In this paper, we propose a monitoring system that can monitor gas leakage concentrations in real time and forecast the amount of gas leaked after one minute. When gas leaks happen, they typically lead to accidents such as poisoning, explosion, and fire, so a monitoring system is needed to reduce such occurrences. Previous research has mainly been focused on analyzing explosion characteristics based on gas types, or on warning systems that sound an alarm when a gas leak occurs in industrial areas. However, there are no studies on creating systems that utilize specific gas explosion characteristic analysis or empirical urban gas data. This research establishes a deep learning model that predicts the gas explosion risk level over time, based on the gas data collected in real time. In order to determine the relative risk level of a gas leak, the gas risk level was divided into five levels based on the lower explosion limit. The monitoring platform displays the current risk level, the predicted risk level, and the amount of gas leaked. It is expected that the development of this system will become a starting point for a monitoring system that can be deployed in urban areas.
Principal Component Analysis (PCA) reduces the dimensionality of the process by creating a new set of variables, Principal components (PCs), which attempt to reflect the true underlying process dimension. However, for highly nonlinear processes, this form of monitoring may not be efficient since the process dimensionality can't be represented by a small number of PCs. Examples include the process of semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and chemicals. Nonlinear correlated process variables can be reduced to a set of nonlinear principal components, through the application of Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA). Support Vector Data Description (SVDD) which has roots in a supervised learning theory is a training algorithm based on structural risk minimization. Its control limit does not depend on the distribution, but adapts to the real data. So, in this paper proposes a non-linear process monitoring technique based on supervised learning methods and KPCA. Through simulated examples, it has been shown that the proposed monitoring chart is more effective than $T^2$ chart for nonlinear processes.

Vibration-based structural health monitoring (SHM) is crucial for the dynamic maintenance of civil building structures to protect property security and the lives of the public. Analyzing these vibrations with modern artificial intelligence and deep learning (DL) methods is a new trend. This paper proposed an unsupervised deep learning method based on a convolutional autoencoder (CAE), which can overcome the limitations of conventional supervised deep learning. With the convolutional core applied to the DL network, the method can extract features self-adaptively and efficiently. The effectiveness of the method in detecting damage is then tested using a benchmark model. Thereafter, this method is used to detect damage and instant disaster events in a rubber bearing-isolated gymnasium structure. The results indicate that the method enables the CAE network to learn the intact vibrations, so as to distinguish between different damage states of the benchmark model, and the outcome meets the high-dimensional data distribution characteristics visualized by the t-SNE method. Besides, the CAE-based network trained with daily vibrations of the isolating layer in the gymnasium can precisely recover newly collected vibration and detect the occurrence of the ground motion. The proposed method is effective at identifying nonlinear variations in the dynamic responses and has the potential to be used for structural condition assessment and safety warning.
Various monitoring systems have been implemented in civil infrastructure to ensure structural safety and integrity. In long-term monitoring, these systems generate a large amount of data, where anomalies are not unusual and can pose unique challenges for structural health monitoring applications, such as system identification and damage detection. Therefore, developing efficient techniques is quite essential to recognize the anomalies in monitoring data. In this study, several machine learning techniques are explored and implemented to detect and classify various types of data anomalies. A field dataset, which consists of one month long acceleration data obtained from a long-span cable-stayed bridge in China, is employed to examine the machine learning techniques for automated data anomaly detection. These techniques include the statistic-based pattern recognition network, spectrogram-based convolutional neural network, image-based time history convolutional neural network, image-based time-frequency hybrid convolution neural network (GoogLeNet), and proposed ensemble neural network model. The ensemble model deliberately combines different machine learning models to enhance anomaly classification performance. The results show that all these techniques can successfully detect and classify six types of data anomalies (i.e., missing, minor, outlier, square, trend, drift). Moreover, both image-based time history convolutional neural network and GoogLeNet are further investigated for the capability of autonomous online anomaly classification and found to effectively classify anomalies with decent performance. As seen in comparison with accuracy, the proposed ensemble neural network model outperforms the other three machine learning techniques. This study also evaluates the proposed ensemble neural network model to a blind test dataset. As found in the results, this ensemble model is effective for data anomaly detection and applicable for the signal characteristics changing over time.
Learning assistance system that continuously measures user's concentration will be helpful to grasp the concentration pattern and adjust the learning method accordingly to improve the learning efficiency. Although a lot of various learning aids have been proposed, there have been few studies on the concentration monitoring system in real time. Therefore, in this study, we developed an Android-based mobile application that can measure concentration during study by using functional near-infrared spectroscopy, which is used to measure brain activity. First, the task accuracy was predicted at a maximum level of 93.75% from the prefrontal oxygenation characteristics measured while performing the visual Q&A task on 11 college students, and a concentration calculation formula based on a linear regression model was derived. Then, a survey on the usability of the mobile application was conducted, overall high satisfaction and positive opinions were obtained. From these findings, this application can be used as a customized learning aid application for users, and further, it can help educators improve the quality of classes based on the level of concentration of learners.
Autonomous radiation source detection has long been studied for radiation emergencies. Compared to conventional data-driven or path planning methods, deep reinforcement learning shows a strong capacity in source detection while still lacking the generalized ability to the geometry in unknown environments. In this work, the detection task is decomposed into two subtasks: exploration and localization. A hierarchical control policy (HC) is proposed to perform the subtasks at different stages. The low-level controller learns how to execute the individual subtasks by deep reinforcement learning, and the high-level controller determines which subtasks should be executed at the current stage. In experimental tests under different geometrical conditions, HC achieves the best performance among the autonomous decision policies. The robustness and generalized ability of the hierarchy have been demonstrated.

