solvent-extraction and GPC. It was shown that LMW quantity which was extracted by solvent-extraction was decreased in UV treatment time. $200{\sim}450\;g/mol$ distribution of LMW silicone fluid was contributed to recovery. It was similar to result from corona discharge. Morphological analysis was investigated by scanning electron microscope(SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The behavior of LMW silicone fluids in silicone rubber which was contributed to recovery was discussed.

  • Antigen retrieval (AR) techniques were widely used to recover the antigenicity from the fixed tissues, which were guided by the philosophy of rendering immunohistochemistry (IHC) applicable to routine formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues for wide application of IHC in research and clinical filed for morphological observation like as anatomy, histology and pathology. Protease antigen recovery (PAR) is an AR technique, which is obtained the antigen retrieve by using enzyme digestion, and commonly used in IHC field. However, during the IHC for the detection of ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2) antigen, we noted lymphocyte-like cells-specific staining in the infiltrated cells into various organs like as liver and kidney, which was also shown in the IHC tissues with isotype control. However, those signals were not observed in the tissues conducted with in situ hybridization. Therefore, we analyzed the specificity of the IHC detection results. We found that PAR may induce false-positive result during IHC in lymphocyte-like cells, which were infiltrated mainly around vessels and in interstitial tissues. Through the Phenotyping, we realized that those false-positive cells were B-cell-related cells. These results suggest that PAR, a AR using protease, may induce non-specific false-positive reactions during IHC.

  • An application of the instrumented indentation technique has been expanded from the measurements of hardness and elastic modulus to the analysis of residual stress. A slope of the indentation loading curve increases (or decreases) according to compressive (or tensile) residual stress. A theoretical equation has been established for quantifying residual stress from the slope change. However, a precise observation of the remnant indents is indispensible because the theoretical approach needs actual contact information. In addition, the conventional hardness test is still used for predicting the residual stress distribution of welded joints. Thus, we observed the three-dimensional morphologies of the remnant indents formed on artificial stress states and analyzed stress effects on morphological recovery of the indents. First, a depth recovery ratio, which has been regarded as a sensitive stress indicator, did not show a clear dependency with the residual stress. Thus an analysis on volumetric recovery was tried in this study and yielded a inverse proportional behavior with the residual stress. In addition, an elastic to plastic volume recovery ratio showed more significant correlation with the residual stress.

  • The effects of in vitro culture methods on morphological development and infectivity of Strongyloides venezuelensis filariform larvae ($L_3$) to rats were investigated. A significantly higher body length was observed in $L_3$ from filter paper culture ($597.3{\;}{\pm}{\;}32.2{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$) than those in fecal (($509.9{\;}{\pm}{\;}35.0{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$) and nutrient broth culture (503.3{\;}{\pm}{\;}31.0{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}) (P<0.05). Larval infectivity was assessed by exposing rats to 1,000 $L_3$ from each culture and worms were recovered from the lungs and small intestines. Recovery rate of these worms did not show any significant difference. A significantly greater body length of adults was recorded in those corresponding to the $L_3$ harvested from filter paper (2,777.5{\;}{\pm}{\;}204.4{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$) and nutrient broth culture (($2.732.5{\;}{\pm}{\;}169.8{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$) than those corresponding to the $L_3$ obtained from fecal culture (($2.600.5{\;}{\pm}{\;}172.4{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$) (P<0.05). Although worm fecundity and EPG counts differed among culture methods but worm burdens and course of infection did not. These findings suggest that the methods of cultures have a significant effect on the morphological development of the larvae to the $L_3$ stage, but do not influence the infectivity to rats.

  • PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of exercise of diverse intensities on the recovery of articular cartilage in osteoarthritic rats. METHODS: Over a period of four weeks, the authors applied treadmill exercise programs of diverse intensities to Sprague-Dawley rats, to which intra-articular injection of monosodium iodoacetate(MIA, 3mg/$50{\mu}l$, diluted in saline) was applied to the right knee joint to induce osteoarthritis. The four-week exercise program was not carried out with the control group(CG, n=10). Exercise programs of applicable intensities were applied to the low-intensity exercise group(LEG, n=10), moderate-intensity exercise group(MEG, n=10), and high-intensity exercise group(HEG, n=10) over the four weeks. Observations were made of morphological changes in the rats' articular cartilage, using hematoxylin and eosin stains. RESULTS: there were significant differences(p<.05) in the comparison of articular damage scores between the four groups involved. Articular cartilage damage scores were found to be significantly lower in the LEG, MEG, and HEG than in the CG, indicating that exercise helped with the recovery of cartilage. Of these latter three groups, the MEG showed the highest level of recovery, while the HEG showed the lowest. CONCLUSION: These study results suggest that exercise is effective in treating OA. They also indicate that in prescribing exercise to treat osteoarthritic patients, exercise of moderate intensity is most suitable to patients' physical conditions, rather than low or high intensity, maximizes, and so should be used to maximize the effects of therapy.

  • This study was peformed to investigate the effects on skeletal muscle recovery with aqua-exercise; swimming to take the muscle endurance for 20 days on two group of white rats which were the low extremity atrophy group(control groups) by fixed for two weeks and aqua-exercise group(experimental groups) after it. The effects was observed with light and electron microcope to measure the morphological changes of muscle fibers. The results obtained were as follow. 1. Light microscope: In the case of control groups, quadriceps fibers had been irregular alignment, decreased muscle width and the irregular alignment nuclear appeared, as it is degenerative muscle fibers. In the case of experimental groups, the fibers had been regular alignment cells and fibers. The nucleus of muscle had been normal characterized by oval shape and fiber sarcomere clearly classified. 2. Electron microscope: In the case of control groups, there were the quadriceps which was Z-line streaming phenomenon induced at the sarcomere and cells nuclear separated from basal membrane. It was not only observed the sarcomere alignment irregularly and mitochondria damaged, but also vacuoles found. In the case of experimental groups, A band, I band, H band had been clearly appeared, classified at the myofibrils of quadriceps, and electronic dense M-line found in sarcomere. There were observed satellite cells and basal laminas that usually to be appeared at the time of mitochondrial development, skeletal muscle fiber regeneration or development. This results suggest that the aqua-exercise assisted to inhibit the degenerative morphological changes of skeletal muscle cells and help to recover from abnormal states. Especially, it is considered to effect on a normal structural formation.

  • The fast-changing climatic conditions make plants to be vulnerable to many abiotic stresses. Drought stress is one of the limiting factors that affect pepper production in water deficient regions. It affects plant growth and development by altering physiological, morphological, and metabolic processes. Breeding drought tolerant varieties is one of the mitigation strategies to overcome the ever increasing drought disaster. Hence, screening of new drought tolerant pepper genotypes is essential. The current study was aimed to identify new drought tolerant genotypes among the collection of pepper genetic resources. In total, 70 pepper genotypes were screened for drought tolerance after exposure to drought stress condition. The pepper genotypes were classified as highly tolerant, intermediate, or severely sensitive to drought stress based on the phenotypic analysis. Consequently, 13 genotypes significantly exhibited higher recovery rate after drought stress and were classified as highly tolerant. Comparative analysis of morphological and physiological parameters and expression of drought responsive genes between tolerant and susceptible pepper genotypes will be presented and discussed. The identified tolerant genotypes will be useful resources for breeding drought tolerant pepper cultivars.

  • The purpose of this article is to present the environmental enrichment(EE) method used to improve the functional recovery and change of brain plastic in animal experimental models of stroke. In animal experimental models of stroke, the environmental enrichment is effective in altering the morphological, biochemical and behavioral characteristics of the brain and thereby improving the functional outcomes. In this review article, we address the effects of EE in achieving a functional recovery in animal experimental models of stroke, thus attempting to describe them in patients with stroke from both occupational and rehabilitation perspectives.
