The spatial and temporal trends of water qualities in Lake Soyang was statistically analyzed in this study. The water qualities include nutrients, ionic contents and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) measured during 1993${\sim}$2000. The rainfall intensity and runoff from the catchment appeared to play an important role in water quality trends in the lake. According to seasonal Mann-Kendall test, conductivity, TP, and Ctl-a did not show any trends of increase or decrease over the 8 year period, while TN declined slightly. It was found that the variation of TP was a function of interannual inflow and rainfall. In the analyses of spatial trend, conductivity, based on the mean by site, showed a downlake decline over the eight year period. Minimum conductivity was found in the headwaters during summer monsoon of July to August and near the dam during October. This result indicates a time-lag phenomenon that the headwater is diluted by rainwater immediately after summer monsoon rain and then the lake water near the dam is completely diluted in October. During summer period, TP and TN had an inverse relation with conductivity values. Concentrations of TP peaked during July to September in the headwaters and during September in the downlake. Also, TN increase during the summer and was more than 1.5 mg/L regardless of season and location, indicating a consistent eutrophic state. Values of Chl-a varied depending on location and season, but peaked in the midlake rather than in the headwaters during the monsoon. Regression analyses of log-transformed seasonal Chl-a against TP showed that value of $R^2$ was below 0.003 in the premonsoon and monsoon seasons but was 0.82 during the postmonsoon, indicating a greater algal response to the phosphorus during the postmonsoon. In contrast, TN had no any relations with Chl-a during all seasons.
An important theme of this paper is to search for more genelalities of diversity and distribution pattern on the trampled plant communities in Daegu area. A total of 50 phytosociological releves were analyzed by the Zurich-Montpellier School's method and generalized habitat characteristics by using Euclidean coefficient and PCoA (Principal Coordinates Analysis). Five plant communities were classified and matched into largely two physiognomic types: grass-types such as Eragrostis ferruginea community, Eleusine indica community, Setaria viridis community, Digitaria ciliaris community, and forb-type of Plantage asiatica community only. These plant communities correspond to quite distinctive four habitat types, with both soil stability and moisture in microhabitat conditions: stable-moderate, unstable-moderate, stable-dry, and unstable-dry. Top-ten species showing the highest relative net contribution degree(r-NCD) were Digitaria ciliaris, Eleusine indica, Eragrostis ferruginea, Plantago asiatica, Echinochloa crus-galli, Trifolium repens, Polygonum aviculare, Setaria viridis, Setaria glauca and Artemisia princeps. The front three species showing more than 50% in percent r-NCD possess florescence after monsoon season. It is critically pointed out that the regional ecological differentiations i.e. the Daegu bioclimatic division, the $C_4$-plant dominant season(post-monsoon) of Korean peninsula, and species composition different from Japan's Plantaginetalia asiaticae, are the basis for deriving characteristics of the roadbed trampled plant communities of Daegu.
High salt concentration is one of the most important limit factor on plant growth at a disused saltpan for golf course construction site. The control of salt in soil is definitely required and the monitoring of salt concentration in soil and ground water also required to amend soil physiochemical properties. This research was carried out to monitor the pH and salt concentration changes by the height of ground water. By the physiochemical analysis test, the soil contains a high salt concentration and classified as a slight alkaline clay soil. The height of ground water table changed to 1.3m, 3.3m and 2.8m at dry season(mid-late June, 2005), monsoon season(early-mid July) and after monsoon(late July), respectively. Compare to the average ground level of 2.9m, the ground water was over flooded about OAm at monsoon season. The electrical conductivity(ECe) was measured above $4.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ over all areas and however, some areas showed over $20dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. During a monsoon season, ECe was lowered to $1.2{\sim}15.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, compared with those of the dry season. Therefore, the interception of the capillary connection between planting layer and ground water which contains high salt concentration should be adapted when golf courses are constructed on disused saltpan. The phytotoxicity caused by salt damage may be controled by the interception of capillary fringe of salt flow to the topsoil profile at the upper layer of the ground water table.
The East Asian monsoon is generally accompanied with the quasi-stationary front along the northern and northwestern periphery of the subtropical anticyclone in the boundary zone of the polar cold air mass and the tropical warm air mass. The rainy season in Korea has been called as Changma since the middle of 1500s. In meteorology, the rainy season with the quasi-stationary front, the Changma front, during the early summer has been defined as the Changma since 1905. The difference of meaning on Changma between meteorologists and the general public sometime does give a confusion. For example, the heavy rainfall event after the retreat of Changma is recognized as Changma by the general public, but not by most of meteorologists. The decision of the onset and retreat dates of Changma among the meteorologists is also ambiguous because of different viewpoints on the definition of Changma. In this study we survey the etymology and definition of Changma.

Drought is the recurrent natural disasters which harshly affect agricultural production and society in various parts in Bangladesh. Information on the spatiotemporal variability of drought events plays a vital role to take necessary action towards drought mitigation and sustainable development. This study aims to analyze the spatial and temporal variation of meteorological drought in Bangladesh during 1981-2015 using Effective Drought Index (EDI). Monthly precipitation data for 36 years (1980-2015) were obtained from 27 meteorological stations. Drought frequency (DF) and areal extent of drought were considered to investigate the spatiotemporal structure of drought. The DF analysis showed that the northern, southwestern and central regions of the country are comparatively vulnerable to meteorological drought. The frequency of drought in all categories has considerably increased during the recent five years from 2011 to 2015. Furthermore, the most significant increasing trend of the drought-affected area was found over the central region especially for pre-monsoon (March-May) season during this period while the decreasing trend of the affected area was found within the eastern region during the study period. To prevent and mitigate the damages of drought disasters in Bangladesh, agricultural and government managers should pay more attention to those regional drought events that occur in pre-monsoon season. The outcome of the present study can be used as explanatory data in building the strategies to drought monitoring and mitigation activities in Bangladesh.

