This experiment was conducted to identify the competitive ability of rice against Monochoria vaginalis Presl. and to determine effect of various herbicides on it. Photosynthetic efficiency of rice markedly increased as the density of M. vaginalis increased from 1 to 3 plants per hill. Competition index increased in propotional to an increase of M. vaginalis density while total dry matter of rice decreased in reverse. Significant yield reduction of rice, was observed at the density of M. vaginalis, 2 plants per hill and 37% at 3 plants per hill. Such a yield reduction can be mainly attributed to the decrease of panicle and spikelet number of rice which were greatly affected by competition with M. vaginalis. Regardless of herbicides tested, % inhibition increased remarkably as the concentration of herbicides increased from 1 to 20 ppm. No plant growth was observed in all the herbicides treated with 20 ppm except for butachlor, thiobencarb and bifenox, showing existence of the new promising herbicides to control M. vaginalis among the herbicides tested.
The study was conducted to identify growth habit of Monochoria vaginalis gathered from three different locations (Suweon, Jeonju and Milyang). The plant height, number of leaves and dry weight of M. vaginalis gathered from three different locations were greatly affected by the seeding dates. The earlier the seeds of M. varginalis sown, the greater M. vaginalis grew, In general, the earlier seeding dates produced significantly longer plant height, number of leaves and dry weight than those of later seeding dates, showing no difference in the collection of weed seeds in different locality. The earlier seeding dates resulted in the earlier flowering, but the interval between dates of seeding and flowering decreased progressively as the seeding times were delayed. Seed production was not significant among three locations and but seeding date on June 15 produced th highest seed production as compared with other seeding times. No. of flowers and capsule per pot among yield components were two major factors affecting seed production.
Seed occurrence patterns of Echinochloa crus-galli (L) P. Beauv. and Monochoria vaginalis (Burm. f.) Presl. were investigated in irrigated and rainfed rice cultures. There was not much difference in seed population of E. crus-galli between irrigated and rainfed fields, but M. vaginalis occurred in about 1.6-fold greater number in rainfed fields. In seed distribution patterns under the two conditions, about 50% and 30% of E. crus-galli and M. vaginalis, respectively, were found in the uppermost 5cm layer. Under both conditions M. vaginalis was distributed to a depth of 25cm, but distribution of E. crus-galli was only 15cm deep. Early rice transplanting brought about greater emergence of the two weeds than optimal or late transplanting. Emergence of the weeds was significantly greater in single cropping system of rice than in double cropping systems of rice followed by barley and/or strawberry.
New photodynamic herbicidal 2,3-dihydro-2,2,4,5,6-pentamethylbenzofuran-5-yl, (I) and 2,3-dihydro-2-ethyl-2,4,5,6-tetramethylbenzofuran-5-yl, (II) substituents in 6-benzofury-2-[1-( alkoxyimino )alkyl]-3 hydroxycyclohex-2-en-1-one derivatives were synthesized and their herbicidal activities against rice plant (Oryza sativa L.), barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) and pickerel weed (Monochoria vaginalis presl.) were measured under submerged pre and post-emergence conditions. Particularly, a series of (I) compounds showed good selective herbicidal activities between the 3 leaf stage of rice plant and barnyard grass at rates of $0.25{\sim}0.0007kg/ha$. The structure activity relationships (SAR) on the herbicidal activity with changing N-alkoxy groups were discussed quantitatively. According to the SAR results, it was expected that the selectivity factor between seed of rice plant and barnyard grass should be rely on the N-alkoxy groups with bigger dipole moment and bigger (or smaller) $B_3$ constant than optimal value $(B_3)_{opt.}=4.41{\AA}$. Compared with (I), the (II) substituents showed more superior herbicidal activities.
Post emergence herbicidal activities$(pI_{50})$ of X-substituted phenylvinylsulfone derivatives(S) in-vivo against rice(Oryza sativa L.), Barnyard grass(Echinochloa crus-galli) and Pickerelweed(Monochoria vaginalis Presl) were measured by the pot test under paddy conditions. The (S) showed herbicidal symptom rapidly with lower activity(average $pI_{50}=2.0$) as proherbicide, which was excellent tolerance to rice. The structure activity relationships(SAR) were analyzed using such a physicochemical parameters as hydrophobic$({\pi})$ and molecular orbital(MO) quantity by the multiple regression technique, and discussed with quantum pharmacology. The herbicidal activities were related to the hydrophobic$({\pi})$ effect of X-substituent and orbital(HOMO & LUMO) energy. In case of Pickerelweed, the effect was rationalized by parabolic function of ${\pi}$ constant, where the optimal value of ${\pi}$ was 1.10. An increase in hydrophobicity and negative orbital energy by the electron attracting X-substituent may contribute to the herbicidal activity. Based on results proposed from SAR analysis, the mode of herbicidal action could be assumed.
Novel series of 5-benzyloxymethyl-3-(thiophen-5-yl)-1,2-isoxazoline derivatives were designed and synthesized, and their herbicidal activities to diverse weeds were tested under flooded paddy conditions in a greenhouse. Among them, some compounds (3d-f) showed good activities to dominant weeds such as Echinocloa orizycola and Monochoria vaginalis presl. at a rate of 0.063 kg/ha without the serious injury toward rice.
