In the two-step analysis of Pebble-Bed type High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (PB-HTGR), the lattice physics calculation for the generation of homogenized cross-sections is based on the fuel pebble. However, the randomly-dispersed fuel particles in the fuel pebble introduce double heterogeneity and randomness. Compared to the deterministic method, the Monte Carlo method which is flexible in geometry modeling provides a high-fidelity treatment. Therefore, the Monte Carlo code NECP-MCX is extended in this study to perform the lattice physics calculation of the PB-HTGR. Firstly, the capability for the simulation of randomly-dispersed media, using the explicit modeling approach, is developed in NECP-MCX. Secondly, the capability for the generation of the homogenized cross-section is also developed in NECP-MCX. Finally, simplified PB-HTGR problems are calculated by a two-step neutronics analysis tool based on Monte Carlo homogenization. For the pebble beds mixed by fuel pebble and graphite pebble, the bias is less than 100 pcm when compared to the high-fidelity model, and the bias is increased to 269 pcm for pebble bed mixed by depleted fuel pebble. Numerical results show that the Monte Carlo lattice physics calculation for the two-step analysis of PB-HTGR is feasible.

This paper addresses Monte-Carlo simulation analyses for the stage separation of the general launch vehicle. The stage separation event of the launch vehicle occurs during a very short time and is related with many dynamic parameters. The stage separation is a critical event in that the launch fails if there is a collision during the stage separation. The stage separation analyses was conducted for the general launch vehicle to confirm the separation without collision within the designed clearance in case of the random input parameters. This paper presents the stochastic results of the stage separation of the launch vehicle using the Monte-Carlo simulation.

The neutron decay constant, ${\alpha}$, and effective delayed neutron fraction, ${\beta}_{eff}$, are important parameters for the control of the dynamic behavior of nuclear reactors. For the heavy water zero power reactor (HWZPR), this document describes the measurements of the neutron decay constant by noise analysis methods, including variance to mean (VTM) ratio and endogenous pulse source (EPS) methods. The measured ${\alpha}$ is successively used to determine the experimental value of the effective delayed neutron fraction as well. According to the experimental results, ${\beta}_{eff}$ of the HWZPR reactor under study is equal to 7.84e-3. This value is finally used to validate the calculation of the effective delayed neutron fraction by the Monte Carlo methods that are discussed in the document. Using the Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP)-4C code, a ${\beta}_{eff}$ value of 7.58e-3 was obtained for the reactor under study. Thus, the relative difference between the ${\beta}_{eff}$ values determined experimentally and by Monte Carlo methods was estimated to be < 4%.
The reliability model is developed for analyzing parameter uncertainty and estimating of flood inundation characteristics in a protected lowland. The approach is based on the concept of levee safety factor and the statistical analysis of model parameters affecting the variability of flood levels. Monte Carlo simulation is incorporated into the varied flow and unsteady flow analysis to quantify the impact of parameter uncertainty on the variability of flood levels. The model is applied to a main stem of the Nakdong River from Hyunpoong to Juckpogyo station. Simulation results show that the characteristics of channel overflow and return now are well simulated and the mass conservation was satisfied. The inundation depth and area are estimated by taking into consideration of the uncertainty of width and duration time of levee failure.

