  • Inflatable rubber dams are used for controlling flood, impounding water for recreations, preventing beach erosions, diverting water for irrigations, and generating hydropower. They are long, flexible, inflated with air, cylindrical structures on a rigid horizontal foundation such as concrete. The dam is modeled as an elastic shell inflated with air. The mechanical behaviors of the inflated dam model were investigated by using the finite element method. The analysis process such as One Way Coupling Fluid-Structure Interaction consists of two steps. First, the influences of the fluid side were investigated, viz, the shape changes of the inflated rubber dam due to the fluid motions was captured when the height of the dam was 30cm with air pressure 0.01MPa, at which the pressure distributions over the surface of the dam were calculated. And next, the structural deformations were calculated using the pressure distributions. The initial inlet velocity for flow field was set to 0.1m/s. The structural deformation behaviors were investigated. The final research goal is to develop a Korean Inflatable Rubber Dam to be used for generating small hydropower.

  • The economical aspects should be evaluated to decide the LCC(Life Cycle Cost) of the long life facilities or equipments. Airplane operators evaluate the economical aspects to decide whether they maintain the existing airplane or substitute the new one. This paper presents economic life cycle and economic life cost for both Cessna 172R and Mooney 20J that are operated for flight training in 'H' University. The residual value that is used to calculate the capital recovery rate of the airplane is calculated based on the data from Blue Book published in USA. The annual equivalent on operation cost is calculated based on the 500 flight hours per year which is the annual flight hour for the airplane in 'H' university. This paper showed that economic life cycle of Cessna 172R is nine years since it was introduced in 2001, and Mooney 20J which was introduced in 1991 exceeds the economic life cycle in 2002.

  • In this paper, robust structural design of the PEMFC stack gasket is pursued with Taguchi method by considering the noise factor in stack assembly. The study of noise problem in stacking is required to secure the safety and performance improvement of PEMFC stack. The design parameters in the Taguchi method are selected so that the structural responses are insensitive to the noise factors. In the gasket analysis, a Mooney-Rivlin strain energy function is used to consider hyperelasticity between load and displacement. By uni-axial and equi-biaxial tension tests of the gasket, the material properties are determined for the use in robust design of PEMFC gasket. The robust design of the PEMFC stack may provide structural reliability.

  • In this paper, mechanical behavior of unidirectional composites with flexible matrix was predicted by geometrical non-linear finite element analysis. Two typical idealized unit cells of square and hexagonal fiber arrays were modeled and these were subjected to different loadings. The stress-strain behavior of composites was predicted from which the effective properties were calculated. The hyperelasticity of polyurethane matrix was considered using Mooney-Rivlin model. In result, the stress-strain behavior of flexible composites shows non-linearity, especially it is remarkable under transverse normal and shear loading conditions. In this cases, there are great difference between square and hexagonal fiber array models.

  • The effect of surface treatment of kaolinite with silane coupling agent on the reinforcement of SBR was investigated. The possibility of the practical use of kaolinite as an organic filler was also scrutinized and it was found that the reinforcement of SBR was improved by modifying surface of the cheap inactive inorganic filler with organic silane coupling agents. 3-Chloropropyltrimethoxysilane(C-series), 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane(M-series) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane(A-series) were used as coupling agents. To test the material properties of vulcanized and unvulcanized SBR, Mooney viscosity, modulus, elongation and fractured surface measurements by SEM were carried out by changing the amount of silane coupling agents. Torqe of the unvulcanized SBR following the measurement of the degree of vulcanization was to be increased as the amount of silane was increasing, and Mooney viscosity of M-series and A-series was also increased.

  • Various silanes, amino silane, vinyl silane, sulfur silane (TESPD), and ZS (TESPD/zinc soap complex), are added into chlorinated isobutylene-isoprene copolymer (CIIR)/soft clay/carbon black (CB) and CIIR/hard clay/CB compounds and they are investigated with respect to the vulcanization characteristics, the processability, and the mechanical properties. Comparing hard clay and soft clay filled compounds, hard clay (Suprex) filled system shows a higher die C tear than the soft clay (GK) filled one. The other properties (Mooney, extrusion torque/pressure, torque rise ($M_H-M_L$), modulus at 300%) are close to each other. Among various silanes, the ZS treated hard clay (Suprex) compound shows the highest mechanical property following hard clay(S)/vinyl silane(V) and soft clay(GK)/vinyl silane(V) compounds. The TESPD and the ZS effectively helps a formation of a strong 3-dimensional network structure between silica and CIIR via coupling reaction due to bifunctional nature of TESPD. In addition to that, the ZS added compounds show both a better processability and mechanical properties compared to the S2 ones at low concentration due to improved compatibility between zinc soap and CIIR matrix. Only the ZS added compound shows both improved processabilities (Mooney, Extrusion torque-& pressure) and improved mechanical properties (degree of crosslinking, elongation modulus, tear, and fatigue to failure counts) on both CIIR/hard clay/CB and CIIR/soft clay/CB compounds.