The herbicide butachlor [N-(butoxymethyl)-2-chloro-N-(2,6-di-methylphenyl) acetamide] is widely used by farmers as a tool for weed management of transplanted rice(Oryza sativa L.) in Taiwan. The herbicide did not stop germination of rice and weed seeds, but strongly inhibited the subsequent growth of young shoots and roots. The inhibition was also strong on established seedlings. However, they could recover to normal growth after the herbicide effect disappeared. Butachlor greatly decreased the endogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) but increased the endogenous abscisic acid (ABA) contents of rice seedlings. Addition of lAA into growth medium (Hoagland's solution) partly relieved growth inhibition. Pretreatment of both gibberellic acid ($GA_3$) and IAA 24 hours before butachlor treatment almost completely alleviated the butachlor-interfere with GA and/or IAA metabolism or their action resulting in the growth inhibition of rice. Butachlor was readily absorbed by rice roots. During 24 hours of uptake experiment, 32% of the applied herbicide was absorbed. Pretreatment of the herbicide for 2 days did ncx affect the absorption. Of the absorbed herbicide, 80% remained in roots, only 20% transported into shoots, and more than 50% was metabolized to water soluble substances. Thin-layer chromatographic (TLC) analysis indicated that the Rf value of the most abundant metabolite was butachlor-glutathione conjugate. Rice, barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.), and monochoria (Monochoria vaginalis Presl) seedlings contained relatively high level of non-protein thiols, while the glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity was found highest in rice, barnyardgrass the next, monochoria the lowest. The difference in GST activity among these species might be related to their sensitivity to butachlor.
All types of weed community became dominant by Monochoria vaginalis (Burm.) Presl. as the nitrogen level increased. The importance value (IV.) of M vaginalis rapidly increased with increasing nitrogen level whereas the LV. of other weed species decreased. At the 10 $\times$ 10cm plant spacing, M. vaginalis was almost totally suppressed at all nitrogen levels. At the 20 $\times$ 20cm plant spacing, the degree of suppression declined with increasing nitrogen level. At the 30 $\times$ 30cm plant spacing, there was no suppression of M vaginalis at the highest nitrogen level. The yield obtained at the 10 $\times$ 10cm plant spacing when M. vaginalis was present was not significantly different from that obtained from the weed free plot for all rice cultivars while it was significantly reduced by M vaginalis competition at the 20 $\times$ 20cm and 30 $\times$ 30cm plant spacings. The difference in yield caused by M vaginalis competition was primarily due to a reduction in the number of panicles at all nitrogen levels. There was a high negative correlation between grain yield and weed weight at heading. The yield reduction due to weed competition varied depending upon the nitrogen level.
Growth, nutrient uptake and photosynthesis as affected by submersion of shoot in pickerel weed (Monochoria vaginalis Presl.) were determined. The shoots of pickerel weeds in hydroponic culture were subjected to the submerged or emerged condition at 3- or 5-leaf stage for 8 or 10 days. Under submerged condition, growth in plant height was enhanced, but leaf number, leaf area, fresh and dry weight were reduced compared to those under the emerged condition. Similar responses in growth to submergence were obtained with the pickerel weeds rooted in the soil. Under submergence, chlorophyll content increased during the first 2 days, but thereafter remarkably decreased at 3-leaf stage and after the first 4 days at 5-leaf stage. Compared to the emerged condition, uptakes of $NH_4\;^+$-N, $NO_3\;^-$-N, $P_2O_5$ and $K^+$ were reduced, but uptakes of $Ca^{++}$ and $Mg^{++}$ increased under the submerged condition. Photosynthetic rate of shoot under water, measured by $CO_2$electrode, showed the maximum by 210 ${\mu}$moles $HCO_3\;^-$/g F.W. at the 8th day after submergence(DAS) at 3-leaf stage and 320 ${\mu}$moles $HCO_3\;^-$/g F. W. at 6 DAS at 5-leaf stage. These results indicate that pickerel weeds grow much better when the shoot is air-exposed and are less tolerable to submergence at 3 leaf-stage than at 5-leaf stage.
A series of the herbicidal N-(4,6-disubstituted pyrimidin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl-2-(1,1-ethylenedioxy-2-fluoro)ethyIbenzenesulfonamides, 1 and N-(4,6-disubstituted triazin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl-2-(1,1-ethylenodioxy-2-flu ore)ethylbenzenosuIfonamides, 2 were synthesized and their herbicidal activities in-vivo against rice(Oryza sativa L.), barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli), bulrush(Scripus juncoides) and pickerel weed(Monochoria vaginalis presl.) were measured by the pot test under the paddy conditions. The structure activity relationships(SAR) between the herbicidal activity$(pI_{50})$ and a various physicochemical parameters of the hetero group and 4,6-disubstituents on the heterocyclic group were analyzed by the multiple regression technique. The SAR suggest that the 4,6-dimethoxypyrimidine substituent, 1a showed selective$({\Delta}obs.pI_{50}=1.12)$ and the most highest activity against barnyard grass, which depend on the hydrophobicity(log P<0) of heterocyclo group and molecular refractivity$((M_R)_{opt.}=14.58cm^3/mol)$ constant of 4,6-disubstituents on the heterocyclic group.
