  • This article compares the concepts of divine incarnation as expounded in Daesoon Thought and in Christianity and questions the essence of the divinity in both traditions. In Daesoon Thought, The Supreme God, Sangje, saw major disorganization leading to extreme violence and doom and decided to incarnate on earth under the human form of Kang Jeungsan (1871-1909). Then the living God taught the solution to human suffering through the revelations he sent in 1917 to Jo Cheol-Je, or Jo Jeongsan (1895-1958) and the revelations were passed on to Dojeon Park Wudang who in 1969 founded Daesoon Thought. In Christianity, God incarnated in his son, Jesus Christ, who allowed for the radical transformation of the condition of man through his physical sacrifice. Daesoon differs in that Sangje did not offer himself as sacrifice when he came on earth but reorganized the world and taught how to apply benevolence to establish the Earthly Paradise. The affirmation that Daesoon Jinrihoe is both monotheistic and polytheistic is then analyzed. If the concept of monotheism seems to differ vastly between the two traditions, it appears that biblical monotheism is itself relatively young in the history of world religions so that Christianity has ancient roots germane to those of Daesoon Jinrihoe. The article concludes on the originality of this religion: though it is built on Daoism, Buddhism and Confucianism, it has transformed their vision of the deity and of its message in a most convincing manner.

  • Ideological characteristics and child rearing practices of North Korean society were studied with in-depth interviews of twelve adults who had escaped from North Korea since 1990 and with a questionnaire consisting of 17 items completed by 158 subjects who had also escaped from North Korea. There are 3 ideological characteristics of North Korea : Monotheism, collectivism, and patriarchalism. Collectivism resulted in collective behavior styles; monotheism made the hero worship of the Kim Il Sung lineage possible, and patriarchalism contributed to boy-preference and to differentiated sex-role expectations for their children. In practice, parents emphasize honesty and loyalty to the Communist Party, and they use praise as verbal reinforcement. Parents also emphasize obedience and control rather than democratic participation.

  • Caodaism is a new religion from Vietnam which began in late 1925 and spread rapidly across the French colony of Indochina. With a broad syncretic aim, the new faith sought to revivify Vietnamese religious traditions whilst also incorporating religious, literary, and spiritist influences from France. Like Catholicism, Caodaism kept a strong focus on its monotheistic nature and today Caodaists are eager to label their religion a monotheism. It will be argued here, however, that the syncretic nature of this new faith complicates this claim to a significant degree. To make this argument, we will consider here the nature of God in Caodaism through two central texts from two important stages in the life of the religion. The first is the canonized Compilation of Divine Messages which collects a range of spirit messages from God and some other divine voices. These were received in the early years of the faith. The second is a collection of sermons from 1948/9 that takes Caodaist believers on a tour of heaven, and which is entitled The Divine Path to Eternal Life. It will be shown that in the first text, God speaks in the mode of a fully omnipotent and omniscient supreme being. In the second text, however, we are given a view of paradise that is much more akin to the court of a Jade Emperor within an East Asian milieu. In these realms, the personalities of other beings and redemptive mechanisms claim much of our attention, and seem to be a competing center of power to that of God. Furthermore, God's consort, the Divine Mother, takes on a range of sacred creative prerogatives that do something similar. Additionally, cadres of celestial administrators; buddhas, immortals, and saints help with the operation of a cosmos which spins on with guidance from its own laws. These laws form sacred mechanisms, such as cycles of reincarnation and judgement. These operate not in the purview of God, but as part of the very nature of the cosmos itself. In this context, the dualistic, polytheistic, and even automatic nature of Caodaism's cosmos will be considered in terms of the way in which they complicate this religion's monotheistic claims. To conclude, this article seeks to demonstrate the precise relevance of the term 'monotheism' for this religion.

