Scanning probe microscopes (SPMs) such as the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and the atomic force microscope (AFM) were used for surface modification tools at the nanometer scale. Material surfaces, i. e., titanium, hydrogen-terminated silicon and trimethylsilyl organosilane monolayer on silicon, were locally oxidized with the best lateral spatial resolution of 20nm. The principle behind this proximal probe oxidation method is scanning probe anodization, that is, the SPM tip-sample junction connected through a water column acting as a minute electrochemical cell. An SPM-nanolithogrphy process was demonstrated using the organosilane monolayer as a resist. Area-selective chemical modifications, i. e., etching, electroless plating with gold, monolayer deposition and immobilization of latex nanoparticles; were achieved in nano-scale resolution. The area-selectivity was based on the differences in chemical properties between the SPM-modified and unmodified regions.

We investigated mechanochemical radical, which is concomitant with chemical lift-off lithography(CLL), on the self-assembled monolayer(SAM)/electrodes and a polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) using a colorimetric and a spectroscopic method. The 11-mercaptoundecanol(MUO)/Au or the 11-hydroxyundecylphosphonic acid (HUPA)/ITO were contacted with bare or activated PDMS. After contact, the each of SAM/substrates and the PDMS were immersed in a 2,2 Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical scavenger. The color of the DPPH exposed to the PDMS was changed from purple to yellow and the absorbance decreased definitely at 515 nm wavelength. The SAM/substrates, however, have caused small changes in spectroscopic property, indicating no existence of radical species. We concluded that mechanochemical radicals were formed by homolytic cleavage of PDMS molecules upon external force and hardly transferred on the SAM/substrates.
In this study, in order to investigate how consecutive treatments of glass surface with HF acid and water vapor/Ar plasma affect the quality of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane self-assembled monolayer (APS-SAM), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) thin films were vapor phase-polymerized immediately after spin coating of FeCl3 and poly-urethane diol-mixed oxidant solution on the monolayer surfaces prepared at various treatment conditions. For the film characterization, various poweful tools were used, e.g., FE-SEM, an optical microscope, four point probe, and a contact angle analyzer. The characterization revealed that HF treatment is not desirable for the synthesis of a high quality PEDOT thin film via vapor phase polymerization method. Rather, sole treatment with plasma noticeably improved the quality of APS-SAM on glass surface. As a result, a highly dense and smooth PEDOT thin film was grown on uniform oxidant film-coated APS monolayer surface.
Adopting an elaborately designed reflective objective consisting of four mirrors, we have developed a rotating-polarizer-type microspot spectroscopic ellipsometer (SE) with an ultra-small spot size. The diameter of the focused beam, whether evaluated using a direct-image method or a knife-edge method, is less than 8.4 ㎛. After proper correction for the polarizing effect of the mirrors in the reflective objective, we unambiguously determine the dispersion of the complex refractive index and the thickness of monolayer MoS2 using the measured microspot-spectroellipsometric data. The measured ellipsometric spectra are sensitive enough to identify small variations in thickness of MoS2 flakes, which ranged from 0.48 nm to 0.67 nm.
The antireflective (AR) coated poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) substrate was deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) to improve hydrophobicity and mechano-chemical properties of organic thin films. The water contact angles (WCA) were tested to characterize the surface wettability of SAM octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) films. Results showed that a contact angle of $105.9^{\circ}$ was obtained for the SAM films with an annealing process, and the highest WCA of $120^{\circ}$ was achieved for the films prepared by the SAM and ALD multi-process. The surface morphology of the SAM films with different assembly times and varying number of ALD cycles was obtained by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The maximum light transmittance for the SAM films on the PMMA substrate reached 99.9% at a wavelength of 450 nm. It was found that the SAM surfaces were not affected at all by the ALD process.
The properties of ultra-thin two-dimensional (2D) organic ferroelectric Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of the poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] were investigated to find possible applicability in flexible and wearable electronics applications. In the C-V characteristics of the MFM capacitor of 2-monolayer of 5 nm films, a butterfly hysteresis curve due to the ferroelectricity of P(VDF-TrFE) was confirmed. Typical residual polarization value was measured at 2μC/㎠. When the MFM capacitor with ultra-thin ferroelectric film was measured by applying a 10 Hz bipolar pulse, it was shown that 65% of the initial polarization value in 105 cycles deteriorated the polarization. The leakage current density of the 2-monolayer film was maintained at about 5 × 10-8 A/㎠ for the case at a 5MV/cm electric field. The resistivity of the 2-monolayer film in the case at an electric field at 5 MV/cm was more than 2.35 × 1013 Ω·cm.
