  • The cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)-modified montmorillonite (MMT) was synthesized via a novel "dissolution and reassembly" method. To determine the optimal formula, the adsorption of C.I. Reactive Red 2 (X3B) with CTAB/MMT was investigated. The optimal CTAB/MMT nanocomposite was used to remove 2,6-dichlorophenol and p-nitrophenol from aqueous solutions. The adsorption results can be described by Langmuir isotherm, and the adsorption capacities were 200 mg/g and 125 mg/g for 2,6-dichlorophenol and p-nitrophenol, respectively. To realize the quick separation and recycle, the magnetic CTAB/MMT was further strategized and synthesized. The adsorption equilibrium time was 15 min for both contaminants; the ions' strength showed a little bit of influence on the adsorption performance. In addition, compared with acidic condition, neutral condition was more beneficial to the adsorption reaction. Due to the addition of $Fe_3O_4$, the adsorption capacities of this magnetic nanocomposite for 2,6-dichlorophenol and p-nitrophenol were a little bit decreased, which were 170 mg/g and 91 mg/g, respectively. However, the magnetic nanocomposite can be separated within 30 s under an external magnetic field, which would be useful in the practical application.

  • The adsorptions of gaseous $H_2O\;and\;D_2O\;on\;Na^+-,\;Ca^{2+}-,\;and\;Al^{3+}$ montmorillonites at various temperatures were undertaken. Break down of ir hydroxyl stretching bands into four Gaussian components was made by means of manual technique. Resonance theory of water to form silanol hydroxyl group was supported by $3625cm^{-1}$ band for OH and $2680cm^{-1}$ band for OD which depend on amounts of water adsorbed. The broad bands at about $3400 cm^{-1}\;and\;2475cm^{-1}$ were assigned to stretching band of silanol OH hydrogen bonded to adsorbed water. The prominent $3230 cm^{-1}$ band together with component around $2345 cm^{-1}$ were attributed to adsorbed $H_2O\;and\;D_2O$ respectively. The chemical nature of the hydrogen bonding between adsorbed water and neighboring surface OH was explained adequately in terms of electrostatic interaction.

  • Al-pillared montmorillonite was synthesized from Na-saturated montmorillonite which was prepared by ionic substitution from Ca-montmorillonite of the Jabut mine, Gyeongiu City d(001), surface areas, and dehydration and ionic substitution properties have been compared for both Ca-montmorillonite and Al-pillared montmorillonite. d(001) spacings of Ca-montmorillonite and Al-pillared montmorillonite were 15.1 $\AA$ and $18.3\AA$, respectively. Dehydration took place before $350 ^{\circ}C$ in Ca-montmorillonite, whereas linealy up to $550^{\circ}C$ in Al-pillared montmorillonite. BET surface areas are 5~6 times larger in Al-pillared montmorillonite ($192 \m^2$/g) than Camontmorillonite. Ca-montmorilonite shows high selectivity for $Na^{+}$ /, whereas Al-pillared montmorillonite for $Ca^{2+}$ . The former shows decreasing d(001) spacing with increasing substitution of $Na^{+}$ and irregular interstratified structure at high substitution of $Ca^{2+}$ /, whereas the latter shows linear decreasing pattern in d(001) spacing with increasing $Ca^{ 2+}$.

  • WHO reported that millions of people die every year because of diseases induced from environmental pollution. In 2012, approximately 7 million people were killed due to air pollution. Major cause of such pollution includes toxin, chemical waste, radiation and air pollution. Therefore, the significance and interest to indoor air quality has been continuously increased. Especially, the interest in radon, the ARC group 1 carcinogen, is rapidly increasing, and banning the use of construction materials that release radon, repairing aged buildings, and developing ventilators. To reduce the level of radon gas was inflowed to indoors and outdoors, this study is to research and develop a radon gas absorption board using absorbents. The absorbents utilized to absorb the radon gas were porous diatomite, natural zeolite, 4A zeolite and 13X zeolite and employed bentonite and illite, montmorillonites with the property of exchanging anions. As the main binder, magnesium oxide was used, with a content of 25% magnesium chloride.

  • The Sarisan clay deposits of hydrothermal origin are found in the intensely weathered wto-mica granite in Yeoju area. The major clay minerals of the Sarisan mine are illite and montmorillonite with minor disordered kaolinite, vermiculite, and some interstratified mineral. Clay minerals were studied using various methods including X-ray diffraction, infrared absorption spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and thermal and chemical analyses. Illites occur as discrete illite or highly illitic interstratified mineral. They are of 1M and $2M_1$ polytypes and characterized by a low lattice charge (1.768-0.926 per unit formula), low $K^+$ content (0.741-0.902 per unit formula), and high Si/Al ratio (1.154-1.293) as compared with muscovite. Montmorillonites are highly negative charged and occasionally random-interstratified as I/S with 80-98% smectite. Hydrothermal alteration is more important than later weathering alteration for the formation of illite and montmorillonite clay minerals. The hydrothermal alteration took place through two stages; the formation of illite in the early stage and the formation of montmorillonite in the late stage. Disordered kaolinite and vermiculite are the weathering products of plagioclase and biotite, respectively.

