  • A series of meterological observation using automation weather station(AWS) carried out to investigate characteristics of nocturnal meteorological parameters for 16~17 June 1998 at Buljeongdong mountain slope, Kyungbuk. Dry temperature at valley was lower than mountain because of high lapse rate at valley, so the strong inversion layer occurrenced at mountain slope for nighttime. Contrary of dry temperature, relative humidity of valley was higher than mountain for nighttime. Wind speed at valley from sunset to next day morning was lower than mountain, but that of valley after sunrise was higher than mountain. Wind direction at valley for all observation time were southeasterlies(SE), that of mountain for nighttime were northeasterlies(NE) or northnorthwesterlies(NNW), and that of mountain after sunrise were irregular. Vapor pressure at valley for all observation time was higher mountain, particularly the difference was high for nighttime.

  • In this study, we analyzed the relationship between the time-variation trend of air pollution concentration index and the meteorological conditions with CO(carbon monoxide) concentration and meteorological observation data in high-CO episode days. CO is a representative automobile air pollutant. The results are as follows; 1. Most of the high-CO episode days within 30 classes appeared in winter season. 2. Most of them appeared under the surface weather conditions with east-west high-pressure system. The surface winds in this high-pressure area were very light. 3. The high-CO episode days were due to unusual accumulation within urban atmosphere in the morning. 4. The Atmospheric stabilities were more stable, and then the wind-ventilation conditions were worse than yearly mean atmospheric condition in Daegu.

  • Recently, the number of traffic accidents on trunk roads tends to decrease due to the performance improvement of passenger vehicles. In the commuter rush hour of morning and evening, vehicles via residential road increases without going along trunk roads. Therefore, there are many traffic accidents of pedestrians (or bicycles) and vehicles on residential roads. In order to safeguard residents against traffic accidents, traffic calming devices (TCD), such as chicane, speed hump, and school zone, etc. have been introduced. Investigating these effects repeatedly is not easy since many times and efforts are required, such as observed at the place actually. In this paper, the effects of TCDs in residential areas, such as noise, speed, and emission of a vehicle, using Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) are examined. As a result, it is found that it is possible to reduce the speed of the vehicle by TCD, and the level of noise at the location behind TCD becomes higher than the level of noise at the location of TCD implemented.

  • Fatigue has been a common symptom of warfighters who were participated in the early morning hours, late night hours, and sustained operations. Continuous operations may disrupt circadian rhythm, resulting in impaired combat capability. It is important to enhance alertness and sleep quality of warfighters for maintaining combat capability. A number of anti-fatigue strategies are available including medications. Here in, the pharmacological countermeasures of combat fatigue have reviewed, and the direction of research in the pharmacological countermeasures against combat fatigue are proposed.

  • Diurnal variations in the atmospheric vapor at Banchiao of Taiwan are studied by analyzing 30 min-averaged data in the summer of 1998. The surface meteorological measurements were mainly obtained from the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) of Taiwan. It is found that precipitable water (PW) is increased in the afternoon. The maximum of precipitable water appears at around 0900 LST. The diurnal range of precipitable water is larger on the days with than without rainfall events. Rainfall events often occur in the afternoon and early morning. We also examine the difference in the characteristics of the PW signatures with and without rainfall according to the occurrence of the times for the rainfall peak and the onset of rainfall.

  • The rupture of tracheobronchial tree caused by non penetrating blunt trauma is being increased in incidence though it is still rarely occurred on now Because this type of injury is uncommon, a high index of suspicion should be maintained in all crush injuries involving the chest. Early diagnosis and primary repair not only restore normal lung function but also avoid the difficulties and complications associated with delayed diagnosis and repair. We experienced a case of tracheobronchial rupture caused by non penetrating blunt chest trauma without rib fracture. The patient was a 16 year old male who was a high school student. He was compressed on anterior chest by hand ball goal post being failed down on the morning of admission day. After this accident, he was suffered from progressively developing dyspnea and subcutaneous emphysema on face, neck and anterior chest. The diagnosis, tracheal rupture, was made by chest CT and bronchoscopy. After right thoracotomy, the ruptured site was directly closed by using interrupted suture. Post-operative course was uneventful. Thus we report this case of traumatic tracheal rupture with review of literature.

  • Chun-Kwang(癲狂) is a oriental medical term which has psychosis or similar symptoms. It is similar to schizophrenia or bipolar disorder in western medicine. Recently we have treated a patient with Chun-Kwang showed psychomotor epilepsy symptoms. He usually has gotten vertigo in the morning, and then suffered from hallucinations. There was no evidence of organic abnormality in the brain. We treated the patient with oriental medical therapy. The result of treatment was effective partially.

  • A batch type passive solar water systems, which perform the dual function of absorbing the solar energy and storing the heated water, have been designed and fabricated for the purpose of side-by-side testing at KIER. The test models included an A, B and C type batch systems which were classified according to the design of box and arrangement of tanks. The year-round performance tests show that B type batch system taken the step-wise tank arrangement indicates 55.7% yearly-average collection efficiency factor and 61% yearly-average maximum collection efficiency factor. Computer-aided-experimental results show that the sufficient hot water can be obtained in the early morning if the glazing is supplemented by a reflector/insulation cover. The thermal performance equation has been developed for the prediction of hourly variation of the water temperature in tank.

  • Objectives: This paper aims to report the effects of Korean medical treatment on three patients who operated laparoscopic gynecological surgery. Methods: Three patients operated laparoscopic gynecological surgery and got Korean medical treatment during 5 or 6 days hospitalization. The treatment included Ikgibohyeol-tang-gagambang, acupuncture, moxa and hot pack treatment. Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) of chief symptoms was measured every morning. Results: After the treatment, the pains following surgery decreased, and general conditions improved. Conclusions: These cases show that Korean medical treatment including Ikgibohyeol-tang-gagambang is effective for patients who operated laparoscopic gynecological surgery.

  • Oral appliances therapy is becoming increasingly recognized as a successful treatment for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea(OSA). Compared with continuous positive airway pressure(CPAP), the gold standard therapy for OSA, oral appliance therapy are less efficacious for severe OSA but are more acceptable and tolerable for patients, which in turn, may lead to a comparable level of therapeutic effectiveness. Nevertheless, the various side effects of oral appliance therapy, such as, increased salivation or dryness, pain or discomfort in the teeth or gums, occlusal discomfort in the morning, temporomandibular disorders, dental and occlusal changes may cause discontinuation of treatment or changes in treatment plan. Therefore, oral appliance therapy should be provided by a qualified dentist who can evaluate oral tissues, occlusion, and temporomandibular joints, and prevent and manage the possible side effects.
