The physical properties and sinterabilities of ZrO2-Y2O3-Bi2O3 ternary system powder prepared by coprecipitation were investigated. The crystallization temperatures of ternary system were increased and the specific surface areas were decreased with increasing Bi2O3 amount as sintering agents both PSZ and FSZ. Especially, the partially stabilized zirconia showed monoclinic phase. The sinterability was increased with the amount of Bi2O3 added which caused liquid phase sintering.
We report the results of the characterization of Cu oxide thin films deposited by radio frequency (r.f.) magnetron sputtering at different annealing temperatures. The deposited Cu oxide thin films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, Xray photoelectron spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements. The thickness of the films was about 180 nm and the monoclinic CuO phase was detected. The $CuO_2$ and $Cu(OH)_2$ phases were grown as amorphous phase and the ratio of the three phases were independent on the annealing temperature. The surface of Cu oxide films changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic as the annealing temperature increased. This phenomenon is due to the increase of the surface roughness. The direct optical band gap was also obtained and laid in the range between 2.36 and 3.06 eV.
Recently, due to increase in the usage of toxic gas and inflammability gas, the ability to monitor and precisely measurement of these gases is crucial in preventing the occurrence of various accidents. CuO doped and undoped $WO_3$ thick films gas sensors were prepared using screen-printing method on alumina substrates. A structural properties of $WO_3$:CuO thick films had monoclinic phase and triclinic phase of $WO_3$ together. Sensitivity of $WO_3$:CuO sensor at 2000 ppm of $CO_2$ gas and 50 ppm of $H_2S$ gas was investigated. 4 wt% Cu doped $WO_3$ thick films had the highest sensitivity of $CO_2$ gas and $H_2S$ gas.
ZrO2/Al2O3-Mullite composites were prepared by infiltration of the silica sol to the porous ZrO2/Al2O3 bodies. The porous ZrO2/Al2O3 bodies for infiltration were fabricated using ZrO2 (20wt%)/Al2O3 composite powders synthesized by the emulsion-hot kerosene drying method. The preparation of silica sols was conducted by the hydrolysis-peptization of an alcoholic TEOS solution. When ZrO2/Al2O3-Mullite and ZrO2/Al2O3 composites were sintered at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs, both of them showed an excellent sinterability. As the amount of mullite added in the composites increased, the ratio of the tetragonal phase of zirconia to the monoclinic phase at the room temperature became higher. It was known that values of the fracture toughness of the ZrO2/Al2O3-Mullite composites were about 5.48 MPa.m1/2 much larger than that of the ZrO2/Al2O3 system.
Ti-45.2at.%Ni-5at.%Cu and Ti-40.2at.%Ni-10atat.%Cu alloy powders were fabricated by gas atomization process. The microstructures, Shape, hardness and phase transformation behaviors of the powders were investigated by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, micro-hardness measurement, x-ray diffraction analyses and differential scanning calorimetry. The hardness of the Ti-Ni-XCu alloy powders decreased as Cu-content increased. The x-ray diffraction analyses were carried out for powders without heat treatment, and those that treated at 85$0^{\circ}C$ for an hour in a vaccum state($10^5$ torr) and then quenched into ice water. The intensity of B$19^t$ phase increased with heat treating. The monoclinic B$19^t$ martensite was formed in the Ti-Ni-XCu alloy powders during cooling.
In the severe accident case like LOCA, Zircaloy(Zry) claddings are oxidized not only in high temperature but also in high pressures. It is a concem whether the safety of high bum up fuels can be maintained during severe accident. The effects of steam pressure on Zry-4 oxidation, and the effect of prc-existing oxide layer on the cladding in the high temperature-high pressure oxidation of Ziy-4 were investigated. The experimental temperature range was $700-900^{\circ}C$, and the pressures were between 0.1 and l5.0MPa. Partial pressure of steam tumed out to be the important one rather than total gas pressure. The higher the steam pressure was applied, the thicker the oxide became. nle effect of st,earn pressure on the oxidation of claddings with preexisting oxide was about 40-60% less effective than that of pickled cladding. Aocelerated oxidation in highpressure slean1 seems to be originated from the formation of microcracks produced during the transformation of tetragonal zirconia to monoclinic phase. Steam pressure seems to affect the stability of tetragonal phase.
The sliding wear behavior of the plasma sprayed zirconia containing 8wt% yttria was investigated over a range of room temperature to 800℃. Both of the friction coefficient and the wear loss increased reaching its maximum at about to 499℃. and then decreased again with increasing temperature up to 800℃. The worn surface at elevated temperature were observed and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometer to study the mechanisms of high temperature wear behavior. Surface morphology of the worn samples changes with temperature. Monoclinic (m)/tetragonal (t) x-ray peak intensity ratio of wear debris and worn surface decreased with increasing temperature. Non-transformable tetragonal (t') to metastable tetragonal (t) phase transformation of worn surface increased with increasing temperature. The results indicate that dehumidification and above phase changes are contributing to the high temperature wear behavior of the plasma sprayed ZrO2-Y2O3 coatings.
The pure and 6mol% MgO-doped ZrO2 powders were prepared by hot petroleum drying method. The power characterization of homogeneous fine powder was indentified by the method of thermal analysis, BET and electron microscope. The transformation, content of t-ZrO2, crystallite size and apparent strain were measured by X-ray diffraction technique. The prepared powders were transformed in order of amorphouslongrightarrowmetastable cubic ZrO2longrightarrowmetastable tetragonal ZrO2longrightarrowstable monoclinic ZrO2 by a adequate heat treatment. The stabilization of metastable phase can be discussed in terms of energetial concept ; the difference of surface energy and internal strain in particle.
The Ce-doped YAG(Yttrium Aluminum Garnet, $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$) phosphor powders were synthesized by combustion method. The luminescence, formation process and structure of phosphor powders were investigated by means of XRD, SEM and PL. The XRD patterns show that YAG Phase can form through sintering at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. This temperature is much lower than that required to synthesize YAG phase via the conventional solid state reaction method. There were no intermediate Phases such as YAP(Yttrium Aluminum Perovskite, $YAlO_3$) and YAM(Yttrium Aluminum Monoclinic, $Y_4Al_2sO_9$) observed in the sintering process. The powders absorbed excitation energy in the range $410{\sim}510\;nm$. Also, the crystalline YAG:Ce showed broad emission peaks in the range $480{\sim}600\;nm$ and had maximum intensity at 528 nm.
Zirconia powders with nano size pores and high specific surface areas were synthesized via aqueous precipitation and hydrothermal synthetic method using $ZrOCl_28H_2O$ and $NH_4OH$ under pH=11 and ambient condition. By this reaction. zirconia hydrate $(ZrO_x(OH)_{4-2x})$ was primarily synthesized and the obtained zirconia hydrate was heat treated hydrothermally using an autoclave at various temperatures under pH=11. X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy, Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, FT-IR, Raman, Particle size analysis, DTA-TG, and BET techniques were used for the characterization of the powder. The synthesized zirconia showed an amorphous phase, however, the phase was transformed to the crystalline state during the hydrothermal process. The observed crystalline phase above $160^{\circ}C$ was a mixed phase of monoclinic and tetragonal zirconia. By the BET analysis, it was found that the specific surface area was ranged in $126{\sim}276m^2/g$ and the zirconia had the cylindrical shaped pores with average diameter of $2{\sim}7nm$.