  • This paper examines the crisis of the protagonist's Jewish identity in Philip Roth's Portnoy's Complaint. Jewish values are centered on the philosophy of Judaism and Jewish history. Judaism is based on an ethical monotheism which is Bible-centered. It is characterized by its covenant with God, its humanism, and its emphasis on moral action. It provides essential reasons for man's existence and stresses human confidence and sufficiency. Jewish values can be found in words such as "good," "humanity," "dignity," "responsibility," and "sense of community." These positive Jewish values pervade Philip Roth's fiction paradoxically. Throughout especially Portnoy's Complaint, the protagonist fails to embrace Jewish values in contrast to Bellow or Malamud's heroes and repeat the same mistakes eliciting fits of laughter from readers. The protagonist suffers from his strongly-felt ethical and altruistic impulses perpetually warring with his extreme sexual longings against which he struggles. His desperation grows as he finds himself unable to channel his dissatisfaction and change his situations. His dominating mother and his confusion over Jewishness and Americanism are the main obstacles to his establishment of self-identity. He attempts to build up his gender identity and Jewish identity through his ego-centric sexual relationship with shikses(female gentiles). His inability to embody Jewish values leads to the failure to fulfill his identity. Roth paradoxically shows that the protagonist's realization of Jewishness is essential to the cure for his fragmented self.

  • The intention of this article is to check for the believers in Daesoonjinrihoe how to perceive the gods who they believe in. For that intention, I explained how the perception of gods in Daesoonjinrihoe is different from the perception of gods in other religions. To make a long story short, because of its polytheism the idea of god in Daesoonjinrihoe is different from monotheism such as Christianity, Islam. In addition, in spite of its polytheism it is different from other polytheism such as the religion in ancient India, especially rig-vedicreligion. In this article it is said that the believers in Daesoonjinrihoe have understood the distinction between Shin(神) and Shinmyung(神明). Nowadays Shin that has been used in Korea, China, Japan, is the word that was translated from English god. Therefore we need to reappraise the meaning of the word Shin. Anyway Shin that is being used in general means Shinmyung in Daesoonjinrihoe. Instead when they say the name of functional gods and the name to which the meaning of its origin affixed, the word Shin is used. Meanwhile, it has the advantage of classifying the ideas of god, but we can't explain all of them through the use of those classifications. I checked some classifications in this article and tried to apply the idea of gods in Daesoonjinrihoe. As a result, each classification has some critical points. There fore in this article I explained the distinguishing ideas of god in Daesoonjinrihoe from that in other religions, instead of the explaining fitted those classifications.

  • We live in two giant pendulum in called 'science' and 'religion'. But science and religion are contained in disparate information with each other, Those two is not easy to achieve convergence. But if you accept the ontological scheme of Great Chain of Being(存在의 大連鎖) in the Perennial philosophy(永遠의 哲學), Debate between religion and science is meaningless 'Great Nest of Being(存在의 대둥지, Great Chain of Being)' is similar to the multiple concentric circles, there are different dimension that the each top level to subsume surrounding the lower level. For example, upper zone 'Mysticism(神秘主義)' includes but transcends(or transcends but includes.) the sub-region theology, psychology, biology and physics. The Perennial philosophy is the great spiritual teachers of the world, philosophers and thinkers have adopted a common worldview, a religious views. Philosophers of the perennial philosophy seem to match the cross-cultural almost unanimous about the general level of the 'Great Nest of Being' for the past 3,000 years. The perennial philosophy made the conclusion that God exists in the world. Several types of view of God existing religions in the world have 'Monotheism(一神論)', 'Pantheism(汎神論)' and 'Panentheism (汎在神論)'. Although traditionally the God of the philosophers is the classical Theism, theological trends of today it is moving in the direction of Panentheism. Panentheism see that god is immanent and transcendent. also Daesoon Thoughts is the position of the Panentheism. so this paper points out the fact that the view of God of the perennial philosophy is precisely consistent with the view of God of Daesoon Thoughts. Wilber says 'envelopment [transcend and include]'. The word translates as 'powol(包越)' in Korean. 'Powol(包越)' means that all the developmental evolution is to surround the sub-region developed into the higher realms. View of the God in the perennial philosophy is 'powol theism(包越的 有神論)'. but 'powol immanent God(包越的 內在神論)' rather than building regulations as 'powol theism(包越的 有神論)'. It would have to be a more accurate representation of it. Because in the existing 'theism(有神論)' the god and humans are thought to exist apart. However, Daesoon Thoughts are deemed to also recognize another universal laws. also Sangje(上帝, the Supreme God) is recognized as a cosmic existence that transcends the laws. This point, as the characteristics of the Daesoon Thoughts, In other religions can not be found. Therefore, More specifically represent(More accurately represent), Sangje of the Daesoon Thoughts can be described as 'powol theism' or 'transcendental and included deism(包越的 理神論)'. Importantly, The idea of God can be captured directly by the discipline. In this sense, In terms of the other religions have no discipline law, the practice [discipline] of the Daesoon Thoughts required in the present age. It has the absoluteness.