This study proposes a method for forest vegetation monitoring using high-resolution aerial imagery captured by unmanned aerial vehicles(UAV) and deep learning technology. The research site was selected in the forested area of Mountain Dogo, Asan City, Chungcheongnam-do, and the target species for monitoring included Pinus densiflora, Quercus mongolica, and Quercus acutissima. To classify vegetation species at the pixel level in UAV imagery based on characteristics such as leaf shape, size, and color, the study employed the semantic segmentation method using the prominent U-net deep learning model. The research results indicated that it was possible to visually distinguish Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucc, Quercus mongolica Fisch. ex Ledeb, and Quercus acutissima Carruth in 135 aerial images captured by UAV. Out of these, 104 images were used as training data for the deep learning model, while 31 images were used for inference. The optimization of the deep learning model resulted in an overall average pixel accuracy of 92.60, with mIoU at 0.80 and FIoU at 0.82, demonstrating the successful construction of a reliable deep learning model. This study is significant as a pilot case for the application of UAV and deep learning to monitor and manage representative species among climate-vulnerable vegetation, including Pinus densiflora, Quercus mongolica, and Quercus acutissima. It is expected that in the future, UAV and deep learning models can be applied to a variety of vegetation species to better address forest management.

In this research a monitoring system for turning using NC information and the current of feed motor as a monitoring signal was developed. The overall system consists of modules such as learning process, NC data transmission, generation of forecast information, signal acquisition, monitoring and post process. In the learning process, the reference data and the cutting force equation necessary for monitoring are obtained from the accumulated monitoring results. In the generation of forecast information, the information of forecasted cutting forces is acquired from the cutting force equation and NC program and appended to each NC block as a monitor code. Reliability of monitoring is improved by using the monitor code in the real-time monitoring. Monitoring module is divided into two parts : the off-line monitoring where errors of NC program are checked and the on-line monitoring where the level of motor current is monitored during cutting operations. If the actual current level exceeds the limit value provided by the monitor code in the level monitoring, it is recognized as abnormal. In the event of abnormal status, the post processor sends the emergency stop signal to NC controller to stop the operation. Actual experiments have shown that the developed monitoring system works well.
Inevitable response loss under complex operational conditions significantly affects the integrity and quality of measured data, leading the structural health monitoring (SHM) ineffective. To remedy the impact of data loss, a common way is to transfer the recorded response of available measure point to where the data loss occurred by establishing the response mapping from measured data. However, the current research has yet addressed the structural condition changes afterward and response mapping learning from a small sample. So, this paper proposes a novel data driven structural response reconstruction method based on a sophisticated designed generating adversarial network (UAGAN). Advanced deep learning techniques including U-shaped dense blocks, self-attention and a customized loss function are specialized and embedded in UAGAN to improve the universal and representative features extraction and generalized responses mapping establishment. In numerical validation, UAGAN efficiently and accurately captures the distinguished features of structural response from only 40 training samples of the intact structure. Besides, the established response mapping is universal, which effectively reconstructs responses of the structure suffered up to 10% random stiffness reduction or structural damage. In the experimental validation, UAGAN is trained with ambient response and applied to reconstruct response measured under earthquake. The reconstruction losses of response in the time and frequency domains reached 16% and 17%, that is better than the previous research, demonstrating the leading performance of the sophisticated designed network. In addition, the identified modal parameters from reconstructed and the corresponding true responses are highly consistent indicates that the proposed UAGAN is very potential to be applied to practical civil engineering.
Comprehensive condition monitoring of large industry systems such as nuclear power plants (NPPs) is essential for safety and maintenance. In this study, we developed novel system-scale diagnostic technology based on deep-learning and IR thermography that can efficiently and cost-effectively classify system conditions using compact Raspberry Pi and IR sensors. This diagnostic technology can identify the presence of an abnormality or accident in whole system, and when an accident occurs, the type of accident and the location of the abnormality can be identified in real-time. For technology development, the experiment for the thermal image measurement and performance validation of major components at each accident condition of NPPs was conducted using a thermal-hydraulic integral effect test facility with compact infrared sensor modules. These thermal images were used for training of deep-learning model, convolutional neural networks (CNN), which is effective for image processing. As a result, a proposed novel diagnostic was developed that can perform diagnosis of components, whole system and accident classification using thermal images. The optimal model was derived based on the modern CNN model and performed prompt and accurate condition monitoring of component and whole system diagnosis, and accident classification. This diagnostic technology is expected to be applied to comprehensive condition monitoring of nuclear power plants for safety.