  • The supercritical fluids (SCFs) have been widely used for material synthesis and processing due to their remarkable properties including low viscosity, high diffusivity and low surface tension. Carbon dioxide is one of the suitable solvents in SCFs processes in terms of its advantages such as easy processibility (with low critical temperature and pressure), inexpensive, nonflammable, nontoxic, and readily available. However, it has generally low solubility for high molecular weight polymers with the exception of fluoropolymers and siloxane polymers. Therefore, hydrocarbon solvents and hydrochlorofluorocarbons have been used for various SCFs process by its high solubility for high molecular weight polymers. In this report, a PMMA/clay nanocomposites were fabricated by using supercritical fluid process. The $Na^+$-MMT(montmorillonites)was modified by a fluorinated surfactant which is able to enhance compatibility with the chlorodifluoromethane(HCFC-22) and thus, improve dispersability of the clay in the polymer matrix. The PMMA/fluorinated surfactant modified clay nanocomposite shows enhanced mechanical and thermal properties which characterized by X-raydiffraction(XRD), Thermo gravimetric analysis(TGA), Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

  • Zerovalent iron (ZVI) has been recently used for environmental remediation of soils and groundwaters contaminated by chlorinated organic compounds. As a new approach to improve its reductive activity and stability, zerovalent iron-montmorillonites (ZVI-Mt) complex are synthesized by simple process. Therefore, this study was carried out to elucidate the characteristics of ZVI-Mt complex and to investigate degradation effects of fungicide chlorothalonil. The XRD patterns of ZVI-Mt complex showed distinctive peaks of ZVI and montmorillonite. In ZVI-Mt complex, the oval particles of ZVI were partly surrounded by montmorillonite layers that could prevent ZVI surface oxidation by air. The degradation ratio of chlorothalonil after 60 min exhibited 71% by ZVI and 100% by ZVI-Mt complex. ZVI-Mt21 complex exhibited much higher and faster degradation ratio of chlorothalonil compare to that of ZVI or ZVI-Mt11 complex. Also, degradation rate of chlorothalonil was increased with increasing ZVI or ZVI-Mt complex content and with decreasing initial solution pH.

  • Bentonite layers are intercalated within the basal conglomerates in the Tertiary sedimentary basins of Kampo, Janggi and Pohang, southeastern Korea. Eighteen samples of the bentonites went through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, heavy mineral analyses, chemical analyses and oxygen, hydrogen stable isotope analyses to define the mineralogical characters of the bentonites. Heavy minerals such as zircons, apatites, amphiboles and biotites separated from bentonites show clean and euhedral surfaces, which are the characteristic features of volcanic origin. But biotites from the Chunbook Conglomerate are found as altered and heavily broken flakes which implies longer transportation of these bentonites. $TiO_{2}/Al_{2}O_{3} ratios of <2 $\mu$m particle fractions (the Chunbook Conglomerate 0.031; Janggi 0.029; Kampo 0.025) suggest that those are originated from volcanic tuffs. That is, the higher the value is, the more mafic in chemical compositions of the original tuffs. Authigenic montmorillonite and zeolite minerals were observed by SEM, which indicates diagenesis origin of bentonites. But the samples from the Chunbook Conglomerate showed only chaotically packed clay flakes in the matrix of sands or conglomerates, which implies detrital influence, not authigenic origin. The structural formulae of montmorillonite from these basins reflects their environment of formation. Fe (Ⅵ) can show the redox condition of its past environment and much lower $Fe^{2+}(Ⅵ)/Fe^{3+}(Ⅵ)$ ratios in montmorillonite of the Chunbook Conglomerate imply the greater oxidizing influence. Calculated burial depths from oxygen stable isotope data of the samples from the Chunbook Conglomerate generally fall to the range of 929~963 m whereas the real burial depth of this area is only 530~580 m. This could be explained as the bentonites of the Chunbook conglomerate had not been formed in situ. Discriminant analyses with the data from chemical analyses and structural formulae of montmorillonites show that bentonites from three different basins could definitely be distinguished with each other. This result arises from the different chemical compositions of original volcanic ashes and the difference of sedimentary environments.