  • The Old Testament cotains mention of the history of creation and clothing in ancient Hebrew. This study dealt with Hebrew dress customs especially aimed at the manners of their hair styles, headgears, footwear and personal ornaments. References are Korean Revised Version, English King James Version and Revised Standard Version. There is little mention of hair styles and headgears in the Old Testament. Some sort of turban was worn by priests, and soldiers protected themselves with helmets, but most Israelitish men went bareheaded except on special occasions and often wear simple headbands. It was more common for women to use headwear of some type-turbans, scarves, and veils concealing the face. The veil was the distinctive female wearing apparel. All females, with the exception of maidservants and women in a low condition of life, wore a veil. It was the custom for women to wear a veil entirely covering their head in the public. Through most of the Old Testament periods long and thick hair was admired on men and women alike. The Hebrews were proud to have thick and abundant long hair, and they gave much attention to the care of their hair. The caring of hair was deeply related to their rituals. Nazirites never took a razor to their hair during his vow-days, but instead let it grow long, as an offering to God. Men would not cut their beards, but allow them to grow long. The Israelites' standard footwear was a pair of simple leather sandals. This was one of the items of clothing not highly prized. In a colloquial saying of the time, a pair of shoes signified something of small value, and to be barefoot except in times of mourning or on holy place, was a sign either of extreme poverty or humiliation, as in the case of war prisoners. Because precious stones were not mined in the Palestine-Syria region, Hebrews imported them from foreign country. They were consumer-to a large degree limited by their very modest standard of living-but not producers. Hebrews liked the precious stones and were motivated to acquire and wear jewels. Besides their use for adornment and as gifts, the precious or semiprecious stones were regarded by Jews of property. The Hebrews were not innovators in the field of decorative arts. The prohibition of the Law against making any "graven image" precluded the development of painting, sculpture, and other forms of representational art. Jewish men did not indulge in extravagances of dress, and there was little ornamentation among them. Men wore a signet ring on their right hand or sometimes suspended by a cord or chain around the neck. The necklaces, when worn by a male, also bore any symbol of his authority. Bracelets were extremely popular with both men and women, men usually preferring to wear them on their upper arms. The girdle was a very useful part of a man's clothing. It was used as a waist belt, or used to fasten a man's sword to his body, or served as a pouch in which to keep money and other things. Men often carried a cane or staff, which would be ornamented at the top. Among the women there was more apt to be ornamentation than among the men. Hebrew women liked to deck themselves with jewels, and ornamentation of the bride were specially luxurious and numerous. They wore rings on their fingers or On toes, ankle rings, earrings, nosering, necklace, bracelets. Their shapes were of cresent, waterdrops, scarab, insect, animal or plant. Sometimes those were used as amulets. They were made of ceramics, gold, silver, bronze, iron, and various precious stones which were mostly imported from Egypt and Sinai peninsular. Hebrews were given many religious regulations by Moses Law on their hair, headgears, sandals and ornamentation. Their clothing were deeply related with their customs especially with their religions and rituals. Hebrew religion was of monotheism and of revealed religion. Their religious leaders, the prophets who was inspired by God might need such many religious regulations to lead the idol oriented people to God through them.