An accelerator-driven system consists of a subcritical reactor and a controllable external neutron source. The reactor in an accelerator-driven system can sustain fission reactions in a subcritical state using an external neutron source, which is an intrinsic safety feature of the system. The system can provide efficient transmutations of nuclear wastes such as minor actinides and long-lived fission products and generate electricity. Recently at Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute (KURRI; Kyoto, Japan), a series of reactor physics experiments was conducted with the Kyoto University Critical Assembly and a Cockcrofte-Walton type accelerator, which generates the external neutron source by deuteriu-metritium reactions. In this paper, neutronic analyses of a series of experiments have been re-estimated by using the latest Monte Carlo code and nuclear data libraries. This feasibility study is presented through the comparison of Monte Carlo simulation results with measurements.
The development of fast reactors with complex designs and operation status requires more accurate and effective simulation. The Monte-Carlo method can generate multi-group cross-sections in arbitrary geometry without approximation on resonances treatment and leads to good results in combination with diffusion codes. However, in previous studies, the coupling of Monte-Carlo generated multi-group cross-sections (MC-MGXS) and transport solvers has shown relatively large biases in fast reactor problems. In this paper, the main contribution to the biases is proved to be the neglect of the angle-dependence of the total cross-sections. The flux-moment homogenization technique (MHT) is proposed to take into account this dependence. In this method, the angular dependence is attributed to the transfer cross-sections, keeping an independent form for the total sections. For the MET-1000 benchmark, the multi-group transport simulation results with MC-MGXS generated with MHT are improved by 700 pcm and an additional 120 pcm with higher order scattering. The factors that cause the residual bias are discussed. The core power distribution bias is also significantly reduced when MHT is used. It proves that the MCMGXS with MHT can be applicable with transport solvers in fast reactor analysis.

Response surface method is applied to evaluate the reliability of laminated composite panels. Since the linear and nonlinear first-ply failure load are computed using deterministic finite element analysis, new probabilistic finite element analysis is not necessary. Tsai-Wu criterion is used to construct the limit state suface. Material properties, layer thickness and lamina strengths of laminated composite panel are treated as random design variables. feasibility and accuracy of current method is validated using Monte-Carlo method Which perform thousand times of finite element analysis directly.

In the low level radioactivity measurement, such as environmental radioactivity, there were used commonly cylindrical and Marinelli type beakers by means of measurement container. If there are differences in the matrix density or sample height between standard source and sample, it must be determined full energy peak efficiency considering self absorption effect. In this paper, we compared measured efficiency with calculated full energy peak efficiencies in the HPGe detector using the Monte Carlo method. For cylindrical container, we calculated the variation of the efficiency with sample height. Also, we calculated the variation of the detection efficiency with apparent density in the cylindrical and Marinelli container. It was seen that it need to be corrected for self absorption in the energy range of below 1000keV. Also, in order to verify the validity of calculation, we compared the calculated value with reference value using NIST SRM 4353 reference soil.
In this study, cross correlations among sample data at each site are calculated to obtain the asymptotic cross correlations among probability weighted moments at each site using Monte Carlo simulation. As a result, the relations between the asymptotic cross correlations among probability weighted moments and the inter-site dependence among sample data at each site are nearly a linear relation with slope 1. The smaller ratio of concurrent data size to entire sample size is, the weaker the relationship grows. Simple power function which the correction term in power function accounts for the differences of the sample size between two sites was fitted to each case to estimate the parameter. It is noted that this result can be used in the various researches which include the estimation of the variance of quantile considering cross correlations.
Purpose - The main purpose of this study is to develop the stress test model for Korean banks by exploring the optimal Monte Carlo simulation and BIS forecasting model. Design/methodology/approach - This study selects 15 Korean banks as sample financial firms and collects relevant 76 quarterly data for the period between year 2000 and 2018 from KRX(Korea Excange), Bank of Korea, and FnGuide. The Regression analysis, Unit-root test, and Monte Carlo simulation are hired to analyze the data. Findings - First, most of the sample banks failed to keep 8% BIS ratio for the adverse and severely Adverse Scenarios, implying that Korean banks must make every effort to realize better BIS ratios under adverse market conditions. Second, we suggest the better Monte Carlo simulation model for the Korean banks by finding that the more appropriate volatility should be different depending on variables rather than simple two-sigma which has been used in the previous studies. Third, we find that the stepwise regression model is better fitted than simple regression model in forecasting macro-economic variables for the BIS variables. Fourth, we find that, for the more robust and significant statistical results in designing stress tests, Korean banks are required to construct more valid time-series and cross-sectional data-base. Research implications or Originality - The above results all together show that the optimal volatility in designing optimal Monte Carlo simulation varies depending on the country, and many Korean banks fail to pass sress test under the adverse and severely adverse scenarios, implying that Korean banks need to make improvement in the BIS ratio.