This study investigates the change of flow characteristics over 10 Asian river basins in the past 30 years (1976-2005). The variation is estimated from The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model outputs based on reanalysis data which was bias-corrected for Asian monsoon reagion. The model was firstly calibrated and validated using observed data for daily streamflow. Four statistical criteria were applied to evaluate the model performance, including Coefficient of determination (R2), Nash - Sutcliffe model efficiency coeffi cient (NSE), Root mean square error-observations standard deviation ratio (RSR), and Percentage Bias (PBIAS). Then parameters of the model were applied for the historical period 1976-2005. The estimates show a temporal non-considerable increasing rate of daily streamflow in most of the basins over the past 30 years. The difference of monthly discharge becomes more significant during the months in the wet season (June to September) in all basins. The seasonal runoff shows significant difference in Summer and Autumn, when the rainfall intensity is higher. The line showing averaged runoff/rainfall ratio in all basins is sharp, presenting high variation of seasonal runoff/rainfall ratio from season to season.
The objectives of this study were to analyze reservoir trophic state, based on Trophic State Index (TSI), spatial variation patterns of three zones (riverine, transition, and lacustrine zone), and empirical models through 20-years long-term data analysis. Trophic variables of TP and CHL-a were highest during the summer monsoon, and decreased along the main axis from the riverine to lacustrine zone. In the mean time, TN did not show the trend. Ratios of N:P and Secchi disc transparency (SD) increased from the riverine to lacustrine zone. The analysis of trophic state index (TSI) showed that mean TSI (TP) and TSI (CHL-a) were 62 and 57, respectively, and these values were highest in the transition zone during the summer. This zone should be managed well due to highest lake water pollution. The analysis of Trophic State Index Deviation (TSID) showed that algal growth was primarily limited by light penetration, and this was most pronounced in the monsoon season. The analysis of empirical models showed that the value of $R^2$, based on CHL-SD model, was 0.30 (p < 0.0001) in the transition zone and the $R^2$, based on TP-SD model, was 0.41 (p < 0.0001) in the transition zone.
This study investigates the spatial structure of the total cloud liquid water content Q fields over the Northwest Pacific Ocean during winter monsoon. The distributions of Q have been estimated from the brightness temperatures of the ocean - atmosphere system $T_B(f)$, where f is frequency, measured by AQUA AMSR-E in January -March 2003. Marine strati (St) and stratocumuli (Sc) are typical for winter monsoon season. They were analysed using mainly high-frequency channel at f = 36.5 GHz, vertical polarisation. $T_B$ data were accompanied by the data on near surface wind speed, air temperature and humidity from the nearest meteorological stations. Tow one-dimensional spectra were computed for downwind and crosswind sections of Q fields. The AMSR-E antenna field of view (14-8 km) and the cloud field sizes (100-1000 km) restricted the spatial scales. The results of case study Jan 31 2003 are presented. Scale-invariant spectrum is typical. In the cases of extended St levels a spectral slope equals about -1.7, conforming to classical -5/3 of turbulence theory. For Sc cases the absolute magnitude of spectral slope is rather higher, as a rule. The value is about -2. In the case when cloud streets are presented, a strait line form of spectrum is less reliable with a slope being rather lower (about -1.4).
The objective of this study was to analyze long-term annual and seasonal trends of water chemistry on landuse patterns and seasonal precipitation using 72 sampling sites within Namhan River watershed during 2001-2010. Water quality, based on multi-parameters of water temperature(WT), dissolved oxygen(DO), biochemical oxygen demand(BOD), chemical oxygen demand(COD), suspended solids(SS), total nitrogen(TN), total phosphorus(TP), and electric conductivity(EC) varied largely depending on monsoon rain and landuse patterns such as forest, cropland, and residence. Concentrations of BOD and COD as an indicator for organic matter pollution, increased during summer monsoon season at the cropland and residential streams. Values of TN and TP were higher in residential streams than in the forest and cropland streams. In the meantime, DO values had weak relations to the landuse patterns of forest and cropland cover. Water quality was worst in cropland and residential streams, and also most degradated in 4th order streams. Overall, our results suggest that efficient water quality management is required in the cropland and residential landuse streams.

With an objective of evolving quantitatively and qualitatively superior bivolitine silkworm hybrid of Bombyxmori L. for tropics with shorter larval duration without compromising on productivity traits, a breeding programme was initiated at this institute during 1997 by utilizing breeding resource material from the institutes Germplasm collection. The breed SD7 is characterized with plain larvae spinning white oval cocoons and SD12 is characterized by sex-limited larval markings spinning white dumb-bell cocoons. After fixation, these breeds along with other newly evolved breeds were subjected for hybrid evaluation in the laboratory. Based on the hybrid studies, the hybrid SD7${\times}$SD12 was selected and evaluated for one year comprising three major sea- sons (6 trials) of tropics viz., Pre-monsoon (characterized by high temperature, low humidity and without any rain fall), Monsoon (characterized by moderate temperature, heavy rain fall with high humidity) and post-monsoon season (characterized by low temperature and low humidity with frequent rain fall) to know the fluctuations in the larval duration. The evaluation studies indicated that the hybrid is having shorter larval duration with productive merits. The hybrid SD7${\times}$SD12 recorded survival percent of 92.74, shell weight of 46.7 cg, shell ratio % of 24.0 and filament length of 1,200 meters with a shorter larval duration of 24 hrs; when compared to productive hybrid CSR2${\times}$CSR5(control). The breeding methodologies and hybrids usefulness for tropics were discussed.
