The effect of tetragonal $ZrO_2$ phase on the mechanical behavior in 7 mole% calcia partially stabilized zirconia has been studied. The $ZrO_2$ powder containg 7 mole% CaO prepared by Hot Petroleum Drying Method calcined at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour was nearly 100% tetragonal but as the calcining temperature increased certain amount of monoclinic phase appeared. The sintered specimen at 1$700^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours was aged at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 0, 24, 48, 72 hours. X-ray diffraction data showed that in the aged specimen monoclinic tetragonal and cubic phase coexisted. The Kc value of aged specimen for 48 hr was about 4.5MN/m3/2 much greater than unaged sample. But aged for 72 hr the KiC value was decreased. The increasing of toughness in PSZ is based on the Stress-Induced Phase Transformation that is metastable tetra-gonal $ZrO_2$ changes t stable monoclinic phase within the stress field of crack and the mechanical fracture energy absorption is occured But in this case due to certain amount of tetragonal phase transformed to monoclinic phase during cooling the microcrack effect by transformation also considered. Trerefore both Stress-Induced Phase Transformation and inclusion induced microcracking effect contrbute to the increase of fracture toughness of 7 mole% CaO-$ZrO_2$ containing monoclinic and tetragnola phase simulataneously.

The effects of the addition of either monoclinic $ZrO_2(ZrO_2(m))$ or tetragonal $ZrO_2(ZrO_2(t))$ containing 5.35[wt%] $Y_2O_3$ on the physical properties and electrical conductivity of $Al_2O_3$ were investigated. The addition of $ZrO_2$(m) and $ZrO_2$(t) increased sintered density of $Al_2O_3$. The Vickers hardness also increased as addition of $ZrO_2$(t) increased going through a maximum at 20[wt%] and the hardness of the specimens was found to be dependent on the sintered density. The addition of $ZrO_2$(t) improved the hardness of $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ systems and the $ZrO_2$(m) addition showed the better effect on the thermal shock property of $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ systems than that of the $ZrO_2$(t) addition. Above 15[wt%] addition of $ZrO_2$(t), the electrical conductivity is gradually increased with increasing applied voltage but not effects by addition of $ZrO_2$(m).
ZrO2/Al2O3-Mullite composites were prepared by infiltration of the silica sol to the porous ZrO2/Al2O3 bodies. The porous ZrO2/Al2O3 bodies for infiltration were fabricated using ZrO2 (20wt%)/Al2O3 composite powders synthesized by the emulsion-hot kerosene drying method. The preparation of silica sols was conducted by the hydrolysis-peptization of an alcoholic TEOS solution. When ZrO2/Al2O3-Mullite and ZrO2/Al2O3 composites were sintered at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs, both of them showed an excellent sinterability. As the amount of mullite added in the composites increased, the ratio of the tetragonal phase of zirconia to the monoclinic phase at the room temperature became higher. It was known that values of the fracture toughness of the ZrO2/Al2O3-Mullite composites were about 5.48 MPa.m1/2 much larger than that of the ZrO2/Al2O3 system.

The effects of the addition of either monoclinic $ZrO_2$($ZrO_2$(m)) or tetragonal $ZrO_2$($ZrO_2$(t)) containing 5.35wt% $Y_2O_3$ on the physical properties and electrical conductivity of TEX>$Al_2O_3$ were investigated. The addition of $ZrO_2$(m) and $ZrO_2$(t) increased sintered density of $Al_2O_3$. The Vickers hardness also increased as addition of >($ZrO_2$(t) increased going through a maximum at 20wt% and the hardness of the specimens was found to be dependent on the sintered density. The addition of $ZrO_2$(t) improved the hardness of $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$ systems and the $ZrO_2$(m) addition showed the better effect on the thermal shock property of $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$ systems than that of the $ZrO_2$(t) addition. Above 15wt% addition of $ZrO_2$(t), the electrical conductivity is gradually increased with increasing applied voltage but not effects by addition of $ZrO_2$(m).
The Yttria Partially Stabilized Zirconia powder was prepared by spontaneous precipitation method using $ZrOCl_2{\cdot}8H_O-YCl_33{\cdot}6H_2O$ solution as a starting materials. The optimal experimental conditions such as concentration and pH of starting solutions, the amounts of stabilizer $Y_2O_3$ used, and sintered temperature were carefully studied. The best condition for synthesizing $ZrO_2$ was experimentally selected and applied throughout this study for the preparation of the 3 mole% $Y_2O_3$ partially stabilized zirconia, 3YSZ. The physical properties of 3YSZ was examined by XRD, Raman, DT A, and SEM. The structural transition from pure monoclinic high temperature $ZrO_2$ to tetragonal room temperature 3YSZ was made possible by the added amount of $Y_2O_3$ in the $ZrO_2+Y_2O_3$ system. All Raman Spectrum band appeared in the lower wave numbers rather than in higher wave numbers as structure changes from monoclinic to tetragonal.