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD), which is composed of a transition metal atom and chalcogen ion atoms, usually form vacancies based on the knock-on threshold of each atom. In particular, when electron beam is irradiated on a monolayer TMD such as MoS2 and WS2, S vacancies are formed preferentially, and they are aligned linearly to constitute line defects. And then, a hole is formed at the point where the successively formed line defects collide, and metal clusters are also formed at the edge of the hole. This study reports a process in which the line defects formed in a monolayer WS2 sheet expends into holes. Here, the process in which the W cluster, which always occurs at the edge of the formed hole, goes through a uniform intermediate phase is explained based on the line defects and the formation behavior of the hole. Further investigation confirms the atomic structure of the intermediate phase using annular dark field scanning transition electron microscopy (ADF-STEM) and image simulation.
Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been attracting attention since graphene monolayer was firstly separated. However, after an explosive boom, there is always quandary and stagnancy following and soon will come the refractory period of capital market. To avoid that undesired future, a paradigm of quasi 2D monolayer has been contemplated and devised in this article, with examples studied theoretically. The results show the general dynamic nonlinearity, and the expected tunability of bandgap without extra doping or substitution. These together suggest its intriguing both electronical and mechanical properties, which will enrich the arsenal of potential 2D materials.

Human colon cancer is the second most fatal disease among a variety of cancers to cause cancer death in U.S.A. and its incidence rate is currently increased in Korea. Recently, many studies have been being progressed on the efficacy of diverse combination treatments. But results of these studies in vitro were not similar those in vivo. This study compared the anticancer reactions between each use of arsenic trioxide and taxol against human colon cancer HT-29 cell line and combined use of two drugs. And these results compared with the results of HT-29 spheroid cells having similar characteristics to the solid tumor in vivo. The spheroid of HT-29 cells was formed by using a multicellular spheroid system and the result was observed through electron microscopy. In vitro cytotoxicity of each use of arsenic trioxide and taxol was evaluated in HT-29 monolayer cells. The $IC_{50}$ value for arsenic trioxide was to be $33{\mu}M$ and taxol was to be 18nM. The result treated with the combination of taxol and arsenic trioxide decreased the cytotoxicity on the HT-29 monolayer cells. The spheroid cells represented higher resistance against drugs than the monolayer cells. I demonstrated DNA fragmentation after incubation with concentrations more than $10{\mu}M$ arsenic trioxide and 100nM taxol for 48h, on the monolayer cells. But the results of HT-29 cell line treated with the combination of taxol and arsenic trioxide was the same as the outcome of control samples that were not treated with any drug. And I don't demonstrated DNA fragmentation on the spheroid cells. These results suggest that apoptosis was not induced in the use of the combination can be thought as that arsenic trioxide might work as an antagonist to inhibit a taxol mechanism to induce apoptosis. And the spheroid cells represented higher resistance against drugs than the monolayer cells.
Effects of sera from several fish species on monolayer formation, viability and functions of catfish hepatocytes were investigated to establish a primary hepatocyte culture system for screening endocrine disruptors. Hepatocytes of Korean catfish (Silurus asotus) were attached and formed monolayer using the media supplemented with their own serum or sera from eel and tilapia, but not with fetal bovine serum (FBS). The amount of fish sera (0.5~3%) for monolayer culture of the catfish hepatocytes was less than 1/10 of FBS (5~20%) that is commonly used for primary culture of hepatocytes of other species. The results indicate that FBS can be replaced with sera from some fish species and the fish sera are more effective than FBS in maintaining the shape and functions of the hepatocytes. The primary culture of catfish hepatocytes was maintained monolayer with fish sera for at least 10 days, which makes possible to be used for screening the activities of endocrine disruptors. In conclusion, the primary culture system of hepatocytes with fish sera in the present study could be a useful tool for screening and studying endocrine disruptors.