A batch mixture was prepared as 16mol% CaO-84mol% $ZrO_2$ of regeant-grade powder. The monoclinic Zirconia powder had an average particle size of $9.24 \mu\textrm{m}$ and calcium carbonate powder had a reported purity of 99.7 weight percent and mean particle size of TEX>$24, 37<\mu\textrm{m}$. The specimens were fired at 1400, 1500, 1650 and $1750^{\circ}C$ for 0. 3, 5 and 7 hours respectively. After fired the specimens were investigated using Scaning electron microscopy. Density Porosity Compressive strength Modulus of rupture and Thermal expansion were measured X-ray diffration analysis was also carried out. The results are as follows ; 1) As the firing temperature or soaking time was increased firing linear shrinkage apparent density compressive strength and modulus of rupture increased but apparent porosity decreased, 2) Cubic and monoclinic Zirconia was found at $1400^{\circ}C$ and cubic Ziconia found above $1500^{\circ}C$ 3) The specimens fired at 140$0^{\circ}C$ without soaking display thermal expansion curves by monoclinic〓tetragonal transformation and no tranformation was found at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs and above $1500^{\circ}C$. 4) The lattice parameter had constant value of 5.1345 $\AA$ through all the ranges of firing temperature 5) The higher the firing temperature was or the longer the soaking time was the larger the grain size was.
In the present study, the oxidation behavior of $Cu_{50}Zr_{50}$ and $Cu_{46}Zr_{46}Al_8$ metallic glasses has been investigated using transmission electron microscopy with a particular attention on the oxidation behavior in the supercooled liquid state. Identification of the oxidation product after continuous heating treatment shows that in $Cu_{50}Zr_{50}$ metallic glass, $ZrO_2$ with the monoclinic structure forms on the supercooled liquid as well as on the crystallized matrix. On the contrary, in $Cu_{46}Zr_{46}Al_8$ metallic glass, $ZrO_2$ with the tetragonal structure forms on the supercooled liquid, but that with the monoclinic structure forms on the crystallized matrix. The result indicates that the $Cu_{50}Zr_{50}$ metallic glass exhibits far better oxidation resistance in the supercooled liquid state than the $Cu_{46}Zr_{46}Al_8$ metallic glass.
The active metal brazing was applied to bond Alumina and Ni-Cr steel by Ag-Cu-Zr-Sn alloy and the interfacial microstructure and reaction mechanism were investigated. Polycrystalline monoclinic $ZrO_2$ with a very fine grain of 100-150 nm formed at the alumina grain boundary contacted with Zr segregation layer at the interface. The $ZrO_2$ layer containing the inclusions and cracks were developed at the boundary of inclusion/$ZrO_2$ due to the difference in specific volume. The development of $ZrO_2$ at the interface was successfully explained by the preferential penetration of $ZrO_2$ at the interface was successfully explained by the preferential penetration of Zr atoms a higher concentration of oxygen and a high diffusion rate of Al ions into molten brazing alloy.
The effects of the addition of either monoclinic $ZrO_2(pure)$ or tetragonal $ZrO_2$ containing 5.35wt% $Y_2O_3(Y-TZP)$ on the mechanical properties and thermal shock resistance of $Al_2O_3$ ceramics were investigated. The addition of $ZrO_2$(m) and Y-TZP increased sintered density of $Al_2O_3$. The Vickers hardness also increased as the volume fraction of Y-TZP increased going through a maximum at 20wt%. The hardness of the specimens was found to be dependent on the sintered density. The higher volume fraction of either $ZrO_2(m)$ or Y-TZP resulted in the higher fracture toughness of the composite was. This result may be taken as evidence that toughening of $Al_2O_3$ can be achieved by not only the transformation toughening but microcrack toughening of $ZrO_2$. The thermal shock property for $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ composites was improved by increasing the volume fraction of monoclinic $ZrO_2(pure)$. The grain size increased as the volume fraction of $ZrO_2$ did.
The effect of sintering atmosphere on the grain sizes and phase distributions in 3Y-ZrO2 and 8Y-ZrO2 was investigated O2 and N2 were used as sintering atmospheres. In the case of 3Y-ZrO2 the sintered density was higher in N2 than in O2 while in the case of 8Y-ZrO2 contrary results were obtained. The observation can be explained by the nitrogen solubility into the zirconia lattice. That is nitrogen gas can behave as a diffusive gas contrary to the behavior in other oxides depending on the amount of Y2O3. In 3Y-ZrO2 tetragonal phase was retained at room temperature irrespective of sintering atmospheres. Grain sizes of two specimens were below 2㎛ and larger in O2 thin in N2 Under a given stress the transformability of tetragonal phase into monoclinic phase was higher in O2 than N2. The results are discussed on the basis of an effect of the grain size and non-transformable ttragonal(t') phase.
